Are you basing your opinion that the books are "dreck" on having read the books or on the mere fact that their existence offends you in some way? I'm not reading them myself, but some people at my LCS whose opinions I respect are buying them and have said that some of the Before Watchmen titles are actually quite good.

I don't need to read JMS or Len Wein or Lee Bermejo comics or Azzarello's grimdark hackwork to know they're dreck.

I like some of his covers (esp. for DD) but the guy's interiors are like the textbook definition of gaudy. Have you seen his stuff on Rorschach? ughhh

I haven't read it, but is Uncanny Avengers that bad? Acuna is coming in March, makes me want to read.

I don't know if I would call it bad, really. I just think it's taking a little bit to really pick up. The delays probably do have something to do with that.

Anyway, I have not read Ironman 3 or 4 yet, but I am kinda considering dropping it. See, I like Gillen, I really do...but I dunno. This story hasn't really been doing anything for me yet.

If you guys ever have codes for comics you don't need, please hawler at a player!

But aside from that, uncanny xforce was the title that got me back into comics. Why a great book. I'm gonna jump in New X Men and FF as well.

Okay....I'm at a used book store and they have copies of Savage Dragon #1 for less than a buck. I thought it might be a reissue but on the inside cover it says first printing. I still don't feel like it's true though.

C&XF would probably be all right if it wasn't hideous / D'armata wasn't on it! That cat is the Greg Land of colouring.

So I read Fantastic Four 2, borrowed it from a friend, it's not bad. That said the obsession with Yancy Street is annoying. I get it, Ben's from Yancy Street I didn't need to be reminded again. Can we go an issue without Ben complaining about Yancy Street? I miss Hickman.... ;-;

all i had for pick up

Walking Dead
Ultimate X-Men

so whats the verdict on Cable an X-Force? should i add Cable and remove The Ultimates before they start a new story arc?

Cable is building a team for an unkown reason. they are being hunted by the Avengers.

By unknown reason, they mean even the people on the team are not absolutely sure what it is Cable is intending to do. They show up because he "asks" something of them (He "asks" Dr. Nemesis for help while holding him at gun point) and then apparently something happens to brand all those involved as terrorists and now they are kinda stuck. None of them are happy to be there.

Not sure yet. Cable is building a team again. It seems to be the main book where Hope's story will play out.

Hopeless is writing Hope. Heh.

you should have punched them in the mouth

I know people like that...we don't talk much.

I wanted to, sadly it was during a Skype group call for a very small geek podcast I do with my friends. If you guys are interested I'll link it to you, we're not really professional by any standards but we just do it for fun.

I just didn't know what to say other than are you serious. Like it baffles my mind.

And this same person said he never watched any of the Lord of the Rings movies because he has no interest in magic and elves. Don't even think you can call yourself a geek after that.

Well, I know one person whose opinions I can safely ignore. I respect the opinions of those who actually read the material as opposed to those who make blanket judgments without even reading anything.

Since they are all hacks who produce dreck, I assume you've never liked anything by JMS (Thor) or Azzarello (100 Bullets)? Have you even read much Len Wein since most of his writing was in the early 70s? Why didn't you call out Darwyn Cooke since he's presumably a hack too?

Before Watchmen, blanketly, is unnecessary dreck. Anyone who's read even a sentence of my posts or published criticism knows my feelings on the works of Cooke and Azzarello. Doesn't change the fact that Before Watchmen is a graveyard that sucks in good creative and spits out dreck. Has nothing to do with anyone being a hack and I'm offended by the implication on Cooke and Azzarello's behalf.

Before Watchmen isn't worthy of all that scorn. You said it yourself, it's mostly unnecessary, and therefore pretty inoffensive. Hating on it on the sole basis of its existence is at best pointless and at worst so very disingenuous.

I suppose I hate it as much as Rich Johnston. Not enough to expend much energy but consistently happy I don't have it/he in my face on a weekly basis.

Azzarello and Cooke are putting out the only worthwhile Before Watchmen books anyway. Len Wein's is bad, and JMS is just talking to himself as usual.

Oh man really what didn't you like about them i thought they were great

Pretty vacant IMO. Gorgeous visuals, but horrendous mischaracterization, especially in the case of AA's hopeless usage of the two Academy kids. It's just more using established charas as props to make them fit the story, instead of the other correct way around. That said, I'm not going to harp on it constantly like some do about other comics. It's just not for me.

Totally agree. Cooke especially made the whole concept worth doing. I dropped the others fairly quickly.

Oh, I never read that book.

Then your take makes way more sense. It's sort of like how I feel about people who love TWD show, and they've never read the books. I sort of envy them. I'd rather not know how poorly they've gotten the show in comparison to the tone of the book.

Edit - more importantly think about grabbing it when it's on sale. He really did a good job making the kids likable.

Avengers Arena was great in a "holy shit this is going to be dumb and amazing" kind of way. Sign me up! Wanton murder for all!

Cable and X-Force was ooooooookay I guess. It didn't blow me away. I skipped most of the Cable/Hope run so their daddy/daughter stuff is whatevers for me, but I've always liked teen Hope (yeah, I'm the one) and there are other parts of the book I like so it could be worth keeping up with.

Batman 15, Ok I still really like this arc compared to the snoozer that was the Owls but somebody for the love of god please explain to me why Batman's gloves were inexplicably gone when he punched Joker? No explanation whatsoever, they just magically disappear. This is really bothering me and keeping me from liking the issue and all comics ever made, quite frankly. All comics are officially on notice until I solve the Mystery of Batman's Gloves.

As weak as Len Wein's prose is, and good fucking god his prose is so fucking weak it's barely able to stand up, Jae Lee is doing the most wonderful stuff. It's so well constructed I really don't mind Wein going for the easiest, most obvious route. And while JMS blows big fat chunks of terrible on Nite Owl, his Manhattan is pretty neat, pretty much side-stepping the idea of a Watchmen prequel and fucking around with storytelling, helped by Adam flipping Hughes.

No doubt I will. I'm like all over these digital sales these days.
