Speculation on my part:

Whoever the villain was fighting in that brief scene, they weren't human. They were wearing metal helmets. They may be Klingons, like the helmet wearing ones from ST2009 deleted scenes.

If so, maybe Botany Bay was recovered by the Klingons who experimented with the crew to work on fixing their ridges and only 1 superman survives and it isn't Khan. Then due to the horrors of Klingon experiments, he gets bitter about his exile from Earth and goes back for revenge. Old Spock sacrifices himself at the end to save Kirk and Young Spock.

You know I was going to write the same thing about the Klingons finding him and them having to face their brutality instead of Kirk showing him kindness, but then got rid of it and just put that he would be forced awake and returns to his old ways.

Makes sense that it could happen, nice to see I'm not alone, lol.

This is actually a trailer to throw off the Fans.

The Main inspiration for this movie will be the Trouble with Tribbles, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing A Tribble.

I have no idea as a non-Trekkie what or who was shown to me (outside the established cast).

But yay, I am excited the sequel is finally near~

The villain being Khan or a Superman makes less sense based on the synopsis though:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The villain being Khan or a Superman makes less sense based on the synopsis though:

Gary Mitchell using guns makes no sense either.

Maybe in this re-imaged world, this Superman is even stronger than before due to Klingon experiments. Also, maybe he was rescued by Starfleet and joins them briefly while he plots to destroy them?

Also, is Gary Mitchell really iconic? The only villain that has ever been iconic in TOS was Khan.

Well let's not forget this bit: http://trekmovie.com/2012/07/09/karl-urban-reveals-cumberbatch-star-trek-sequel-character/

The latest report on the villain character being played by Benedict Cumberbatch comes from SFX Magazine who are quoting Karl Urban from a junket for his upcoming film Dredd. According to SFX, Urban said of Cumberbatch:

"He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

No, never heard of him till these threads.

I really want this movie to be more representative of Star Trek philosophy. Watching the trailer, I don't think that this is going to happen. :/

Ya but Orci denied he was Gary Mitchell according to the same article you linked.

Maybe they're pulling a fast one on us and are naming one of the Botany Bay Supermen Gary Mitchell.

The people making Godzilla in 1998 also denied that the leaked designs of the monster was the actual design in the movie. It totally was. People deny unofficial leaks all the time.

I would prefer a Superman than Gary Mitchell. At least the Superman would be more plausible and possible to defeat.

Enterprising Young Men if you're referring to the Japanese trailer.

Have youtubed around, seems like a new rendition specifically for this new film.
I guess we'll have to wait.

I really hope they do release the full length trailer next week.

Seems the guys BC was fighting must be Klingons. Not only do they have the helmets the ST2009 deleted scenes Klingons did, but they actually have a Bat'leth.

Why would Gary Mitchell be fighting Klingons with guns? A Botany Bay crew member being experimented on by Klingons would have a reason to fight Klingons and use guns.

There is a saying that goes "..., Talent borrows and genius steals."

And I while do realise that judging anything off of a 60 second announcement (of what is effectively in itself) an announcement is ludicrous this whole thing just seems so 'off tone' already.

I'll reserve 'judgement' until I see the final/finished trailer at least but if you were to say to me..., Abrams, Orci, Kurtzman and Lindeloff are doing Star Trek + The Dark Knight then frankly the chances it's going to be something fresh and original aren't great.

Judging but what (admittedly what little) I've seen of Star Trek Into Darkness already it seems they've managed to disappoint those already meagre expectations already.

The talent has borrowed.

Though in saying that I SFX money shots of the Federation vessels hitting the water was cool.

As if with all things of this nature we shall have to wait and see.

Looking at the extended JP teaser again, ya it can't be Old Spock. It can't even be Pike because the hand I'm pretty sure is making a Vulcan live long and prosper gesture and the uniform worn looks like Spock's. It's quite clearly Young Spock.

It's still unimaginable that they would kill Spock in the 2nd movie.

Can this annoying trend of comparing everything to Nolan Batman please end?

It would help if the companies stopped aping his fucking trailers. I knew there would be inception BRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTT'SSSSSSS in the trailer before watching it.
