Halo 4 Story Spoilers and Speculations

So does anyone else feel that the beginning of Primordium, with ONI questioning Chakas Monitor about the Didact and Ancient Humanity takes place after Halo 4? I've felt that this is true for a while now. At the end of Primordium, we hear Chakas Monitor stating that he now knows where to find the Librarian. How this plays into future Halo games, I am unsure.

That would be interesting, seeing's how the last known location of The Librarian was Earth. Fits well with H4 ending on Earth.

Isn't she dead though? I remember in mission six the didact saying something about her being dead (I think).

She was on Earth when the Halo array fired, so it's pretty heavily implied that she's dead.

So what is the point of creating these plot strings in the books if they mean nothing? Halo Annivsary terminal, GS quote, "what I would give to have a single company of Prometheans here right now. Oh they would most certainly restore order with their trademark lethality. But, that would mean HE (Didact) would have to be here to. And without the librarian to temper his rage, well these reclaimers... might almost prefer the Flood." Look how this came to fruition in the games. 343 isn't creating plot strings for no intended reason.

I'm not arguing whether she's dead or not, just what her last known whereabouts were. Though the Didact also claims that she's dead in one of the cutscenes. Guess we'll find out exactly what happened when Silencium comes out next year.

Well shit.

I don't really want to have a narrative Chief story without Cortana. She's the most likable character.

That's the thing. The way she went out was a bit laughable and confusing. The many copies of her holding down the Didact was a bit silly, not the concept but the execution.

Also, how could she generate a force field to save Chief? AI's can suddenly do that now?

I guess we'll see in the long run if 343 blew their load to early with the death of her.

well,. they could be flexible with what she could do since she was using Forerunner tech and the Librarian AI also met her.

Who is it who's questioning Halsey in the intro?

c'mon Ellis, come in here and answer this.

For anyone with knowledge of the military, is Master Chief a rank in some division? If not, why's he called that? Is it a high ranked position? It seems like every person MC meets is a superior officer since he addresses them as sir or ma'am. This guy has saved the human race 4 times now and can't get a promotion? He seems to have no more pull than a private.

master chief petty officer is the highest enlisted rank in the Navy, if they're following US navy rankings that is.

people with that rank are a big deal even though they aren't officers.

Yeah, I thought of that but it still feels a bit lazy. I would have bought it more if Chief didn't look like he was doing the stomach flop on the nuke and had thrown it away or something.

If that's the case it would make sense. No point promoting your 7 foot super-human soldier past that to an officer. I guess I just got the impression that he was a low rank since he rarely commands other soldiers. Usually he just announces he's going to do something and everyone says sure go on. "I can see the targeting laser I'm going to get it" etc.

Or they're scared shitless of that 7 foot tank and say yes to whatever he decides. ;)

Plus from the characters personality, i don't think hed even want a rank where he isn't in the middle of the action at all times.

The Spartan IIs were just supposed to be super soldiers, so they were enlisted. S117 holds the highest possible enlisted rank.

Future groups were officers. If he opted into the Spartan IV program, he'd probably get shot up the officer ranking system pretty quickly, given his Chiefitude/former experience commanding the Spartan IIs.

I'm sorry but that's crazy talk.

"Do you believe the Master Chief succeeded because he was, at his core, broken?" "What does John have to do with this?"

That line makes 0 sense if she's talking to Chief.
On the subject of Cortana being gone, we shouldn't leave out the many foreshadows of her possible return. She herself mentioned another Cortana being made but without her original memories and personalities. Also, her clone at the end scene said whatever was left of her was in the ships debri "the rest of me is down there". And the Prologue showing Dr. Halsey holding out Cortana to Chief on Earth? There's a lot to look forward knowkng all this and more to come.

Wait, this happens when?

I think Cortana actually is going to be back in subsequent games.

It would be really interesting for there to be a copy of Cortana assigned to Chief, but Chief knows it's not really her and has trouble connecting with her in the same way he did OG Cortana.

Also clone Cortana would have to come to terms with the fact that not only is she a computer, not a person, but the memories and feelings she does have aren't even hers. Cortana alludes to this in Halo 4's story.

This could lead to early rampancy for her and we could have a fully psychotic Cortana on our hands, maybe even working with the Didact. I see lots of possibilities for bringing back her character.

Cortana gone... 343 GS floating around the systems of an ONI ship without his actual "body" ... if the dates match then perhaps 343 GS to replace Cortana in Chiefs suite (if she doesnt come back), 343 GS knows the Didact from when he was Chakas...

Probably not, but fun to speculate :)

If they do this I'll play the next game on mute. When GS speaks it's like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Wait, this happens when?

When they were talking about the psychological issues Spartan 11's exhibited.

This is what I am thinking will happen as well.

You know what sucks, right when the cutscene started where the Forerunner lady (name escapes me ATM) begins explaining the crux of the rest of the game, my brother started vacuuming outside of my room and I missed a lot of it. Now I have a broken idea of everything that went on. :(

Is that cutscene available on YouTube anywhere?

I wonder if we'll ever find out more about this thing. I just came across it today, saw the picture and thought it was a Reaper from Mass Effect until I noticed the things that looked like tentacles were the back of the ship.

I mean, we do keep hearing about other species in the galaxy but have never seen them beyond the Forerunners or Covenant.

Video Contains all the cutscenes from Mission 5, if you haven't beaten it, stop after the Librarian part

Loved this game's campaign. Super easy on legendary, but the story was great for me. Beat it in about 7 hours solo legendary without skipping a thing or rushing. Found all but 1 terminal on my own too.

Favorite level: Flying the pelican/airship at the end like it was the Death Star scene from Star Wars. So much fun! :D

Favorite moment: Cortana telling Chief to not make a girl a promise he can't keep. #2 being her line about him or her being human and machine.

Least favorite level: Mammoth towards the end. Fucking so many ghosts and wraits maaaan.

Least favorite moment: Lasky not looking at all like he does at the end of Forward Unto Dawn.

Something that's bothered me is Chief's armour. Frankie said something about it being changed for a reason, implying it would be elaborated on in the game. There was no mention of it, in fact the intro video has other Spartans wearing the same armour so it's a standard suit. I guess it's the same Mark VI armour he was cryo'd with but the change was just an aesthetic one because of the studio switch? Though the Mark VI you can unlock for multiplayer looks more faithful to what it was and looks a lot better, so it's all kinda weird.

Firmware updates.

"You've been busy."

No was a other planet i think

I don't have the book anymore to confirm, unfortunately. It occurred during a test of Cortana with MJOLNIR armor systems prior to the battle of Reach, but it doesn't specify what planet the test took place on on Halopedia. Either way, it wasn't on Earth.

EDIT: Also, on the Mark VI not looking like it usually does, supposedly that is the Mark VI with much of it stripped off. Still doesn't make sense with the shoulder things, but that's what I heard.

Still not sure how people are getting that the Didact was digitized when he fell into the Conductor. According to the fifth Terminal, he cannot be affected by the Composer in the same way the Chief can't; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bznq4Zr2gTw&t=7m40s

Didact: Did it work? Run the simulation.
Didact: The procedure is a failure... I am still susceptible to Flood infection.
Promethean: That leaves only the Composer.
Didact: It will not work on my new form.
Promethean: Then you will lead us, as always.
Didact: You would submit to such sacrifice?
Promethean: Didact, if the Composer is our final hope to defeat the Flood, no Promethean would resist.

Slipspace opening though, definitely possible.

The ending definitely seems to be hinting at humanity's continued expansion throughout the galaxy.

Dani, I TOLD YOU THAT WASN"T HALSEY!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
now that that's out of the way, just beat the game on legendary solo. Really, really loved the legendary ending. It's like a dealer giving you a little hit of what you've been begging for, but not enough to "satisfy" the fiend.

Holy FUCK at the amount of story left out and saved for Terminals. This is frustrating and I cannot in good faith say the game has a good story when so many goddamn crucial parts of it are left to more or less extras not immediately apparent to all players. Book knowledge required still seems auxillary, so that's good, but I'd imagine this stuff would have been much clearer if that knowledge was available to all and at least the important points described in the actual game.

Questions:
1) Why wouldn't and didn't the Librarian preserve herself as well, instead of just the Didact and the indexes of all the other species? If she could preserve so much genetic material, why not her own? Why is AI form preferrable, wouldn't AI be vulnerable to the Didact being able to tamper with it too?
2) What were those tests the Didact did on himself? He mentions a simulation, but he's on the ground like he's panting from some treatment he just received. (terminal 5)
3) So the Didact and The Librarian are the two head honchos of the Forerunner in their time or what? Who was the third dude mediating discussion?

Why are the Spartans in the intro video wearing the upgraded armour Chief has? They should be wearing Mark IV, right?

I think it just a re imaging of the suit and i personally will keep it at that for my own sanity :p
Like they changed the covenant models better that way new team new style.

2) The Didact mutated himself further to try and become immune to Flood infection.

3) The Didact was the commander of the entire Forerunner military. The Librarian was the most powerful Lifeworker, a Forerunner rate which specializes in all livings things and medicine. The third Forerunner was the Master Builder who later created the Halo Array. At the time, the Master Builder was the most powerful Forerunner in terms of politcal power and influence.

In the books Chakas (343 GS) thinks he knows where the Librarian is at, she could very well be alive.

kinda wish there was a codex in the menu or something. i don't read the books so the greater picture was a bit vague to me. i only cared about the relationship between Chief and Cortana.
