The facebook numbers...WHAT DO THEY MEAN?! WHAT DO THEY MEAN

First couple were actually my friends that I talk to on fb pretty much everyday.

Seems like the people I chat with most on fb chat.

It's not the case for me. I don't talk to the 1st guy that often online. Actually, I haven't talked to any of my top 5 stalker online at all in the past 6 months or so.

Man, this is weirding me out.

Not surprised at most of the top ten (ex-gf, good friends etc.).

I'm going with number of messages sent within some preceding period (e.g. last month).

EDIT: immediately disproved by Replicant.

It looks like it's who I view the most, not the other way around. Can't imagine it's anything else.

exactly mine too. I never use the chat and my top 10 people I hardly talk to on facebook. I talk to them off it, but not on it.

The first 6 or so made perfect sense. They could have gone either way, I interact with them often, or they do to me. I look at their profiles, they look at mine. Girlfriend, best/good friends, mom etc. Then at like 7 there was a girl that I know had a huge crush/stalked me (and is a close friend of my girlfriends ironically) and her gay close friend..

Hmmm...rabbit hole keeps going deeper. One of my "top friends" is a girl I met at a party that I befriended, posted on her wall a few times, messaged her, then nothing for several months. Yet somehow she's still near the top. I wonder if perhaps the amount of time since befriending is also accounted for in the algorithm...

Actually, I later found out that she was apparently crushing on me that entire weekend and that she systematically combed my entire profile with another friend (who is also pretty high up). Oh man, maybe there's some validity to profile views @_@

Unlikely. I rarely, if ever check my 1st person's profile. Ditto with 2nd and 3rd person.

I talk IRL (but never online) to 4th a lot and I often wonder if he has a crush on me.
I had a crush on 5th but he was a shitty friend so I stopped talking to him about 1.5 year ago.
6th and 7th are people I regularly talk to IRL on day to day basis and sometimes online.
I used to be close to 8th but haven't spoken to him in months.
9th, and 10th are completely unexpected.

Weird. The person I talk to alot online and often comment on my Facebook (my good friend) is not even in my top 15.

And it actually is a girl who used to stalk me.... Creepy-tastic.

Edit: And number two is a female friend who I had a crush on, but moved away. SHIT!

1-10 on my list...

Its pretty accurate so far... the first 3 girls are ones that are really interested in me but I rarely talk to them/check out their profile.

WELL DONE!

The top people in my list are exactly the same as the ones who show in my chat box by default when I get myself offline, just not in the same exact order. When I'm offline, it shows 13 friends there which are the first 13 ones in that source list. Facebook wouldn't store that info. Even if they did, they wouldn't make it available like that.

Just to clarify, the #1 person on my list is my best friend. It makes sense because she's constantly bugging me to use Facebook and tells me she checks my page all the time, and leaves me comments on occasion, though I hardly ever reply (haven't in like 6 months). And I never check her page, so it's not based traffic from me.

Kind of falls apart with #2 though: cool Hollywood writer dude I adore but don't know personally. We exchanged comments a few years ago but that's about it. Maybe he checks my page out of morbid curiosity as to why I haven't used it in like a year? I dunno, but I doubt it.

I don't think it's "Who's stalking you" I think it's who you interact with the most and recently, be it chat, timeline/wall posts, whatever. Looking at the top few ones on mine, it seems like it's the people I have used FB chat with the most. For instance the first one is my friend who works the night shift and talks to me on FB quite a lot. The rest seem to follow a similar pattern.

The good thing about having small number of friends list is that you can draw a pattern. It's obvious that an organization 'friend' (yes, you can friend an organization these days. I'm friends with "Japan Foundation") will be the least likely visitor to your page.

It's not. See mine and other people's comments above.

I think it is a combination of post, views to/from, messages, and the like. It seems to mirror the people placed in the mini friends box. The box, and this list, always seems to contain the obvious and a few randoms.

People I barely talk to. Almost no connections whatsoever. I doubt the list means anything.
Has to have some sort of logic to it. Otherwise the first 10 people being people I interact with a lot wouldnt make sense. Like others have suggested it is probably a collection or reasons it grabs from.

Another thing I don't think anyone noticed. Look in the lower left corner where that grid of pictures of your friends is. Notice something about the order of them? It's the same as the list this thing is. So you don't need to go to all that trouble to get this "list" if it even means anything.

Considering how low key I am on Facebook, this list is rather interesting....

Yeah, it's definitely more intriguing if you don't use Facebook that often be it the chat or the commenting box. I rarely use them if at all, so it surprised me to see my top 5 and to an extent, top 10.

It's not. That grid list my 3rd, my 7th, my 8th, my 10th, and my 13th first along with other lower level people.

Close but not quite. There were three people in my top ten chat that didn't show up in the top ten here.

Don't know man, it's a perfect duplication of my chat icons. Take note the people that have their devices set to be offline for the FB chat will still show up in the numbers list.

Yeah. Makes it rather easy to tell its not who Im creeping on, or communicating with, but its definitely got me scratching my head...

Any enterprising hacker-types wanna try writing a script that spits out a named list according to this ordered list? I have an idea of how to do it, but my programming skills aren't up to snuff.

The person I know I've "stalked" more than anyone doesn't even show up in the first 15 of them. And people I hardly talk with or "stalk", show up in the first five?

People I got range from Never talked to in chat ever, rarely talk to on facebook, but always irl, talk to a lot on FB and my cousins GF who I fooled around with once but never talk to on FB.....I think it's for real.

From what I can see, it's more of who's been looking at your profile frequently than the other way around.

Mind you, if you post a lot of interesting stuff like trailers etc, it just simply means that they went there to look at it and not to look at your handsome face. Contents of your FB must also be considered, I think. That's the only way I can explain my top #3.

ITT no one else recognises the dude Dev posted

I'm 99.9% certain it's Timedog

We didn't respond because it should be common knowledge that it is, in fact, timedawg.

My first was my roommate back in college. We don't really talk much on facebook, more offline rather. If anything it's his fiance that's talk to me more on it.

Yeah. There are probably lots of things to take into account here. The top one is in a group of people that can't see shit on my profile page though. Which makes it even more weird.

They're hoping that maybe this time around you slack off in your security/permission and let them view more of your pics. HE HE HE

I'm thinking part of it is the people I look up on Facebook, don't even really have to interact with them. One of my top 3 was my crush who I rarely interact with but visit her page quite often (not a crazy amount haha). She was tagged in a few photos with me, but other than that.

Wonder how it really works, top spots are my sister and my best friend so that makes sense. First I thought it was the same people as in my chat bar but there are a few differences though.

I've half a mind to post this on my Facebook page along with the top ten. I know that at least two of them will freak out if I do...lol

I doubt that Facebook would ever be willing to part with that algorithm though, as interesting as it would be to see it.

Noooooo. No no no no no no. Let's not spread this around. Please.

I don't think I've visited that many friends' profile but just to be safe....

If OP said it was on reddit then it's already been spread around. Besides, that's how we're discussing it in the first place. It's not like it's our dirty little secret or anything.

But no, I probably won't do that.

EDIT: Here's the Reddit thread, along with their takes on it.

I have zero posts on my wall for people to interact with, I've never used FB chat and have had it turned off for as long as I've known that was an option, and I generally only like and comment on a few people's things. So for me, it's a list of who I've liked/commented/etc on their pages. It's rare that I'll even look at someone's page, if ever.

Can't be whose stalking you, as my mother is constantly checking my Facebook to see what I'm doing, and she's not first.

It seems to who you interact with most, as the top ones for me are close friends/family.

Came to post this. Get real-time updates of who's keeping track of you.

Perfect for instances like that. You see when that someone special is looking at your profile, and just send them a message saying "How you doin'?"

"Every action their friends take is a potential newsfeed story. Facebook calls these actions "Edges." That means whenever a friend posts a status update, comments on another status update, tags a photo, joins a fan page, or RSVP's to an event it generates an "Edge," and a story about that Edge might show up in the user's personal newsfeed."

I was thinking maybe the rankings was based on EdgeRank, the algorithm used in newsfeeds (above), until I read some of your comments. I'm not so sure anymore.

I think this is the locally cached list it uses to generate search results instantaneously. I've seen it before, it's their guess of who you're closest to/are most interested or likely to search for.

Yeah it's just this http://thekeesh.com/2011/08/who-does-facebook-think-you-are-searching-for/

My list is the same fromt he first five or so people. It's not just friends either, as sure enough a couple of non-friends who I've creeped the profiles of periodically show up close to the top.

Interesting. There is certainly some weight put to interaction since the number 1 person on the list is one of my buddies that I have been in a multi-year long poke war with. After that it gets a little strange. My ex-girlfriend who I have sent thousands of messages to isn't in the 10 at least. The top of the list had more people that I have been friends with since high school (maybe length of friendship is a factor?) but the 3rd person on the list is someone I have only been friends with for a few months and who I have only chatted on facebook a few times. Everyone who came up were people I had facebook messaged, except for my mom (who I presume checks my facebook often) and a girl I met at a party over a year ago and haven't talked to since (potential stalker found)!

Interesting list anyway.

edit: on trying it again my ex-girlfriend showed up second. So now I am not so sure.

Not exactly...It would simply be to take the list and essentially convert each number to the corresponding profile's name. Nothing real-time, and certainly not counter-stalking material. Just a tool to make reading the list far easier.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's some degree of "atrophy" when it comes to link strength; however, it's relatively weak. I interacted very frequently with a girl for about a year before we stopped talking to each other. It took several months for her to drop off of my top friends lists.
