It would be good to combine the two ideas though.

Having something tangible in the world is better for immersion, but having a little light to show you the way is great too for the reasons you listed.

For the Zwei, it would be great if there was a piece of light, but you could see the fully rendered item on the ground. Taunts you into trying to acquire it from the skeleton army guarding it.

Yeah, I was mainly talking about weapons or maybe armor too. I remember seeing the Dragon Bone Smasher in Demon's Souls and wondering how the hell to get at that thing. That was the reason I read a wiki for Demon's Souls for the first time. It just looked so cool.

In Dark Souls you get most of the cool items through chests or by upgrading using boss souls. Pretty boring imo.

Rings or other smaller times should still be shown in a more obvious way, I don't want to go pixel hunting in every area for a small little 5 pixel ring in the corner.

Players who think Dark Souls is too hard and unforgiving are Adventure #2.

Don't be a #2 and the game is actually easy.
Wouldn't the darts be in his chest?

You know, this is applicable in so many places irl that I want to print it out and staple it to my door at work

I'm curious if this game does use the xbl back end again and they are being made simultaneously would 360/PC cross platform play be possible? Not being an FPs game PC players don't really gave an advantage and it will boost the population for both systems.

Possible, yes, but I think that MS has completely abandoned cross-play between the 360 and PC, so I wouldn't count on it.

What a damn shame. Could be the only reason to be excited over the game using GFWL. This is the perfect game for cross platform play as well. No voice chat, no mouse KB advantage. I doubt they will do it either but seems like a missed opportunity.

I could argue that in a game that is largely about a sense of mystery and the unknown, not knowing what the items are until you pick them up actually reinforces this theme and thereby enhances immersion instead of hurting it.

Would it be better if you could tell what an item was before you risk your safety to get it? Some people would probably appreciate having the chance to make informed decisions, but other people probably like the possibility of being trolled by some hard-to-get-but-not-so-great-item. So it could be interesting, but it's hard to predict overall how people would react.

^^that is awesome and true in a lot of cases. Surely not every death happens due to carelessness, but being careful almost always yields better progress.

Honestly the YOLO guys tend not to make it past the first bosses because they never realize the importance of block and try to brute force their way through every encounter.

My two cents towards the covenant discussion: I think Darkmoon's biggest failing is that indictments weren't available until after ringing the first bell, but most grief-invading happens in Undead Burg to players who don't have a chance at defending themselves.

If they're going to keep an invader-invading covenant, then indictments should be available from the very beginning or sin needs to be automatic. Otherwise the only people who get indicted are Forest Hunters.

This is completely accurate.

I went into the Catacombs area my first time playing, straight out of the Hollow prison. My character is a knight, fresh to the Souls series. I clawed my way through the caves, dying horribly and miserably, literally a corpse dragging itself along. A cartoon character getting killed and maimed in every way imaginable like Wild E. Coyote. A perpetual state of being kicked in the balls with an iron boot. I had to resort to luring skeletons off cliffs to fucking kill the bastards and even executing a ridiculous play-style I like to call a "naked run", were I un-equip all my heavy armor that encumbers me and make a made dash past enemies to go recover my green effluence, possibly even make it to a bonfire. As I run this naked marathon, I'm flogged by skeletons like a mock-Jesus roaming the streets in some Catholic ritual reenacting the crucifixion. I then start to wonder if I just suck or if this game is just fucking hard as they say it is. I then decide I should do some wiki-research and then stumble across many sources saying this area is a high-level area and to go to the Undead Burg first. God dammit.

This is soooo damn true and at the same time soooo Dark/Demon souls... This is exactly why I love them. Both games play (mostly) fair, virtually all deaths are going to be your fault... and that might be what makes them so infuriation to some.

I feel like this is an argument for keeping the game inaccessible and nebulous.

So much enjoyment I have derived from similar stories.

You didn't talk to the NPC near the fire, huh.

The Crestfallen Warrior at Firelink Shrine literally tells you exactly where to go and what to do at the beginning.

Sens Fortress is the level that makes you truly understand Dark Souls. I died soooo many times. It seemed impossible but you need to treat it like surgery moving slowly and methodically. Eventually I was able to make it through untouched but it took a lot of patience and learning.

Also was my favorite place to invade. Just watching players run around and waiting behind a corner to ambush them and ultimately crush their souls.

Exactly, they make it more accessible and I guarantee the game sucks. The first soul was amazing because everything was a mystery... the fun laid in trying to unravel it. If they change the game to please the masses it will just be another hollow game...

Yes. Speaking to each NPC you come across multiple times will give you plenty of information about how to progress. Both Andre and the Crestfallen warrior explain the importance of upgrading your gear for example. I just heard the Crestfallen guy talk about it in my most recent and like 10th playthrough, you really can keep coming back to him at certain points and hear new shit.

Sounds like you were having a blast.

I usually have terrible OCD when it comes to talking to everything and anything in RPGs. I told myself this time, "well I heard there's no real story so NPCs will probably banter with typical uninteresting lore, so screw that, time to go wreck some shit." Talking to that man would have probably saved me several hours.

This is what happened to me. Though I actually kept at it forever until I beat Pinwheel. As soon as I stepped into the Tomb of the Giants I realized something was up though. At least the mask of the father was a very nice reward for my troubles!

Wow, there is tons of story.. it just isn't forced down your throat. But it is there for those to look for it.

"There's no story" = "There are no twenty-minute cutscenes." There is a ton of story in Souls, it just is waiting for you to discover it.

Dark Souls is commonly misrepresented as an action RPG. Its correct classification is exploration game with action RPG elements.

I love how so many players who consider themselves better than others are always the ones that keep talking about using a shield.

Seriously am going to have to think of a name for that. For now I will just call them "shield hipsters" for a lack of anything better.

And evidently, the guy in the video didn't even know you could lock on to opponents...

Truthfully lock on is a good way to get yourself killed a lot of times. Since it tethers you to your opponent which screws up dodging a bit vs if you are actually free from that. Its mainly why I avoided using it at all if possible.

I feel you, i ventured in the graveyard too, the first time (though before entering the catacombs i actually tried going elsewhere, i didn't end up like you) but the npc right in front of the FirelinkShrine's bonfire, tells you to go upwards toward Undead Burg, if you speak with him a couple of times.

Beaten like your chosen undead in the catacombs.

That's why my main advice to everyone playing 'Souls is that they try to roleplay. Would you go wreck shit in that situation if you were a newbie warrior in a ruined world that very few people inhabit nowadays or would you try to chat and get some help and insight on the situation? :P

And I ALSO died to the skeletons, twice or so, before I realized that using different tactics and techniques didn't really mean much against them. Then I turned back and continued exploring the Undead Burg.

People who don't need shields or locking on don't post rage videos.

EpicNameBro delivers as always.

I'm really crazy with expectations, can't wait until EDGE comes out and freaksm e out some more

People who don't need shields or locking on don't post rage videos.

I remember getting pissed off in demons souls due to how the lock on worked. Its how I got killed while fighting the grey demon at the start of the game. I was pretty much about kill it, while moving I had clicked in R3 while dodging locking me onto him and when the huge sweep ing swing came the lock on screwed with my ability to dodge out of the way in terms of distance causing me to get hit. Which as all of you who played the game know kills you instantly pretty much.

Its due to how the camera worked it fucks with being able to dodge away from something. Its just enough of a difference to cause a fatal accident.

Wish they had the damned thing mapped somewhere else back in demons souls.

Yep that is what I was saying. Something like a separate tutorial option in the menu that holds your hand through the basic elements of the game and allows you to try them out as well. They can also try to explain the differences between certain weapons, like what some of the stats in the weapon descriptions are and how one sword and another may seem similar but have different movesets and can be used to adjust to your playstyle.

For example, I told my friend the Baldar Shield is super awesome, but he compared stats with the Knight Shield he was using and said he could not tell the difference. Stability being an important part of shields is something you may figure out as you play, but someone who just equips whatever may never figure that out and end up being extra frustrated at a part where he can't block attacks and not understand why.

I didn't even know this. :o

Yeah, they should definitely spend more time explaining the underlying mechanics before changing anything about the game play itself.

DSPgaming's Dark Souls Play-through is exactly why we don't have more games like Dark Souls. He spent like 6 videos on Asylum Demon complaining the game didn't explain anything and how it was "broken and unfair", he never learned from his mistakes. Anytime he died "Game is stupid, it's broken". At the end he finally said anyone who liked these types of games were idiots and masochists.

Everyone playing post patch how viable is light armor in PVP now? I know before it was pointless since heavy armor wearers could easily ninja flip negating the speed advantage of light armors which pretty much made it pointless.
