Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwLyNm6YZ1A

It's the video I posted a few pages back, nothing new for a lot of you guys, but for this person in particular it might help. Imo it's a significant loss in shadow detail at medium. Jarring LOD distances too. In all honesty I just can't go any lower than high. But ultra is anything but ultra. The awful LOD distance is still there, just less awful. I'd settle for Very High or High.

I've been trying to do another video comparison but what's there to compare? What are the differences in vegetation, environment and terrain? They all look the SAME no matter the settings. I hate graphical settings thrown in just for kicks, actually doing nothing to help, and even making things more confusing.

Cool, thanks for the info.

This game is strange. Two days ago I had solid 60fps everywhere, with the cards at around 50% utilization. Now I started up the game and it is stuttering like hell and I'm having 35-45fps. I changed absolutely nothing in the game or the computer, although I don't remember what I used for vsync last time. GPU utilization is the same (50%) and CPU isn't fully used either. Any ideas what the culprit could be?

Finally got a chance to watch this and your other video....extremely helpful, thanks!

I'll be turning down PostFX to Medium as it looks like it doesn't do a whole lot for the amount of hit you take in framerate.

GTX670 OC
I7 3770
16gb of RAM
Nvidia 306.97

I get between 42 and 60 fps with everything maxed except AO which is set to SSAO , very high shadows instead of ultra and no MSAA.
A2C set to enhanced.

Works wonderfully and I don't even have the right drivers.

What's the screenshot key for the game? I don't mean the Steam one, the game seems to have one native to the game and those don't turn out with the colors messed up like the ones in FRAPS does. I found a bunch of screenshots at C:\Users\UserName/Documents\my games\Far Cry 3\Screenshots that I didn't even know I took. Is it just Prnt Screen?

:P

EDIT: Figured it out...Print Screen takes a screenshot with no HUD elements, and Scroll Lock takes one with HUD elements in place.

One more question: Does anyone one know what to set the Gameprofile to so it won't ask me if I want to play with a game pad every time I boot up the game?

So, just playing around with this.. I can have everything on it's highest setting with SSAO, and am pulling average of 60fps if I have no AA.

If I pop on some AA it takes off 15-20fps no matter what setting. It looks okay with AA to be honest. No Vsync.

This at 1920x1080 with a OC'd 3570k at 4.2 and a 7950

I've found changing V-SYnc and render ahead settings and then changing them back fixes this.

i-5 2320 3.0 ghz
6 gb ram
660 Ti 2 gb

DX 11, 1080p, Ultra, HDAO, 2x AA and I'm getting 30-40 fps consistently. Dropping it down to the High preset got me around 50-60 but I got a ton of stutter and it never stayed locked at 60.

OMG I just tried forcing this to 30fps via the settings and it looks like utter shite! Almost made me feel sick playing for 5 mins. Is this really what console versions look/feel like to play (or even worse)?

*shudder*

Back to 60fps now =0) Was just curious.

I was prepared to play the game at 30fps to get around the hitching/stutter, but I just didn't like it. Aiming just feels too imprecise at that frame rate when I'm used to playing these games at 60. I've moved onto other games now while I wait for a patch.

When I play in DX9 I have no crosshair for my sniper and bow when I aim down sites. As in in the scope theres no lines so i can't really shoot. Works in DX11 but would rather play DX9.. any tips?

Dennis, how are you getting your water to look like that?

{Edit} my water does, if it's not moving. Moving water looks kinda bad.

Man I really want a mod that just leaves the game at Daytime. That or remove that terrible rain transition. Game looks amazing during the day and so so at night IMO.

Nvidia Geforce 650M GT DDR5 and Far Cry 3 runs at 35 FPS, DX9

1280 x 720 resolution
Medium Settings

Is it possible to get more performance? I saw on NotebookCheck.net that most laptops with the same graphics are able to run it at 48 FPS on 1920x1080.

No AA too. I know I'm getting the short end of the stick since users with 560M are able to play this game much better than my laptop, even though my laptop is supposed to be more powerful in performance.

Help anyone, I know my laptop can play Far Cry 3 much better than what I'm playing with now.

Do you have AA on? Turn it off and set it 1920x1080 and see what you get.

if you don't.. then.. dunno.

This game is unbelievably awesome, but I have 2 complaints 1) the frame rate is kind of nauseating on 360, and 2) the weather changes happen too fast, it doesn't have the same impact as when a storm would hit in Far Cry 2. I may have to update my PC if next gen doesn't come soon.

Does everyone's FarCry 3 look like this? Something doesn't seem right with the shiny cement ceiling etc.

I changed the setting to Ultra with no change and also tried deleting the .XML so it would default everything.

Maybe thats just the way it is. (GTX 480 video)

Yes, dark areas look absolutely awful in this game.

I had this problem in that exact area, but weirdly enough most other caves have been fine. I have no idea what causes this.

So I tried launching the map editor and it crashed at the splash screen. It just keeps crashing at the splash screen. Anyone else have this problem?

yup have the same issue. infuriating to say the least

OK, so I settled back on a locked 30 fps. It works fairly well...but every so often I get these moments where the game starts sputtering resulting in a very jerky appearance. The framerate counter doesn't report a drop but it's definitely there.

If I stand still and spin the camera, it does not occur, but if I'm moving forward it will kick in at points and then quickly return to normal. I cannot figure this one out as it does not happen when I allow the game to run at 60 fps (that has other issues).

I ended up going for 30 fps too. My game is almost completely stutter free (I have the frames rendered ahead set to 3 in the config) but when it does stutter just hit escape, wait three seconds and then resume your game. Fixes stuttering every time for me.

I get the same issue. I've been playing at 2560x1440 downscaled to 1080p on my TV and my framerate never drops below 30, but I get that stuttering in some areas.

I also noticed that randomly I'll get a ton of input lag. Alt-tabbing out and then back in fixes it but I don't know what causes it.

So only major problem I'm having is random lockups of the game in water. It either hangs up completely or then just shows me the desktop with game being on the background, any suggestions? Always happens when I'm in water. And it's completely random when it happens.

If I decide to buy this game on PC, will it run like shit on the following specs?

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
3GB DDR2 RAM
HD 6850 1GB
1440 x 900 monitor
Windows Vista 32bit

I'm playing an Xbox rental copy right now and from maybe an hour the game actually seems pretty good but doesn't look or run so well. Feels like a PC game they downported to Xbox instead of the other way around like usual. I heard the PC version was badly optimized though, and I won't be able to upgrade until at least next spring.

Bump from my previous post, but I really can't get much performance from Nvidia 650M GT DDR5.

I had to lower resolution to 720p, medium settings, dx9 to maintain 35 FPS.

I really need help here. :(

Fuck looks like i will stay away from what seems like a buggy mess right now. I hate the stuttering in modern pc games.

There is stuttering for me at any framerate under 60 fps.

The only real smooth gameplay is with 60 fps. The game stutters at anything below. And I don't mean the usual roughness but actual stuttering.

Depending on the settings, I get some kind of strange, fuzzy, black hue around most objects in the game. Anyone know what that is?

Are you in Full Screen mode?

Have you enabled any AA?

Have you tried DX11?

I have everything on high with a pretty smooth framerate yet I'm noticing some significant pop-in. Is there a setting I should tweak to reduce this?

I have an i7-3770K, 16 Gigs of RAM and upgraded from a 560 Ti to a GTX 670 and the game still runs like shit.

And interestingly, when I activate HDAO with the 670, I have a dark layer on the lower third of the screen ... good work, Ubisoft

Gah, no matter what I fucking do with the custom lines in the xml, nothing sticks. For instance, I've got this :

<quality GameDepthOfField="0"
DepthDownsample="1"
CinematicDepthOfField="0"
FXAALevel="0"
CloudShadows="1"
MotionBlur="0"
id="medium" />

And it never works in game. I've tested numerous times, by changing the FXAA level and the game depth of field since those are visually apparent immediately and still nothing. I've got the file under read only too. Really wanna get rid of jaggies, and would to be honest, like to get SMAA working with the game. That in itself is a mission I have yet to accomplish.

Anyone having this same issue? :(

You must be overlooking a setting or 2, is there anything forced on in Nvidia control panel, Nvidia inspector etc? That setup should be able to run it great, what resolution?

The dark layer issue goes away if you quit / restart the game .. I had it happen as well while changing settings.

just got the game and im eager to jump in.

My specs:

i5-2500k
8 gig RAM
GTX 670

Any settings or config file changes I should be aware of prior to start playing ? I guess only postfx and shadows ?

Thanks

If I get this game and try to run it on my previously posted specs it can't possibly run worse than the console versions can it?
