Just what is Sony doing with Vita? If they've given-up, they should just kill it.

Honestly I think it might've helped if they'd spread out some of the launch titles a bit. I bought too much crap at launch and got totally overwhelmed with it all. A few months later I bought Gravity Rush. Now in the span of a month I'm getting Technika Tune, Ragnarok Odyssey, Persona 4 Golden, and Virtue's Last Reward. Oh and I might pick up NFS Most Wanted.

It might help if there was a constant stream of titles coming out rather than the feast or famine release schedule.

Better software line up this holiday than consoles(in the west). Bye

Oh and buy one if you love it so much

It's basically going exactly as I imagined in terms of support, Sony still has some exciting stuff coming, Tearaway for example. It's never, and was never going to be huge, but as long as Sony occasionally make something cool for it, I'm fine with that.

bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch. I love my Vita, it's exactly what i was expecting. Resistance Burning Skies, is still the best portable FPS (controls wise), NFS: MW is apparently not as good as the console version, NO SHIT, Asscreed Lib isn't as good as 3, NO SHIT. But for games i'm holding in my hands anytime i want, these are all really great. People who don't own one should stop complaining about how shitty it is.

It's such an awesome little system, but if Sony doesn't drop the price and get some third parties to really support it.......

I find it funny that people say the Vita needs a killer app but then also claim they bought a 3DS for Mario Land, Kid Icarus or OoT... seriously? My 3DS killer apps are Ace Attorney, PLvsAA and Paper Mario since those won't be appearing anywhere else and are actually unique games.

i'm interested in buying one. havent had a mobile device since gba. just waiting on the revision and bigger catalog. if that doesnt happen and it dies i'll bite on a cheaper price.

but it hasnt had a christmas yet which should move some units.

honestly im not expecting it to be a blow out system or even sell comparable to psp, but that doesnt mean it wont make money for sony in the long run.

Isn't 3DS doing GBA-ish globally? There's still room for handhelds, I think. I just don't know what it'd take for Vita to make a comeback. I'm buying a glorious looking blue one early next year because I love handhelds, but I have to admit I'm struggling to find "system sellers" for me.

There appear to be two arguments here.

One is "The Vita isn't dying because I play mine a lot, so you're wrong."

The other is "The Vita has unprecedentedly low sales for a major handheld and this does not appear like it will change in the future, which doesn't inspire faith in a healthy ecosystem."

The problem is anyone who insists on arguing the former will not agree to discuss the latter, so everything's going to go in circles.

yeah people should just buy every piece of hardware that comes out even if there isnt any compelling software for it. talk about fair weather gamers! psh!

Then again, people get the latest Apple upgrade even when their 1 year old device could run the software just fine.

I don't understand what's happening with this handheld. I haven't bought one yet, but I love the hardware and absolutely want it to succeed. Like many others though, I figured I'd wait till the library gets beefed-up. With the holidays right around the corner, I thought by now we'd have new colors, maybe a small price-cut/new bundle, along with some sweet new titles. None of that has happened, and it's almost as if as far as Sony's concerned, it just doesn't exist anymore. I don't recall anything worthwhile being shown for it at E3 or TGS. Just what's going on here?

Also, this might not be the time to pick and choose, but here it goes: I was hoping not just for more games, but games that feel specifically unique to the handheld. I get that it's a powerful handheld, but I hate it when developers try to recreate the same home-console experience for it. I can already play that at home with a nicer set-up, give me Vita games that are distinctly Vita games as opposed to a me-too-PS3 clones.
The new North American ad with "Playstation Vita, console gaming on the go" doesn't help with that. Most handheld gamers don't want a handheld PS3, they want portable games that can be played in small increments or are unique to the hardware. The 3DS has done this well with games like super Mario 3D land having shorter levels. It's hard to play a narrative heavy game like uncharted on the subway or on a bus with so many people around, it's hard to get immersed, even with headphones.

Also, Sony needs to stop releasing games for both PS3 and vita, since most people who already own a ps3 will choose to play it on the ps3 (games like PSBR, FFX HD, etc come to mind).

OP, while the Vita is undoubtedly in trouble, what are you talking about? There are new bundles out there (AC Liberation and CoD Blops coming) and there are games (LBP, Gravity Rush, AC Liberation, just to name the recent "big" ones).

Moreover, Sony seems to be pushing the Cross-Buy option pretty hard, and while I don't think it's a great strategy to move Vita hardware, it is a damn friendly consumer option. That is where their head is.

Why invest in Vita long-term if you're not planning on holding on to the Playstation brand? To put it another way, since about two months ago rumours have had Sony looking to sell their Playstation operation lock, stock and barrel on to another Asian concern. Having Vita and a working Playstation 4 prototype on their books will do wonders for the asking price.

What rumours ? ^

Not sure I'd agree with that. Maybe most previous handheld gamers (since it couldn't really be done before). A lot of people play their vita at home on the couch, in their bed etc and it's pretty easy to pause.

There are alot of games for the vita. If you don't know about them , you haven't been paying attention. Unless you live in Japan. There it is a problem at the moment at least.

Paying something around 200 bucks for access to roundabout 70 games and not much more isn´t such a sweet deal for many people.

Sony admitting they screwed up with a device and failed to support it with the proper software, marketing and attention it needed to succeed? and actually killing it altogether?

Sony admitting they did something wrong?

lol

lol?

No it isn't.

Stop dragging the 3DS down with Vita. The 3DS isn't doing as hot as its predecessor. The Vita is DOA.

The STRUGGLES it's enduring in the west is telling.

Other than Mario games and Pokemon( a DS game) nothing else is selling well in the west really. Has a weak line up too

Is it so frustrating to people that Sony won't make some dramatic market-withdrawal gesture?

Sony will sit where they are with it until they've got more cards to play. They won't run losses to jump-start it before then, though. So you'll just have to live with it as it is.

I knew there was something missing on NeoGAF these past days: a new Vita is doomed thread. Thank you OP for filling the void.

I have a weird love-hate situation with the Vita, not sure if it's with the machine itself or how Sony handles it.

When people know how to program games for it that look good and run fine, I love it (Uncharted, SFxTekken, Gravity Rush, etc...)

When people manages to make PS2-era games that look good, run fine and being fun, I love it even more (MGS Collection HD, NG Sigma Plus) and I wish I could play some more (FFX and FFXII HD please?)

When I see mobile phones having lots of games that could easily be ported to Vita, I get mad. Come on, GTA3 and Max Payne on iOS could easily be doable on this thing.

And finally, when I see games that tries too much and end up being shit (Looking at you Resistance), I look at my 3DS XL to see if I can be satisfied.

It seems to me that they wanted to grab western market which is never a market for a handheld without Mario on it. It makes sense that they allocated more resource to investing into western centered IPs (COD, Uncharted, Resistance, LBP, etc) for that goal. Unfortunately most consumers and developers (this is critical, just look at the crappy COD and FIFA13 on the Vita) don't care the handheld entries of those IPs. Also their strategy naturally resulted in less resource for the Japanese market where handheld consoles matter. They probably thought in Japan the PSP to Vita transition would happen automatically without a problem, until Nintendo aggressively took Monster Hunter.

And the reason for western gamers to like the PSP is the Japanese game library in the first place. Now, SCE lost Japanese market and probably won't have a chance to get any attention from the western market. So, yeah, they are screwed.

What rumours ? ^

I'm not an insider or anything like that. It's just stuff I've picked up here and there. It could all be nonsense, for all I care. Next gen for me will consist of PC, Nintendo and OUYA. I honestly don't care too much about what Sony are doing, aside from the ramifications for the industry as a whole if they were to sell PS.

Gonna have to back that up Homie.

I wonder why they keep it alive. It can't be contractual obligation. Perhaps out of pride they must have this holiday season?

Anyway, they need to spend every penny on the Xperia line of phones above all else.

Struggling /= dead.

The same could be said about vita though its of course not selling as well obviously.

Vita isn't dead till Sony says so not because some randoms on a forum says so. We've seen this with the PS3. They will deliver if how they treated the PS3 line up is anything to go by and how they turned it around.

I feel like it's in a coma, rather than dead. Maybe in two years when its price has dropped significantly and it's still a great piece of tech, it will "wake up" and go on to have a nice life.

No?

man the bitching is strong on this subject isn't it....

you know what my issue with vita is? Not enough money/time to buy all the games I want

We are still in its first year and the software line up has been fantastic.
