I doubt it would last that long even if they tried to be honest, maybe 20 years ago, but not these days, lol.

I'm honestly surprised they've kept us guessing this long.

I say they are going to continue to troll and throw out misinformation, so that when the real identity does come out, no one knows if it's BS or not.

No one will know his identity even after the movie is over.

I still see it as a zero percent chance of Cumberbatch being Khan Noonien Singh. This has never been a possibility, nor is it likely that he'll have even 50% of Khan's relationship dynamic with Kirk.

At most, he'll be a genetically-engineered megalomaniac who has given himself the title of "Khan," befitting his past rule of much of late 20th Century Earth. Beyond that, I don't see much substantive Wrath of Khan retreading.

Just read a brief synopsis of the 9 minute preview, and the only thing that's clear is that Abrams is successfully messing with us.

Late to this thread but... what an awful, awful teaser trailer.

Can writers and audiences simply no longer conceive of a serious threat or a dilemma that isn't posed by another corny mastermind villain? Wipe the Trek actors from that trailer and it could be any action movie.

I think it's interesting that we don't know the character yet, but I'm convinced it isn't Kahn either. When ever I see people speculating that it is Kahn and getting excited, I have to wonder why. Wraith of Kahn was fantastic back in the day, and it was the Star Trek movie that probably saved the franchise, but I don't want to see them telling that story again. Lets move on to something else. The re-boot was enough of a change, now lets see some original stories and adventures.

I do like the idea of characters from the original series showing up in the new franchise, but Kahn is almost too big and iconic to include here. It doesn't play well with the (admittedly altered) timeline either. Let that story be and move on with some other interesting things.

Seriously.... why so serious?

Part of the fun is having that over-the-top villain. I love that stuff. Star Trek has had some great mastermind villains. Some corny, some not, but all really fun to watch.

Khan doesn't work without the buildup between TOS and the movie. Everything that happened on Ceti Alpha V put him over the edge.

Even if it is him, it can only disappoint. I secretly want the weapon to be the Tantalus field but it doesn't explain super-strength.

I don't want Khan to have the same story as Star Trek 2. I want Khan because he's more realistic than Gary Mitchell's god powers, and because genetic engineering is a relevant topic for our era to start thinking about seriously. I want Khan because it could lead to the very Star Trek thing of having a philosophical discussion of genetic engineering and it's consequences, both positive and negative, and end up with a more cerebral film. So many of the TOS episodes were blatantly using sci-fi as a way to have a discussion of the social and political issues of the 1960s. I want this Star Trek to be more than just an action romp this time.

Humans have many disadvantages against the alien enemies they have. Romulans and Klingons are both physically stronger than humans. With genetic engineering the reverse could be true. Surely that is something humanity should consider in a galaxy with hostile Romulans and Klingons.

I'm totally ok with them *doing* Khan, for the record. I just don't think Benedict Cumberbatch is right for the role.

Because he isn't Indian? I recently rewatched The Wrath of Khan and Ricardo Montalbán barely looked non-white there, and the rest of his crew was white anyways. It's not a stretch for him to be 1/8 Indian or something, and they really don't have to explain that anyways.

Names don't guarantee ethnicity nowadays and surely won't in the future.

That's definitely part of it. I'd be ok with them doing a hispanic actor as well. There's not really a shortage of actors of either race they could use.

But no, I just genuinely don't think he's right for the role even race aside. And when they do Khan they have to do it *right*. Doing Khan is like touching a live-wire for this franchise's revival and that means they need the right actor, among other things that I don't really think are in place yet.

How do you know he won't be right? Everyone thought Heath Ledger would be wrong for The Joker reboot until they saw the movie. Now he's likely the most iconic version of The Joker.

That sometimes people are wrong doesn't appease my doubts. People are wrong about lots of things, that doesn't mean I shut down every critical part of my brain on everything. I just can't see it.

You keep saying this, but it's completely out of the question. This is not that kind of Star Trek. No matter who the villain is, it will be a big dumb adventure movie.

You need to temper your expectations.

With these writers, I know what I should expect :(

I still want more though.

I'm 99% sure it isn't Khan, but I'm also 100% sure that JJ Abrams will be fucking with us until the movie comes out. It's like Schrodinger's Villain, it has been definitely Khan and definitiely not Khan since the movie was announced.

Nobody was watching Enterprise by the time they got there. People all over the world will watch this movie.

People all over the world won't be watching this movie for a debate on eugenics. The very reason you want it to happen is the reason it won't.

It can't be Kahn cause Kahn never wore a Starfleet black uniform, right? That's all I got.

Unless this is the Joker-esque method of police disguise and letting yourself get caught:

I'm rewatching TWOK.

Why does Scotty take the dying kid to the bridge? Did he hit the wrong button in the turbo lift?

Its one of the few flaws in that movie. But they also cut out that it was his nephew If I'm not mistaken, so it explains that irrational moment a little more.

Maybe the villain in this movie is actually Scotty, come back from the future to exact revenge on Kirk for letting so many people in Engineering die over his tenure as Captain in the prime universe.

Yep. It's one of those scenes where they felt the need for a dramatic moment were more important than having it actually make sense. Still makes me laugh every time.

Scotty's little sidekick will be the major villain in the next movie. I'm calling it now. :P

I'm guessing Cumberbatch might be a different surviving crewman off the Botany Bay. In this reality maybe Kahn didn't survive and he did?

Maybe its the training commander of the Red Shirt group within future Star Fleet, come to avenge all of the redshirts that have died before him.

Or maybe Gary Mitchell in this universe went onto the Botany Bay and gets rescued by this Kirk.

Khan's spaceship is launched in 1996, and dude was at best in his 30's. that means he was born in the 60's. The writers on Space Seed really didn't think that through. Lol.

Also, if STID is indeed about Khan, they will obviously change the dates around. It would be extremely corny to say a race of supermen left Earth in cryogenic sleep 20 years ago.

That said, the alternate timeline shouldn't change the date of Khan's birth! It's canon shenanigans!

Star Trek's main timeline diverges from our own somewhere around 1960 or so. That's well established, actually.

Except when it doesn't. As in Star Trek 4, where Earth is just as it should be, minus the race of genetic supermen dictators that should have already been in charge for any of that stuff to make sense.

It doesn't matter, I just like to laugh at the weirdness of it all.

It's the beauty of near future scifi. Set your story in the near future, and everyone gets to have a laugh when the time comes.

Or just not mention when in the past it was launched. In Earth's past race of superman were launched into space in a cryogenic sleep due to lack of warp drive technology. Volia, simple as that. Just skim over the 1996 inconsistency. They can't outright change the date, the timeline didn't diverge till when Kirk was born. For example for the JJ Abrams Trek films the series Enterprise is 100% canon still.

I love even with the soft reboot by resetting the timeline in the 23rd century they still have some timeline baggage to deal with. Trek canon is a messy thing.
