Man of Steel - Official Trailer #2

Privacy (As if it's akin to avoiding the Paparazzi? And of Jonathan Kent, no less?) was never the point, and it goes to show that you have no clue what's being discussed here. Try weighing the death of children against having a potential savior of the world rendered impotent. How about weighing the death of children against the chaos around the world? Turmoil on a societal scale driven by the collective fears and uncertainty over what would probably be the most alien (figuratively and literally) event that humans have ever faced?

Of all the talks in fiction/comics about the potency of power, real power, there's arguably no character that's a better avatar of its potency and all the dilemmas that comes with it than Superman. The exercising of real power in the real world, even if you're operating with a general desire to do good, by the way, translates into the witnessing of imbalance, injustice, including not if how many innocents will die, and making the decision of not how to right wrongs, but which ones you'll right and which ones you learn to let go.

There's an opportunity for this movie to make Superman into the complex character he might not have originally been intended to be, but has become in culture over the years. Maybe this movie will go that far, maybe it won't; but I'll take an earnest effort over some cheap feelgood good vs. evil schlock anyday.
What's the point man. He's not going to get it.

*Yawn* "Wow, this movie is so realistic, allow me to justify it using completely unrealistic circumstances." Can't let them figure out my bus lifting son's identity because a) he might be rendered impotent somehow (pretty confused on that one) or b) It'll cause mass turmoil... somehow. If there's anything you could compare Superman to on a societal level it would be nukes. Here's the kicker though, there's only one Super Man and he seems to enjoy saving people's lives. Maybe if he was attempting to become king of the planet I could see the dilemma, but apparently by just existing he risks setting the whole world on fire BUT ONLY if people know what his true identity is. Next.

Dark lighting and sappy music equals an earnest effort. Gotcha.

There's turmoil over something as simple as a complete fabricated sound byte taking place all over the world everyday. If, there's anything you could compare Superman to? Well, there's...nothing, which is kind of the point. There's no gradual revelations of new technology or emerging events, there's no precedence for some kind of super-powered alien at all. The realities of wielding power is well known, but something like an alien is not. Someone like Jonathan Kent wouldn't know where Clark's power's begin and end, and no one knows how the world would react. It's uncertainty and doubt that's often the driver of dilemmas associated with the human condition in the first place. Examining said dilemmas in the context of characters real or fabricated is called, you know, storytelling.

Lighting and sappy music does indeed present a different presentation and could signal an earnest effort of presenting the complexities of the character in ways typically not done before; which, if you knew how to read, was something I already said this may or may not be.

Takes my mind off of work and keeps me entertained for a bit.

Wow, some of those composite/CG shots look rough.

I dunno, I'd love to enjoy another Superman movie but this just looks so damn self-serious. As soon as we see the cape I'm just like... this doesn't fit the tone they're establishing at all.

Inject Superman 3 & 4 into your veins and this trailer will look a million times better. I'm not kidding.

I genuinely love 1 and 2, and I wanted to like Returns. I just don't think the character lends himself well to this (at least from what we see in the trailer) specific tone and gravity of storytelling. I'm definitely not saying you can't tell a dark or sad or meaningful or complex Superman tale, but I think this looks a little too sombre.

Really? There are arguments over this trailer, nevermind the "maybe" line?

You could ostensibly accuse this trailer of being too cheesy or pompous, in which case it's an opinion call, no more no less. Final product might suck like Returns? Completely reasonable concern. However, the idea that the Superman mythos should always be represented as a whiz-bang action flick or that Daddy Kent is somehow immoral for agonizing over the possibility that people may need to not be saved to protect Clark's identity is so ridiculous as to boggle the mind. Are people somehow not aware of the fact that Superman, beyond all of his powers and colorful comic history, is at its heart a representation of the American, and arguably the human, zeitgeist? And that it's been used as a representation of everything from the aspiration of mankind to the journey of immigrants to quintessential strength of American power/individuality? How in the world is making the film like another Avengers doing justice to what is arguably THE archetypical superhero? And how the hell do you not see the humanity in a simple farmer agonizing over the responsibility to teach and protect what is the most incredible singular source power the world has ever known, taken shape as his own son, even at the potential risk of others' lives?

Goddamn people, I swear some of you do not bother to look one inch deeper past the surface.

Bra-fucking-vo.

Clearly you will be the one with egg on your face when it turns out that Pa Kent is the secret Super villain of the film.

Yeah I'll take billionaire genius playboy and MERELY world-class athleticism/dexterity and/or a super robot suit, thanks.

Yeah but that would be like the earnestest shit ever.

How would anyone know if he's an alien? He could be a human from the future for all they know. How would SuperMan himself even know?

Someone like Jonathan Kent wouldn't know where Clark's power's begin and end, and no one knows how the world would react.

You and Johnathan seem to think that it would cause a bunch of people to die due to all the "chaos" it would cause. Which of course has no logical precedent whatsoever.

It's uncertainty and doubt that's often the driver of dilemmas associated with the human condition in the first place. Examining said dilemmas in the context of characters real or fabricated is called, you know, storytelling.

No wonder you're a fan of this trailer, your writing is as hollow as Nolan's.

Lighting and sappy music does indeed present a different presentation and could signal an earnest effort of presenting the complexities of the character in ways typically not done before; which, if you knew how to read, was something I already said this may or may not be.

Ouch bro, u mad?

You and Johnathan seem to think that it would cause a bunch of people to die due to all the "chaos" it would cause. Which of course has no logical precedent whatsoever.

It's really a lot simpler than that. Clark is a 13 (or so) year old boy. He is the only son the Kents (who, if in keeping with the comics, are unable to have children) will ever know. Clearly there is something special and out of the ordinary about their son. He has abilities that can help and save people, but also ones that can get unwanted attention. I'm sure Pa Kent's thought process also includes not wanting to see a bunch of shady G-men busting down his front door in the middle of the night, snatching his son and taking him away, never to be seen again. Is it selfish? Possibly. But it seems like a natural paternal instinct.

And lack of knowledge and/or information would do...what? Do you know anything of basic human psychology or behavioral science? And yes, no one ever dies or gets injured nor do other bad things happen when masses of people react out of fear; never happened, no precedence whatsoever.

And my writing is nothing special, but for you of all people to call it hollow? You know the word is "shallow", right? I'm not so much mad as I am beginning to wonder if you're in the possession of a high school diploma.

People seem to be missing the other angle, the idea that the world might need to be protected from Clark's powers. If he starts using that shit then you open up a huge can of worms. That's why Pa Kent says Clark has to decide what kind of man he wants to be, and in the comic con footage he specifically says "good character or bad". Things on Earth are simpler and possibly safer without introducing super powered aliens into the mix. It's not outlandish to think that Clark just living life as a normal person, even if it means sitting back and watching people die, might be the best thing for the world.

I still find the complete 180 some people have done on this film remarkable. I remember when Snyder was first announced there was so much vitriol and hate. A rare few people had faith in the film.

Nolan as producer, maybe?

Real talk: The Batman trilogy is over. This movie needs to do well.

This was known pretty is very well. In fact, I remember having discussions with folks about Nolan being responsible for the story and, even then, some weren't too optimistic.

I liked the trailer. It seems to me that Clark/Supes is gonna be hopeful about this world he's in while the "doom and gloom" might be coming from Pa Kent/other people.

That never happened.

If they're doing a GL ever again, in JL or otherwise, it will most likely now be Jon Stewart. A good GL with a different look altogether would be the only thing that could save the character.

Man, I feel like Reynolds got shafted. If he had a better script... he's capable of a lot more, I think. I honestly wanna see a GL sequel with Reynolds and Mark Strong. Better script and direction (plus a physical suit), I can see something really good.

But maybe this means Elba can be Green Lantern!

Would be amazing.

The script sucked, but Reynolds is completely forgettable. If they want to make GL a really memorable and potentially big character, they need to cast someone better. If they just want to make him a side character, there are a dozen guys in Hollywood they can cast that can do what RR did without the baggage of being attached to that shit movie. It'd be like casting George Clooney as Batman.

Elba is obviously the GAF favorite, but if they wanted to go with a young actor for GL, Chadwick Boseman from the upcoming Jackie Robinson bioflick has a good look I think. Reminds me of a young Chiwetel Ejiofor. Probably not old enough to pull of John Stewart though.

There were so many problems with Green Lantern... it was pretty impressive how they managed to fuck up just about everything. What the fuck happened, Campbell?

I remember when the GL trailer was playing in the theatre in front of one of the movies we were watching, and the audience just laughing at the trailer.

Maybe he had a breakdown.

Weird thing is, you can kinda see good ideas there... you know, behind the layers of badness. Having said that, I actually enjoyed the movie the first time I watched it... but I never went back to it.

But man, having a deformed big head guy and a big cloud as your villain was a mistaaaaaaaaaaake.

I'm just saying, I think Reynolds could do better. Plus, Mark Strong is always fucking awesome. Even though the jump to the yellow ring was hilariously bizarre.

Man, looking back, there's a lot of cringe-worthy stuff in that movie. I did however love that bit where Reynolds has the domino mask and Blake Lively just sees right through it, cause... fucking domino masks are retarded. The suit in general looked... not good. Also pretty sure Hal killed like three dudes after he got them fired in that movie.

Yeah but that would be the role to actually get Elba into film proper if done well.

He's already doing Pacific Rim and is playing a lead role there. Del Toro apparently hired him for this exact reason you mentioned. Giant Robot blockbuster is about as big as it gets.
