Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

Saints Row would have been a joke choice and Ryan knew it. Brad had nothing to do with that.

Joke or not, the majority of people in that room liked SR3 more than Skyrim.

Goddamn, GOTY 2011 still makes me disappointed. That was the only time in GB history where I felt they were conforming and not just going with what they felt.

I should say that I think Skyrim is a boring ass game, but still.

Why would it be a joke choice? Did you play it? Deckers.Die was brilliant and the rest of the game was pretty good, too.

That said - one year on and I'm still playing Skyrim. I haven't touched SR3 since I first beat it a year ago.

I haven't played either game, and just going off of that discussion, Saints Row was the clear choice.

NEXT YEAR GIANTBOMB NEEDS TO IMPLEMENT FILIBUSTER REFORM!

The Walking Dead is nearly as bad with the fucked up saves.

SO fucking glad that bullshit didn't happen to me.

Telltale are shit at the customer service stuff. It's pretty hilarious how bad they are.

If the GOTY votes are not "What is the game I had the most fun with this year" and are instead "What game makes us look most credible," then they're basically worthless from any perspective.

Exactly. If they were trying to be factual, Dark Souls was the only winner. ;)

The Walking Dead is nearly as bad with the fucked up saves.

Both XCOM and Absolution (and VLR, although I doubt they'll even talk about it, I doubt Patrick will get to it in time) have massive save-breaking bugs, or had them for about two weeks after launch

It's been a great year for bugs

Not really. Ryan admitted later on that he wished he had chosen SR3 over Skyrim and felt bad about it. Brad basically railroaded the discussion and made it clear he wasn't going to budge: either give in to his demand of Skyrim GOTY or sit in the podcast room forever.
And a couple of weeks ago [on the Bombcast when discussing THQ's troubles] they flat-out called Saints Row their Game of the Year.

As long as Jeff doesn't discount Walking Dead on account of not playing it, then that's fine. At least they all played Skyrim and Saints Row the Third to a point.

If I remember correctly they were fairly explicit in giving the award to the 360 and PC versions of Skyrim only. Still bullshit that Ryan picked it over his own personal goty though.

Don't forget AC3.

I am getting increasingly worried by how really buggy games are still selling fantastically.

If you were a publisher looking at the bottom line, after games like Skyrim and AC3, would you be willing to go above and beyond with your QA or just do the bare minimum necessary?

If that's the reason Walking Dead doesn't win, I wouldn't have a problem with that. It's a pretty quick fix though. No way is it in the same league as Skyrim's problems on PS3.

Yeah, I remember that. It was still a cop-out though.

I don't feel they need to disregard a game if their personal experience with it was fine, even if it does have a lot of bugs they either didn't encounter or that occur on another platform.

It's not a seal of approval for the quality of the game on all platforms, just to say it's the game they enjoyed the most. Skyrim obviously WASN'T that, but the PS3 version being broken doesn't matter if they played it on PC and 360.

I think they need to do the final discussion of the 2/3 remaining games the next day. They all were pretty tired by the end of that pocast that they didn't want to fight over them anymore. Get some rest, gather ammunition and kill each other tomorrow.

thinking saints row couldnt win makes you a joke, buddy. That was def one of my fav games from a year of fantastic games. Ignoring quality and thinking something that doesnt take itself seriously cant win awards? You could be on board of the oscars

For the record, Skyrim was a completely shit game critics and nerds fawned over cos it had dat 'atmosphere'. If it was the exact same game with crappy graphics or made all linear-like everyone would agree it was terrible. Truth.

I think that's a good idea. Maybe they'll be forced into having separate recording sessions because of the CBS/Gamespot offices and how they need to book timeslots for their podcasts?

Yeah I think that's fine, just as long as they acknowledge that not all players on all platforms will have the same experience with the game as they did (which is what they did with Skyrim and what I hope they'll do if they choose The Walking Dead.)

SR3 is probably my favorite open world game of the gen. Hoping if 4 can even make it out that it expands upon it like SR did but with actual good design like SR3.

Oh wait, it's a handheld game. Nevermind.

The bolded is the truest statement in this entire discussion.

I agree with this. Whether you thought the argument for Skyrim was convincing or not (I actually didn't think it was), I don't think the existence of the PS3 version should disqualify the game. They should judge the games on their own experiences. I know when I think about the games I enjoyed the most throughout the year, I don't take into consideration how well they played on other platforms. Obviously, my opinions and the opinions of random gamers everywhere don't hold the same weight as Giant Bomb's, but I still think the decision process can only be fairly based on what they actually played, no matter how many people read their thoughts.

I definitely see the point of view of those that feel it's not fair to award Bethesda with the shit they pulled releasing the PS3 version in the disgraceful condition it was in but at the end of the day it's an impossible task to consider every release and every port when choosing, so the best policy is to strictly base the decision on what you experienced.

I think it would be an excellent policy to adopt, Vinny playing Sleeping Dogs when ever things slow down. Actually, Vinny playing Sleeping Dogs should bump just about any other content.

Truth. Subversive humor aside, it's a totally average open-world game.
Storytelling aside, The Walking Dead is a totally average adventure game.

See the problem with that thinking?

Sometimes nailing one particular aspect is enough to provide an unforgettable experience (especially something as illusive as humour or emotional storytelling).

That said, I completely disagree that SR3 falls into that category as there were other things it excelled at such as co-op - even going so far as to give player 2 a seperate task during mini games.

Ok there is only one way to truly end this debate.

What was Vinny's vote for GOTY last year?

And if it wasn't skyrim or saints row which of those two where on top of his top 10 list?

Since Brad is the one who goes crazy during GOTY discussions, I am almost willing to bet that somehow Mass Effect 3 becomes Giantbomb's GOTY. lol

Saints Row would have been the interesting choice that would have had a lot of character and said a lot about GB. Skyrim was the boring safe choice, like The King's Speech winning best picture over The Social Network.

Brad will push for Diablo 3 to win best storytelling and best multiplayer game.
No chance against Walking Dead and Spec Ops. Hell, I'd even throw Binary Domain in there.

Did the have those categories in the past? I can't remember.

Oh yeah, Brad will probably go with Journey on that one.

Wouldn't surprise me, haha. Seriously, if Brad goes crazy again I might just skip the whole thing, but I have a feeling they will mostly agree this time around. Plus he always goes on and on about how they have to "pick their battles", so it doesn't have to be the GOTY one where he does it.

I actually felt kind of tricked with SR3, I bought it several months after Giantbomb hyped it so much and it's so utterly mediocre. Had so much more fun doing nothing in GTA4 and Just Cause 2. The few hours I've put into Sleepy Dawgs has been fun as well, probably enjoyed it more than the first 3 episodes of The Walking Dead because of how good it looks and plays.
