DARK SOULS II Announced - [PC/PS3/360 - PR in OP]

I can't imagine them doing it any other way; one can hope, though, that they strive to make it even more interconnected, so that you don't wind up with areas like Tomb of the Giants that have only one entrance. All within reason, of course; I wouldn't want them to be connected just for the sake of being connected. The organic nature of the layout of Lordran was such a massive aspect of why it worked so well in the first place.

Hopefully they just leave out shit like Tomb of the Giants alltogether this time :)

Surprised they went with Dark Souls II rather than a new ____ Souls. Makes sense if it's a sequel though. Possible Demons Souls II in the future?

That'd be PS3 exclusive, so will never happen.

I haven't finished Dark Souls, it's too difficult and I end up playing it following a guide all the way. I know I should go back to it... but I know I'll die so much, lol. And yet, I'll probably buy DS2. I might buy it on PC this time. I'm pretty unhappy with consoles now.

Wait, does Sony make any money beyond FROM licensing PhyreEngine?

Yes Microsoft and Sony get a cut of every game sold on their system because of their licensing fees.

Its why Microsoft does not support PC gaming anymore. It would make them more money in the shot term, but they make significantly more money by increasing their console user base. Higher user base, the more money they make.

One of the reasons they can sell consoles at a loss.

Tomb of the Giants didn't really bother me. It just needed better interconnectivity and more enemy variety. (also, those dog skeletons were annoying)

Lost Izalith was by far the worst zone in the game. (or Blightown on consoles obviously because of the horrible framerate)

It is next gen compatible right?

If the rumors of both next gen consoles using x86 processors are true, then yes, absolutely. Even if they're not, Phyre is easy enough to port, since it runs on a good number of 360 games despite only natively supporting PC and PS3.

Reminds me of a behelit from berserk.

Hope sales aren't hurt because this is coming out during the tail end of this gen. Still so pumped, I want more detailssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

Jessica Alba needs to come with the game, damn. Game looks great as well, I hope that I don't kill critical NPCs by mistake again :(

I really, really hope they keep the sprawling interconnected world in the sequel. It was one of my favorite things about Dark Souls.
Yeah, there were at least 3 instances I can remember in which I was surprised (and impressed by) how things fit together.

It's amazing how quickly you can progress in a new game (even with an entirely new character) compared to your first playthrough.

My guess is the trailer music is just unique music developed for the game/trailer and not something I can find anywhere, right? I liked it.

Game journalism...

"Its like Skyrim with guns!"
"Its like skyrim with swords!"
"Its like skyrim with actual gameplay!"

Can these guys get any more ridiculous?

Would you say that Dark Souls II is..."Dark Souls-like"?

Some of the obscurities in Dark Souls were simply game design flaws, not at all part of the game's charm. Pretty much all of the RPG stuff - items, stats, spells, etc - is super vague and not well explained at all. Making all that more self explanatory can only help the game. I don't even care that much if they simplify them because Dark Souls is really about the levels and gameplay.

That said I hope this trailer is not evidence of pre-rendered cutscenes being used in the game itself because that would definitely detract from the atmosphere.

Shit, we have to figure all that out on our own, cuz no one records their knowledge and advice anywhere on the net!

For anyone who hasn't seen it, there's a Dark Souls 3D map viewer. It uses the collision data to show the entire world map and how it's all really connected.

You mean like nearly every boss introduction, the opening cinematic, the ending cinematic, Anor Londo's reveal, getting taken to Firelink...

Uh, other than the opening cinematic everything was in-engine and not pre-rendered.

edit: Oh wow the pre-rendered video files are stored as .wmv heh

This truly surprised me when they announced it. I mean I knew what it was when it started playing but the whole time I was damn happy. Just finishing up Dark Souls now and I cannot wait for more after it is so good.

Still haven't played the Dark Souls DLC, gotta get on that. In it's best moments it's truly a magnicficent game.

Kinda ran into a wall on my 2nd playthrough however, got really bored with some of the areas and some bosses were just annoying with the increased difficulty.

Need less Blighttown/ToG/Lost Izalith/Catacombs in DSII, more Sen's Fortress/Undead Burg/Darkroot Garden.

Also sidequests that are possible to complete without the constant use of a guide.
Also covenants that are possible to discover/complete without the constant use of a guide.
Also a crafting system that doesn't require reading a guide.

Yeah, a little bit of "streamlining" won't hurt Dark Souls. The fanbase for this series is among the craziest I've seen, hailing even the bad stuff as 'part of what makes it great'.
Can't judge much from a cg trailer and some cryptic comments from the directors, DSII might as well be more difficult and cumbersome to decode than DS.

Compared to Dark Souls, Dark Souls II will need a metric shit ton off accessibility added to it in order to bring it down to the hand holding simplicity of Skyrim. Besides, with the way that Namco marketed Dark Souls, they scared off many, many people by greatly over exaggerating its difficulty. So now they are getting the word out to those who love Skyrim that Dark 2 won't be too difficult, in an effort to expand the audience.

And if Dark Souls 2 is even half as good as Dark Souls, it will still be better than most other games. I don't know how so many people who claim to love Dark Souls are willing to give up on its sequel so soon.

That is absolutely true

Are they? This is from the PR:

FromSoftware is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.

Who's ready to give up on it? All we've seen is 1 cg trailer that looked great, what possible reason is there to give up on it when we've seen nothing other than a great trailer

Its basically the whole make it accessible to Skyrim players or CoD players that ruins everything. Why is Souls so loved? Its a breath of fresh air in this age of casual gaming. This franchise gets gimped in an effort to be like Skyrim and what does gaming have left? Nothing.

Dark Souls is its own thing and should never be compared to Skyrim. I hope the game has one and only difficulty, which is unrelenting but fair, presents a real thrill when exploring the environment like past Souls games have. As the long as the game has that, the game will be downright amazing.

The moment they 'become Skyrim' and introduce quest markets, quick travel, autosaves, easy-medium-hard, gaming will die for me.

I think people are conflating "more accessible" with "easier." You can make a game more accessible without making it easier, particularly by offering a more thorough explanation of the mechanics, for instance.

Reading the thread it does seem like some are ready to give up on the game simply due to the choice of a few words in the PR.

I agree that this is way premature, but it's happening.

Why is everybody LITERALLY making stuff up about From wanting to make the game more easy / accessible to the less hardcore crowd?

The director used the words "accessible" and "straightforward".

That's still a bad thing. Dark Souls was far better off by not explaining everything and letting the community discover on its own.

Which is one of the big goals of the series: mystery and people coming together to solve it that older games had by default due to lack of Gamefaqs, heavily instructualized "tutorials" in-game, etc. It is a very dangerous thing for this series to alude to.

Straightforward and accessible =! easy.

Also, believe it or not, there are people who REALLY like videogames but aren't part of "the community".

Lol quit it with the hyperbole. As if having a difficulty setting affects your enjoyment of the game at all. Just set it to hard and call it a day.

Most players here on GAF and other places ended up being glued to the wiki, so either way they're not doing much discovering on their own. Regardless, we have no idea what they're going to do. I think people should probably chill out.

That really was the beauty of the game. Not only in discovering the game mechanics, but even the story on your own is what made it so good. Discovery is a huge part of souls games.
