My biggest complaint with creator owned work? In my opinion, 9 times out of 10, the art is just... BAD. I'm so used to good art I can't deal with it. And once you get really GOOD creator owned art, they tend to get hired by one of the big 2.

Art is a time issue, thus a money issue. Even good artists have trouble doing good art when they can't dedicate a lot of time into each page. The best solution, imo, is to make shorter comics until you find your audience, kind of like series of pilot episodes, but the industry is not much up to it. Which is why I like the idea of Image's "creator owned heroes" or "Dark Horse Presents", but I don't think neither of those sell much.

Where? I see top paid and it's all DC all day.

Maybe it's tailored torwards what you browse...

Oh I understand. As I said it can just be hard to "look past it".

I'm so glad Marvel Now stuff is coming out. I'm a marketing department little dumb bitch. They say "hype" and I hype.

Marvel Now hype is one that I have been nurturing for so long it seems.

Another thing to note, especially in terms of Image books, is that no one gets paid until after the book pulls in money, so you're asking an artist for a commitment of almost half a year without getting paid, unless the writer makes enough to pay the artist out of pocket. That's why Saga looks amazing, because BKV could afford to hire an artist, as opposed to other Image book where the artist and writer basically closing their eyes and hoping for the best together.

Money.

I've seen a lot of talented unknown artists who aren't willing to keep working a day job and build a portfolio in indie comics because their time is worth $150 a page (which is around Marvel's starting page rate, so you can halve that for an indie book).

Meanwhile they're making no comics and no money off of comics, and getting paid $7.25 an hour stocking shelves or making frapuccinos.

Starting out both artists and writers need to be willing to give and take to get to the finish line.

Nobody would have looked at Kirkman's Funkotron comics if he didn't have Tony Moore drawing them.

"For once, you and I are in total agreement."

Man, Amy Reeder is really good! :O

Just read Halloween Eve. She needs to draw more comics.

Also really good is Franchesco Gaston who is drawing Bloodstrike, but will soon be out of a job once Rob Liefeld takes over Bloodstrike again.

Just please leave Glory alone Rob. Pleeeease!

Hopefully Gaston ends up at Marvel or DC, he's gotten really damn good over the past few months.

Eh I can understand not doing comics for someone else for pennies hoping it'll get you somewhere because you feel your time is more valuable. However, I don't understand why you wouldn't make your own comics if that's the way you feel. Either way, you should be doing comics if that's what you want to do in life. Whether that's Superman or web comic you make with your friends. There's no reason to wait around until someone gives you a nicely paying gig.

If Ryan Higgins and Larry's Comics is any indication (GROSS), they're losing big with Marvel NOW! so I think they're working over time to maintain interest in their flagging line of comic books.

what do you mean losing big with marvel now? it's only just begun...

Another slow issue, but All New X-Men is interesting enough for me to try at least the first story arc. I'm sort of curious about how this book will relate to the upcoming re-launch of Uncanny.

Really? I thought their initiative was doing good. Can you please elaborate Birdie?

Sales across the board are way shitty compared to actual retailer orders, and those two particular clods were pointing out that Marvel's not offering reorders. Now, Higgins is an unabashed DC fanboy (even though runs a comic book store which by its nature ought to appeal to readers of anything) and Larry's Comics is a racist, misogynist, homophobe; so, you know, grains of salt. But on the retailer level it doesn't appear to be having anything near the impact that the New 52 had.

hmm well it's still early in the game, i've got faith.

Oh yeah I mean, if nothing else, creatively I think they're off to a great start, and I think a lot of the books have a chance at solid word of mouth. But it will probably never be the kind of lifts all ships thing that the New 52 was.

Yeah I got it in the Marvel app and read it this afternoon, really enjoyed it. No idea what's with all the hate it's been getting on here after one issue.

1) Marvel
2) Delays
3) The Classic "You Left Deadwood To Make John From Cincinnati" False Analogy From Uncanny X-Force Fans

Wow. If you haven't read today's A+X, you really need to! Rogue and Black Widow, Iron Man and Kitty Pryde.
Black Widow kisses Rogue

I follow a lesbian comic book fan on tumblr who spends most of the day "shipping" everything that has boobs. Can't wait to see her reaction.

2000AD is incredible again this week, I realise no one cares but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it.

In prog 1804 a couple of new stories started, then in 1807 three of the stories suddenly crossed over into each other unexpectedly (one strip ended with the lead character kicking the door of another character open shifting the viewpoint to the next strip). It's now led up to a massive threat to Dredd that will be the focus of the entire prog next week, then it's the Christmas issue topping off the best year of the comic since 1977.

Thor & FF were entertaining, I have no idea what is going on in All-New X-Men or Batman Inc.

4) It's pretty slow. Uncanny X-Force hit the ground running. This book is going to take 3-4 issues just to get their team together.

That's a good point. My tolerance for books showing teams slowly assembling is getting lower. They're superheroes, they fight evil. Throw evil at their face while they are randomly on the same place and boom!

Note that I'm bitching out of bitch because I haven't got the chance to read anything yet.

Two issues in and Bendis is already writing Wolverine as a joke character. I should have know better.

Young X-Men pops on the JGIOHL campus and Logan recognizes the scent of Scott instantly and goes berserk but doesn't recognize the scent of the love of his life until he is attacking then all while drooling...yeah right.

He thinks Hawk is his hero for bringing then to the future and is immediately put to sleep in the most comical fashion by Jean who didn't know she was a telepath and is learning everything on the go. Needless to say Jean mentions Logan's thoughts are disgusting but fails to realize how deep their relation was...

The only thing missing is a snarky remark about Logan being smelly.

I get it that this is his depiction of the character and it's fine even if it disrespect the fans. I just don't get it why Bendis insist on pretending he writes Logan seriously. You put him on the Avengers just because of the sales spidey and him would bring. None of then, but especially Logan never contributed with anything to the Avengers while they were there under your care. They were just posing for the covers. And again, that's fine. The Avengers are Cap and Tony team. That's how it should be.

If you're trying to satirize a character at least do it right, Garth Ennis did it better than you'll ever do.

In the end the blame is all on Marvel who has handled Wolverine horribly for almost 10 years. The only good thing to come out of Wolverine on that time is fucking Jason Aaron. And Hugh Jackman.

That's because being the butt of a quick joke/ass kicking is all Wolverine, I mean Logan, I mean James the Biggest Simp in the MU, is good for.

He sucks.

I realized recently what a terrible character Wolverine is fundamentally (even though I love him in so much stuff). His main asset (claws) is utterly useless in his medium. He can hardly ever use them to kill, and that's what they were made to do. So fucking idiotically stupid.

Actually the only way his claws can really work are on comics were suspension of disbelief is more easily achievable.

I mean, how many times have we seen Wolverine ripping cars in half, or cutting stuff way thicker than the length of his claws? None of that shit would be possible on a realistic scenario.

This is all made evident by that infamous scene of the Wolverine Origins movie were Logan goes Looney Tunes on a fire ladder.

Wolverine in New Avengers is pretty great.

old MAn Logan and Enemy of the State are awesome.

I'm sorry but I disagree on the New Avengers. That book is all about Bendis running nuts with his mancrush on Luke Cage.

Old Man Logan and Enemy of the State were good stories by a writer who at least tried writing Wolverine stuff seriously. Thank God for Mark Millar (I can't believe I'm saying this...).

Wolverine was mostly a joke character in Bendis' Avengers, but Spider-man got a lot of usage throughout. Not sure why people still target Spider-man as being there just for covers/sales when he has been used in the Avengers more than Thor and Steve Rogers this past decade.

His issue was the highlight of AvX, if you ask me.
