The motherfucker used this gun:

How is this legal?

Coward.

It's a semi-automatic. in other words, just a glorified, physically larger (and thus intimidating), more accurate (from distance, hence its popularity for hunting) pistol. higher-speed bullets, though:

.223 far right.

"The projectiles of the .222 and .223 calibers are of practically the same size as the projectile used in the little .22 rimfire bullet used for hunting rabbits and squirrels. The only way they are able to do significant damage to an enemy soldier or criminal assailant is that the bullet is pointed and is given enough speed to pass entirely through the body."

It's a small round in a big case that travels fast.

Given reports that he was physically close/execution range of the kids, we would have seen a lot more casualties if he had been wielding a couple of high-mag 9mm or .45cal pistols. Those bullets are bigger and do more damage.

Why is abc news saying their is a manhunt for a second suspect? Yet the briefing just said there is nothing

Someone was arrested outside the school, shortly after the shooting. He kept telling everyone "It wasn't me. It wasn't me." Handcuffed, in custody, not officially a suspect. Just a person of interest. Nothing really more to say about that, they'll grill him until they are 100% sure he has no connection.

that's what always scared me when I was elementary school. They always said in case of emergency we would all be locked down in our classrooms but then I never understood that because then the person shooting the school up could go from class to class where everyone is just waiting. Easy pickings.

There's gotta be another way.

Sadly, there have been instances of shooters opening fire on the kids as they evacuate the building - allows them to fire into a large group of people and maximize the casualties. Holing the kids up in the classrooms is probably the best strategy I can think of, though I'm not sure if the doors lock.

Aurora, The mall shooting a couple days ago, and now this one all involved a .223 caliber gun -- basically an AR-15 style gun which is the civilian style of the M16.

This is insane, no words. My condolences to all involved.

A while back a crazy man killed and injured a whole bunch of kids at a daycare centre in Belgium, with a knive. So even with strict gunlaws tragedy can happen..
I honestly don´t understand why these people would go after innocent little children. This is just awful.

Jeez. When I went out for sandwiches about 90 minutes ago, the news was saying that the shooter was dead and there were a couple of people in the hospital. Now I'm back home and they're saying something like 20 children have been executed. Such a sad situation. My condolences to all those involved.

He probably didn't know any of that and just used what he thought looked cool/would put fear in people.

Has it been confirmed that there were two shooters?

Nope. Just that a "second person" is in custody.

Do we know it's this exact make and model .223 rifle? It just looks like someone google image searched '.223 cal rifle' and picked the scariest looking one.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. You wouldn't use a 10x+ glass, bipod, foregrip, 20" barrel and a 20? round mag for close-in shooting.

I see guns as defensive weapons, banning the 2nd amendment is a catch 22 imo.

nah, fuck that shit, modify the 2nd amendment already. This is getting utterly fucking out of control. Seriously, 28+ people dead? 18 of them children? outlandish guncrimes in the cities? Why?

Civilian use of guns need to end. Only allow it for hunting or some other recreational shit.

Nope. There is literally nothing he can do, and I'm surprised no one can admit this. He has done nothing about guns yet the NRA has incited their base to levels unseen before. This issue cannot even be discussed sanely on a national scale without a certain news network playing the role of NRA propaganda piece, and there aren't any republican votes in the house willing to work with the president on this; I'm sure there are republicans who would want to, but their base would eat them alive.

If there is going to be change it has to happen at the state level. The black president "taking yer guns away" meme is too strong. Something has to be done about access to certain ammunition clips, and gun licenses.

he gets supreme court justice nominations. Ginsburg is 80, Scalia and Kennedy are 76.

Reading this is both saddening and frightening.

And tomorrow and for the rest of eternity, everyone knows the fuckers name. Which is probably exactly why he went and did this.

Maybe the first step should be never revealing the identity of the killer. Just collectively as a people agree to never ever talk about the shooter. No fame, no "gain".

Put the body in a helicopter and drop it in the sea somewhere like Osama.

Too bad that won't ever work thanks to the internet and word-to-mouth being a worldwide affair now instead of local.

Totally agree.

These sick fucks probably just want to go out in some blaze of "glory" and be remembered for whatever sick things they do. And the media will inevitably facilitate that by having his image plastered everywhere. I think these people want attention, even if they're dead when they get it. Don't give them that.

Jesus fuckin christ :o

Reading these news report is sending chills down my spine. I have a 6 m/o little girl and just imaginning something happening to her slmost makes me sick. I can't even begin to imagine what the parents of these kids can feel. Absolutely horrible. :(

Is the reports of kids being shot execution style true? I.... I just can't believe someone would be that fucked up.

I wouldn't put much stock in it. I hear that phrase thrown around a lot. It can mean different things to different people. It's just a way to sensationalize a story that doesn't need any additional drama.

I know there will be another push for an assault weapons ban. I think a handgun ban would have larger impact though.

Assault weapons are hardly used in day to day murder, they're getting a high profile lately though due to what is it 3? mass shootings in the past year and a half involving ar-15s. Long rifles are the least likely weapons to be used to kill in a civilian environment. Banning assault weapons won't do much and won't impact violence.

Any semi auto hunting rifle could have done the same. That's the only reason I don't think it's good to discuss and enact gun policy, people aren't thinking straight and thinking about the best way to spend political capital to enact legislation that's gained from a tragedy
