Any Assassin's Creed 3 Wii U Reviews or Impressions?

Giant Bomb also didn't download the day one patch for AC3.

So, perhaps the patch will fix things up - IIRC the day 1 patch was recommended by Ubisoft to clear some issues on day 1 for PS3/360.

but so far it seems that all the multi-plat games wiiu versions end up the worst, maybe it's a launch issue, but it's definitely a concern.

Lol at the people calling GB dbags. You are what you say they are. Anyways the game looked kinda rough on the stream and since AC3 is rough on a ps3 or 360, its definitely going to be as rough if not rougher if the current thought about the Wii U hardware is true.

For context: Giant Bomb said they felt one of the opening sequences had a lower framerate than the 360 version. They noted this because they felt on the 360 this fairly scripted, controlled area was one of the smoother areas of the game. Hence noticing a framerate difference. They also felt the lighting was a bit more washed out. They didn't really go into it beyond that, and didn't play past the absurdly long tutorials to get to the proper open world environment.

And there's no way in hell AC3 is rendering at native 1080p.

EDIT: The framerate looked pretty mediocre from the footage I saw, in all areas. But I don't know how the console version plays to compare.

Try sub 15 fps on the PS3 whenever you're in a fight in Boston, and barely above 20 most of the time in the frontier.

Framerate is horrible across all versions of AC3, so if anything the WiiU version doesn't stray from that unfortunate flaw.

Funny since that's what you sound like right now.
Why do you say that? He simply answered someone's question. I myself don't care for them either.

Anyway I was hoping that this version had a stable frame rate guess its just the PC left.

I wouldn't expect Assassin's Creed 3 or pretty much any current-gen launch port to be an improvemnt in graphics on Wii U. It's not so much about Wii U not having the capability, but just the developer/publisher having little reason to invest in such resources when they're primarily goal is to just get the port out in time for launch/launch window. Slap some GamePad features on it to show off how it "plays" differently and call it a day.

It's one thing to quickly port code over, another thing to optimise it for the architecture. No matter how powerful a console is - if itisn't optimised, any ported code will never run as well as natively coded software. Basically, lazy developers are lazy developers.

Even the AC3 team said they didn't have the time allotted to do anything other than port the game over. Don't hold your hopes for an improvement over the other consoles. At the least it will be comparable.

I'm downloading the update for the game now, but I don't have any experience with the PS3 or 360 versions. So we'll see. Haven't even booted up the game yet. ...stilll patching, because everything seemingly needs a day one update. Everything. :/

It's awesome, I picked it up as well as zombiU.

Plays in 1080p and supports remote play, controller shows map, etc.

Game looks great and plays great so far. No slowdown and whatnot.

This is coming from someone who isn't a huge fan of assassin's creed so if you are a fan, you'll probably love it.

You mean upscaled 1080p.

Hard locked on me when the animus was in the middle of constructing the Opera House. What the fuck, Ubisoft. I can't even make it ten minutes into the game without it locking on me? Are you fucking serious? Besides that, game seemed fine... for that brief period of time. Bit choppy, but who knows.

Weapon switching was never a problem on other consoles since you can easily assign each weapon to diagonal buttons for fast switching.

I just verified this, and you cannot use the diagonals, only the cardinals, which means a maximum of 4 quick change slots from around a dozen options. It's not a huge hindrance, but it's far from ideal, and a touch screen seems like a far better alternative.

Cool, let us know how the game plays (on the TV as well as only on the gamepad).

those are so mainstream nowadays. i only rely on gaming blogs active for no longer than 30 days.

Just beat sequence one. In a post above, you can see I already experienced a hard lock. It seems a little choppy at times, but only a little. But I'm not sure if that's the game itself, or because of the port. Isn't it bad on the other systems as well?

I also can't figure out how to get the picture on the game pad. Hrm.

I think AC 3 would be a good game to get on the wii u

the frame rates weren't terribly bad just under whelming

Graphics and art direction was probably the best out of the third parties on GB

Batman looked nice but that had major slow down issues

That's what I meant with diagonal. The D-pad. And not really about being ideal. Because seriously, with AC3, the only weapons you'll ever use are: the Axe (or sword), the stabbing knife, arrow (because the gun is sooooo slow), and punch (for non-lethal confrontation). Anything else is useless.

Played a little bit of it earlier, seems generally fine. Some low frame rate during a couple scripted sequences. No ugly random things like disappearing textures or messed up light maps. Texturing is surprisingly clean. Looks AWESOME if you're running it in off TV mode.

It's SO annoying that I have to either sacrifice a quick-weapon slot or load the stupid menu and scroll all the way down just so I can call my horse.

And just because you only need to use certain weapons doesn't make using the others less fun. I like switching up my equipment. It sucks that it's a huge hassle on the 360/PS3. Why they got rid of the weapon wheel, I have no idea.

Is there a way to display all the hud stuff on the gamepad only and have a free TV?

I played the demo on an expo, and it had a major issue of the bugs. I fell of everything i tried to climb on and couldn't pick up weapons.

Played a friend's copy a little today on the Wii U and it's fine. Playing on the off-TV is a great feature and I like the map display and ease of access to menus and equipment because they're all displayed on the pad. It just helps the flow of the game so much more. Also I have a 120hz TV and it looked nice in motion, and nice and crisp. Maybe it's my bad eyes or something but it did look good.

It still has the same Ubisoft problems/garbage visually that is in because of their engine, but the FPS wasn't that bad for me (You will notice the vsync on the Wii U version, at least that's what it looked like to me) and I used the patch before I started. It still does stutter, but doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the PS3 version did. I didn't see the Xbox version yet though.

A thing to consider with these ports, is that if AC3 had come out near the start of the 360's life cycle, it would have run badly. Developers have had 6 years to optimise and improve their engines to run very well on the PS3/360's architectures, so having to port those engines to entirely different architectures will obviously come with some teething problems. Any game that is a port of a 360/PS3 will inevitably run not as well, until developers learn how to properly utilise the Wii U hardware.

Did you check if you could play hudless? Can you move stuff from the TV to the gamepad?

Thanks Thoraxes. I picked it up for the Wii U and was debating on keeping it or switching it for the PS3 version. My PC can run the game (I have the whole series via Steam) but I rather be able to play it on my consoles.

I love the GB guys but dude, that's one lame ass defense.

Wow, someone has the balls to just say it. I've always been too scared.
Hey, everyone's welcome to their opinion, but the appeal of Giant Bomb is that they're not afraid to speak their minds on whatever they are covering. We're seeing their raw opinions being formed in realtime as they play these games and no other site comes close to matching that.

Of course, if you think they are "biased" or dislike the way they express themselves I could understand why you wouldn't enjoy it.

I never read any of their reviews and don't take their opinions on games as facts or anything (infact, my tastes usually differ from theirs), but i still enjoy their video content a lot and they're pretty funny people.
Their E3 coverage was awesome.

Just don't take their Quicklooks as review (same goes for Total Biscuit's WTFs, really).

I did not check about the hudless stuff, and by check I mean explicitly remember it (maybe I didn't notice because there might not have been any, i'm not sure lol). I only spent about an hour or so with it while everyone went to get food.

You can play the whole game only on the pad if you want, which is basically just normal console AC controls.

No problem.

No problem. The off-TV play for it is really nice too and quick and painless to do, if you're into that kind of thing.

I played the game last night in my bed totally in the gamepad. It worked well, but its an awkward process, you go through the game options to enable it.
