DARK SOULS II Announced - [PC/PS3/360 - PR in OP]

Does anyone else here want to see more life in Dark Souls 2? I want to see some inhabited towns and cities, I want to see some kind of life running around the ancient forests. I want to see fish in the rivers...


...and then watch as my subsequent actions and reactions reshape the world into the one we know from Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

I want to feel regret over killing some character NPC because his death means a town destroys itself before I even get the chance to set foot in it.

Second this. The second these games get tons of NPCs/towns it'll destroy its dreary atmosphere. Atmosphere is 90% of the reason why I love these games. No other games this generation come close to the level of atmosphere perfection Demons/Darks accomplishes.
 
I can't stop watching that trailer. And the more and more I do the more and more I'm convinced that the woman in the trailer is
the Firelink Shrine Firekeeper, Anastacia of Astora I think her name is. And the assassins are connected to Carim. Probably has to do with why Knight Lautrec Carim is hunting her in Dark Souls I.

Spoilered for the peeps who haven't played Dark Souls I.
 
I'm expecting humanity, hollowed and human form, and bonfires to come back. The feather in the trailer looked significant, perhaps that will be the equivalent of humanity or bonfires or maybe the darksign in this one. But yeah, I don't see them changing up as much stuff as they did from Demon's -> Dark Souls. I'm predicting this will pretty much have the same mechanics, maybe with some stuff changed to reflect the new story.

I wouldn't mind more NPCs to interact with because they're usually so well written, but I don't think I'd want something where I'm walking into a town full of people looking for the right person to talk to.

I always thought the Souls games were bold for having vast stretches of levels with no enemies or NPCs, just nothing.
 
Yeah, Dark Souls 2 sounds like shit. But it's fine, it's all for advertisement-purposes.

Yes because that's what makes it DARK Souls. Do you want collection quests too. Maybe a funny side kick.. You can walk around town as a burnt husk and buy swords from the weapons vendor and rent a room at the inn.

Maybe something other than NPC's standing in the same spot perhaps. They can keep all that dreary, foreboding atmosphere will some people in it.

Anyone, just some thoughts, I am hoping they push things a bit more with Dark Souls 2 and not just remake Demon's Souls again. I am sure many will be more than happy with that but I am hoping they bring something awesome to the table.

You mean those collection quests where you collect souls for people? We already do loads of them. And those pesky key collecting quests. Damn, game is chock full of them!

I am sure From can add many things to the game that does not change its fundamentals but at some point they cannot just remake the same game over and over. I am just throwing some random thoughts out. Not like they are getting made or anything lol.

My favorite part is the open/confined aspect of the world. Like the short cuts or back doors into areas. Watching the speed run and the guy starts in Firelink and goes straight thru valley of the drakes, into Darkroot and uses the bonfire in Undead Parish. No taurus demon, no bridge...awesome.
 
I can't wait for this sequel.

The more Souls action, the better. I just hope they take their sweet time making it as rich and deep as the last two games.

Nah, it's actually Forrest Gump's feather. The story is about a parallel universe where Forrest runs so fast he triggers a vacuum fluctuation and ends up in a dark fantasy universe, where he's a Undead. That's Jenny who gives him back the feather, and Lt. Dan provides support as a NPC phantom and screams "you'll never sink this boat" as his finishing war cry. But anyway, the story is very subtle and deep but the gist of it is a unknown force has claimed Momma's eternal soul and Forrest must take up a sword and shield to free her. The ping pong paddle is also a starting gift.

It's gonna be amazing! Estus Flasks are being replaced with Dr. Pepper swigs.

You mean those collection quests where you collect souls for people? We already do loads of them. And those pesky key collecting quests. Damn, game is chock full of them!

I am sure From can add many things to the game that does not change its fundamentals but at some point they cannot just remake the same game over and over. I am just throwing some random thoughts out. Not like they are getting made or anything lol.

I feel the things they need to fix are actually quite small in #, but somewhat challenging for them going into the third game for this franchise:

NO REPEAT BOSSES. Quit this shit. Make them all unique. If that means less bosses? Fine, but each should be quality work.

Stable frame-rate. If that means no blight town like areas, then so be it.

MAKE A GOOD ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both Demon's and Dark end horribly. It makes all the hard work feel pointless to me. Demon's also suffered from a joke of a final boss, which was remedied in Dark, but the ending options for Dark were still terrible and didn't feel epic in nature for the plot they had laid out and story that was told.

That's about the big major ones for me I feel they need to hit to get a game better than Demon's/Dark for me. I'd request one other minor thing and that'd be how armor/weapons are done for progression. You really only wear about 4 sets of armor the whole game depending on your build. I'd like to see more armor, and more time with what you find to use. I'd like it to wear a set of armor for 3ish hours, and then replace it, instead of what seems to be the wear this for a third of the game, another for this third, and then this for the last stretch.
 
The jump from the top of blighttown to the bottom is always impresses me.

I agree with you but to be honest Dark Souls for an RPG from Japan is one of the few RPGs i've played with almost no lame palette swaps.

Huh? Gwyn was a joke, False King was pretty rad...

I liked the endings, but they felt abrupt. I don't know really how to fix it, it's a 80 so hour game in which there are barely any cutscenes or dialogue. I think it'd probably be cool if you got to walk back to your last bonfire or something while having some conclusion music in the background and whatnot.

Agreed on the boss front. They make them so awesome looking but really boring in combat. They need to learn from Monster Hunter and have some more varied combat phases, especially if you co-op through them. Stuff like the Gaping Dragon looked utterly awesome but was pretty simple to beat. They could have done some weird stuff with it. :D

Key quests? Souls are currency. Plus the game has alot of dynamic stuff in it. If kill or don't kill certain NPCs you lose bonfires. There are multiple paths through the game and it does have quest lines in a way I guess, but its not straight up get me these 10 furs and I'll give you a neat sword. It has things like leave stuff in the crows nest or once certain requirements are met this NPC merchant will appear and sell you stuff. The changes from Demons to Dark were great. I just hope they don't look to other games for influence, I don't want this to become the next Ninja Gaiden III.

To be honest, when I returned to the Asylum and fought the Stray Demon, basically a super version of the Asylum Demon that you previously fought there, that was really cool, especially because he was foreshadowed earlier. When I got to the Demon Ruins and fought the Demon Firesage, another version of the Asylum Demon? That's one time too many, and because it wasn't a secret like the Stray Demon and very far removed from the Undead Asylum, I didn't care for it.

Yeah considering how close he is to the centipede boss it seems like he was added to guard the short cut. Should have borrowed another boss from Demons Souls. Like the fire Demon god he was a pain.

Neither are amazing. At least Gwyn had bad ass music, looked cool, and you could actually die to him. Demon's Souls final boss is a free whack a mole experiment. :/

Really? Man, I must have died to the False King 50 times. Gwyn was never so bad. Maybe it was my build and playing blindly. Unless you mean the 'event' last boss.

Perhaps he means the real final boss. You know, after you clear all four levels.

I loved False King Alant. He feels much more well balanced than Gwyn. I feel Artorias was Gwyn done right. It never occurred to me that you could parry Gwyn when I first fought him. He wrecked my shit more than any other boss in the game, possibly more than every other boss combined. He's just so unrelenting. I could never find an opening to heal.

Well, he's not really the last. The false king is.
I liked the atmosphere of the end game level:
the Old One crashing on the shore, the maiden speaking gently to it and you preparing to enter this huge beast, only to discover what happens to those who try to control the power of souls and fail miserably
. Really nicely done, almost poetic. And far better than what we got in DkS.

Really? Maybe I'm just bad but I could never beat the False King in NG+...

Anyways, I'm still watching that guy and he's skipping dungeons like it's nobody's business. The Blighttown dive is simply amazing, and he did it TWICE. MY GOD
 
Gwynn is weak as a last boss for lore reasons. And the music reflects this as well.

Perfect end boss for the lore, maybe a sub par boss for the gameplay.

He's talking about the "real" King Allant, which isn't really the "final" boss.

I love the combat in DS games. I love the premise of it. Stamina based. Possible to kill quickly with devastating hits. I love the concept.

But I don't enjoy pvp that much. Have mad respect for the people who are so good at it, and I'm glad so many people enjoy it... but I don't really enjoy it much myself. It's very... squirrely. I would like to see more options added to the defensive game than just roll/parry. Roll is cool I guess but I'd like to see some more types of dodges. Maybe some that keep you on your feet.

And I don't really like the lock on system. The really high level players don't even use it anyway... this is probably my most controversial opinion (and I totally understand why DS players probably would really dislike it) but I would like to see a change in the controls so the lock on isn't really necessary... strafing on the left stick and the camera is bound behind the player. (maybe something like Dead Space's hybrid camera... it acts like a FPS camera for the most part, but you can still break it free and rotate all the way around the character if you want) something that moves away from wildly rolling around type combat.

This would fundamentally change the game. I do not expect it to happen, or really care much if it doesn't (still adore the games) but if it was up to me, I'd bind the camera to the player and give them more options on defense.

Still, the stamina-based combat that exists is still pretty much the most enjoyable combat out there for me... so it's win win either way.

I mean shit if it has a health bar, and defeating it causes end credits to start to pump out, then I'm going to say its the final boss. I feel like saying the False King is the final boss is just cherry picking him to fit that role when he isn't the last thing you have to defeat to beat the game.

False King as a side note I think I got on my 3rd try.

Yeah at it's core, the lock-on system isn't too great. King's Field (spiritual predecessor) is first person, I kind of have the controls setup like that in the 4th one, though that game doesn't have any kind of dodging mechanic. You literally must strafe to dodge arrows and such, and sort of bob back and fourth to provoke enemies, dodge, then take the opportunity to hit them. The game is a lot more exploration focused than combat focused though.

Would be cool if they ever continued King's Field, even alongside the Souls series. I guess people might see them as being too similar though.

That said, I don't hate the idea, but I've never been super comfortable strafing and using general FPS controls with analogs.
 
Also... how about we get some weapon gestures? Certain weapon types could have gestures bound to them.

Have the balls to equip dual bandit knives? Reward me with a pimp taunt.

Eh? I consider the final boss to be the climactic end fight in a game, if the boss that proceeds it is there for story purposes only.

For example, I consider Sin to be the final boss of Final Fantasy X, not Yu Yevon.
