Another movie that contrasted the series. They all but ignored the prime directive when Picard was so adament about keeping it upheld in the series.

Good point. He wouldn't even help a whole planet that was addicted to drugs but he was fighting to the death to save a few dozen people from their exiled relatives.

The hand of the guy dying isn't wearing a Starfleet uniform. It appears to be some kind of dark clothing. Maybe it's Khan/Mitchell, or maybe it's a retired Pike.
I saw speculation on another forum that it could be Kirk in his funeral uniform, the one you see at the beginning of this preview.

Remember when there were rumors back in 2009 that they were gonna off Chekov midway through the movie? And everyone was like "No. They can't!"

And then they turned Vulcan inside out instead.

The Khan reference in the Japanese trailer is undeniable, but with Alice Eve looking so much like Elizabeth Dehner, I could see "Into Darkness" being a reference to the Enterprise crossing into the galactic barrier. At this point I'd be surprised if Cumberbatch isn't Gary Mitchell.

Or the scene could be completely out of context and not what people expect at all.

Ding ding ding! Winner!

Do people still take trailers 100% literally? They are designed for maximum hypage, not to mention some things are left on the cutting room floor that were seen in the trailer.

While I'm conflicted on if this is Khan or Gary, I'm pretty sure that moment at the end of the trailer was simply to play on the nostalgia of old school Star Trek fans. The vast bulk of people that make the 2009 Trek movie a box office success were not Trek fans. The nostalgia/call back to Wrath of Khan would be lost on them.

I think it was more a wink and a nod, and in the actual film, it probably won't play out the same way.

I'm already looking forward to 2016's Star Trek: The Search for Kirk.

Are we sure the blondes in the trailer aren't two different blondes? Theres the one that is all smirky at Kirk, and then there's the one screaming in horror. Are they the same blonde? I'm old now and starlets are blending into each other with increasing regularity as my memory goes.

Is it Dehner? Is it Carol Marcus? is it Nurse Chapel? is it Yeoman Rand?

I wish any of these questions actually mattered, because keeping the characters secret serves absolutely zero purpose.

Jesus, this will be Giacchino's first score since John Carter, or his first score since MI4 if we're talking about movies people actually saw.

That is 14 months (or 17 months, lolz) between scores. STIT's should be pretty amazing with all that time.

Holy shit, yesssss.

I'm hoping it's Carol Marcus and not Denher.

I want this to be about a Botany Bay Superman so they can have a philosophical discussion about genetically engineering humans and eugenics. We are about to enter that stage of society so it's a discussion that merits being brought up.

I have no idea as a non-Trekkie what or who was shown to me (outside the established cast).

But yay, I am excited the sequel is finally near~

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of space in this trailer. A lot of earth, which as a non trek nerd, seems weird. Is earth commonly a target?

There was a lot of earth in ST2009. Besides, its just a trailer. Abrams saving that good spae shit for the film.

Speculation:

Could the multiple alien planets we saw be a Genesis planet? That would make Alice Eve Carol Marcus.

Maybe they invent this device sooner in nuTrek because of salvaged Nero ship parts from the future boosting technological development.

only in movies, as far as I know on TNG everything usually takes place far far from earth.

in the original series they used to swing by earth all the time, except it was usually in 60's or 30's ala time travel.

I'm not sure anything would have been salvaged from that. You know it being in a black hole and all.

Booooo.

Booooo. I'm going to be so bummed if this isn't Mitchell. :(

You keep assuming it's going to be the same thing. Being optimistic about blockbusters and marketing is a mistake. You will only be betrayed, and all your excitement and joy will be destroyed. Such is the fate of all things.

Now I'm really curious on how your reaction to the PacRim trailer will be. ;P

I don't understand why anyone would be excited about Mitchell. Why would anyone want to see Kirk fist fighting a god? The ethics and societal impacts of genetic engineering and eugenics is a far more socially relevant issue and is plausible at the same time. Getting into eugenics would also bring back the spirit of TOS where their adventures were really exploring the social issues of the 1960s but disguised as sci-fi.

If you have Netflix streaming I highly recommend it. Has a good deal of TNG cameos and it gets pretty action packed at times. I'm biased though as I love DS9.

I really should. For some reason I slogged through a lot of the inferior Voyager yet didn't attempt to watch all of DS9. From what I've heard, the last few seasons with the Dominion war are pretty awesome.

TOS was all about Kirk fist fighting gods. I loved every minute of it!

Besides, I've already seen a big screen Kahn film. I'd rather see them tackle something else. Hell, I'd rather see them do something completely new but a big screen Gary Mitchell film would do me good.

DS9 gets really good from the end of S2 right to the end. The Riker beard theory generally applies to Sisko's beard.

There are also several great character development episodes and plot episodes in S1 and early S2.

If you really want to skip through S1 and S2, just watch the S1 premiere, The Nagus, Vortex, Duet, the S1 finale and S2 3-part premiere, Armageddon Game, The Maquis 2-parter and then everything after that.

Haven't been following any GAF Trek threads so maybe this was already discussed, but I just saw that IDW is doing a tie-in comic and issue #1 of their Star Trek ongoing last year covered the Mitchell story. Might not mean anything, or they could have been asked to set it up.

Article mentions the writer of the comic "is working under the guidance of Star Trek and sequel writer/producer Roberto Orci."

Yeah. No one knows if it's actual setup or just the comics doing their own thing. I'm going to assume the latter. I still want to pick up these books.

Looks good. Last scene in JP version definitely makes it look like a Khan remake. KHHHAAAAANNNN!!!!

This movie isn't touching on social issues, get real. Did you not watch the 2009 movie?

Khan has been done, and done well. Let Mitchell have a go.

Yeah, they don't look too bad. I kind of dug some of their Who and early Angel comics so I might have to check it out.

Not sure how a comic sets up a movie when 99% of the movie audience won't have seen the comic.
