Reports are that he used two handguns, so my point is mostly moot. Though I know it is very easy to convert them, still not legal.

Gun ownership will never disappear from America. If an individual was able to do this with hand guns, then the protocol for such situations is broken. I thought police were stationed at every public school at this point? Was this not the case here?

News to me if true. Still I don't know what that could have prevented if the gunman truly was a parent.

I woke up and this was the first thing i saw was at least 20 dead at an elementary school.

Terrible way to start the day.

My prayers go out to those families who lost children and loved ones.

Jesus Christ. I can't imagine being a parent of a child lost in this terrible tragedy. Right before Christmas especially, presents still under the tree. My eyes are watery right now.

I feel sick. It's bad enough when it's a high school or mostly adults at a movie theater. These are kindergarten students and their teachers. This is just completely senseless. These kids have absolutely no concept of why someone would even do something like that.

My heart goes out to all the children and their families. This country's social fabric is falling apart at the seams at an alarming rate.

I think the last thing on their minds, is the money they spent on gifts.

I don't think he meant anything about the money. But those gifts under the tree or not yet wrapped will be a horrific reminder of what would have been a cheery Christmas morning spent with their delighted kids.

"Thankfully"? No, that's yet another horrible thing. People who do stuff like this need to be studied. Gun law reform will be vastly more effective if we can learn all we can about the people who perpetrate these crimes and identify early warning signs that allow authorities to keep them from legally owning guns in the first place. Will they still be able to get illegal guns? In many cases, yes, but that doesn't mean it's not worth putting that one extra obstacle between them and something like what happened today.

I actually agree with you, and that was tactless of me to say. Just a bit caught up with the announcement thirty seconds prior that he'd not killed just one person, but 27 people, many of which were children. I've actually been browsing some interesting journal studies on gun crime and methods/effects of control over the last two hours since this was posted on GAF.

I don't think he was referring to the money as much as the fact that the children won't get to experience the joy of Christmas anymore.

I hope so. It kinda came off as that.

Sorry if that wasn't what you were getting at!

Fuck. I haven't been online all morning and my dad called me to let me know what happened. 2 of my exes live in Newtwon/Sandy Hook. God dammit. Shooting kids?

My heart goes out to all those affected :(

The only police at my county's public schools are at the high schools and even then it's the ones in the more crime-prone locales.

Fuck this. My son is in the second grade and my wife is a kindergarten teacher. We need some stricter gun laws. The NRA and gun enthusiasts need to stfu and deal with it.

If this conversation doesn't begin in earnest after this, I just... I don't even fucking know.

No, no, no. That was in ancient times, when open bolt designs were still allowed. Nowadays modifying a semiauto weapon to fire in full auto requires some serious gunsmithing and special components (either ilegally purchased or machined from zero).

What you are describing is a rather unusual malfunction that makes those weapons completely uncontrollable as you can't stop the firing cycle (so basically they fire until they run empty). I've experienced that with some competition pistols. That's not how full auto works and it's actually dangerous for the shooter.

In any case, we are talking about a school shooting, not a warfare situation that requires suppressive fire or anything like that. You could cause the same amount of mayhem with a semiauto, maybe even a pistol. Those were just kids in a confined space.

Killed by the police or by his own hand, it's a damn shame the shooter took the easy way.

Well the gun I was shooting was an old SKS and it would just keep firing when the trigger was held. Must have been a malfunction I guess. You sound more knowledgeable than me. Anyways. Sorry for the derail. Probably not the thread for this.

How many people have to die before we make serious gun law changes? Every time something like this happens people get angry and mad and politicians say its a tragedy that shouldn't happen again but seemingly nothing is ever done.

It's a hard problem to fix, man. When we see a school bus of people killed because of a drunk driver, we all agree it's a tragedy...but what is the realistic recourse to prevent it in the future, you know? Can't ban alcohol, and driving while drunk is already illegal. People will, in the end, do what they want to do.

Until we know more, the reality is that this guy could have been a law-abiding citizen until today when he fucking snapped. Existing gun laws delay the purchase firearms, try to filter out people with a history of mental illness, and prevent felons from buying. If you don't fit one of those categories and can wait a few days, you can buy a gun. Even still, if people want them and have bad intentions, they will break every law to get what they want...just like the drinker that wants to get behind a wheel.

I just don't know what the solution is other than better enforcement of the laws currently on the books. All it takes is one psychopath, whether this guy or Anders Brevik who killed 77 people last year in Norway and millions upon millions of responsible gun owners who've never hurt a fly (like me) are indicted and potentially punished.

Let us reserve some judgement on the system until we find out more about this shooter. If his gun(s) were obtained legally, etc.

whatddafuck

It's not Christmas without something shitty happening. Find it hard to fathom how fucked up you'd have to be to target fucking kids.

I really REALLY hope a lot of the "end of the world" crazies don't start doing this shit leading up to the end of the month.
