wow. i didn't know this happened until i was in another thread and it was alluded to.
wow. what kind of coward rages against an elementary school.

I saw the first report earlier but they were acting like there may not have even been any injuries. Then breaking news of dead and injured popped up on my phone ant it stopped me in my tracks and sent a chill down my spine. I literally misted up as I was eating in the food court at our local mall. Pure evil, that's all I can think of. I can't imagine what those people are going through now.

How in the world did he even make it inside the school in the first place with that kind of weapon and wearing that sort of thing? I live in SC and even the schools here now have armed security officers and the doors are always on lockdown and you must be buzzed in to even enter the building.

This just gets worse and worse. On one hand, I feel no remorse that the shooter is dead, but it's a shame he'll never get to be questioned. For there to also be a body at another house, something went down.

One of the kids I saw interviewed didnt seem bothered at all. Clearly didn't witness the gunmen himself or see schoolmates getting shot.

Is there more interviews with actual first-hand victims?

Just saw one with a little kid who couldn't have been older than six explain in a shaky voice that one of the first grade teachers had been killed.

WTF reporters, leave the fucking kids alone.

Do we really need the thread title change to include the numbers?

Also fuck CNN and whoever else for interviewing kids and fuck CBS and whoever else for tapping and airing that chick bawling on the phone, do they really think it is OK to just exploit someone like that? People at home don't need to see that, however touching or tragic they feel it is.

I have very little respect for anyone in the news media, but this just takes the cake and they should time and again with these kinds of incidents that they really just don't give a fuck and are doing their utmost to get viewers and nothing else.

In several countries there was a gentlemen agreement, not to include news of suicides involving trains or subways and they dropped significantly.

But the media is happy to make him famous, how else to fill 24 hour news cycle.

yeah their coverage can definitely help encourage more shootings goings forwards. there's a good video from the uk news criticism show called newswipe about it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PezlFNTGWv4

Well they said he was heard arguing with the principal of the school before he killed her and started the rampage.

That's the weird thing. At first I thought troubled kid whose dad got called in to talk to counselor and principal, got pissed and targeted them and just started killing. If he's 20 though, it is unlikely he has a kid old enough to. Go to the school. Not impossible, just not likely. So it was probably just some evil fucked up guy and he targeted the most vulnerable thing he could think of.... Kindergartners.

Its days like this I really worry about having kids of my own.

Such a sad story, why the fuck would you do this to kids?

Horrible. Just horrible.

I can't even imagine what the kids who survived this went through, not to mention the victims themselves.

If there's one thing I wish could happen (aside from this killing spree never happening) it would be that we don't make the killer(s) into household names through our media coverage, since that's probably what they wanted. But I guess it's inevitable.

Sickening, sickening event. Ugh.

Times like this is not for discussing politics. The country and world has to be united in condemning and mourning IMO. Politicizing this is a huge slap in the face to the family of the victims.
How is taking action to prevent future massacres a slap in the face? The slap in the face is seeing this happen over and over again while doing nothing but mourning for a few days. The country and world need to be unified in attempting to stop future travesties like this. The parents don't need you to mourn their child, they need things like this to stop happening, and that requires us to discuss policy and take action.

I really can't even begin to comprehend what it's like to be involved in a scenario like this. Like someone else mentioned, this all feels very surreal. I feel terrible about it, but there's really not a whole lot I feel I can say, as I know I don't (and hopefully won't ever) understand how the victims and their families felt/feel. My mother contacted our family up in Waterbury and she tells me that everyone's fine. I figured they would be, but it's still nice to hear. If anyone on here has friends or family in the area, I hope you're as lucky as me.

I feel so sick, mad, and very sad for all victims.

I say quit worrying about the gun laws so much, let's get some mental health initiatives going. Make outpatient care widely available, educate people on the symptoms, and educate law enforcement, EMS workers, community workers, etc some more.

This person could have used a bomb or arson.

Any big changes in the gun law will be a very big political fight. I might think its necessary, you might think its necessary, but do enough people feel it is necessary?

Plenty of them would point out examples from history where people turned in their guns and were later slaughtered by the millions. The red scare is very big here.

It's ridiculous.

All this talk about Freedoms, is it understood how many freedoms are given up to allow this?

I'm trying to catch up with all the details here.... Did the shooter kill himself or did police take him down?

I was thinking the same. The last .223 I used was a pretty plain jane bolt action, so seeing this version of it is kind of shocking.
AR-15 uses a .223 and its basically a civilian version of an M-16 or M-4. Like the other poster said, it looks like they just posted the scariest looking gun they could find. I know the weapon itself doesn't really matter. It's just the sensationalism that bothers me. This is tragic enough without the hyperbole.

ABC news reports
Shooter was 24.
Wore body armor.
Had 4 guns.
Deceased.

Why FUCK would they fucking interview the kids!? Fuck them.

They interviewed the kids very early into this, and are using that footage. Remember, when this first started, they thought it was just the suspect, principal and school psychiatrist dead. There are 600+ kids at the school, most of the them didn't seem to know what was going on beyond seeing SWAT and hearing them on the roof. I've yet to see an interview with a crying child or anything like that, the ones they've talked to seem fine.

Not saying it's the best practice, but the tone of this has changed considerably since it first started. Also, every interview I've seen was with the parent(s) on camera as well, willingly allowing. Don't really see the issue if everyone involved is okay with it, they'd interview them later anyway. Now if a kid saw a gun or was chased around, of course not.

.......

.....

..................

yea, that's standard among rifle rounds. That's why they're so big and long (again, see last image I posted). that extra length is just more gun powder to make the bullets fly faster. It's the only purpose for the increased size. They're so powerful because in theory, the bullets are shot at long range targets. Again, think deer hunting. The bullet is made to be accurate up to and beyond 500 meters.

look at this velocity:

Compare to a typical 45 caliber bullet:

2x-3x the travel speed and twice the joules of energy. but that's why one is used in hunting and the other for regular pistols.

So yea, if you shoot a rifle round of any type point blank at something (like concrete), it's probably going to travel through it...though it'd probably have to be some pretty brittle concrete.

Why do people drive extremely fast cars? It's one of the most fun weapons to shoot or own.

I hate this argument. You never hear about a guy driving his Porsche and running over 15 or more innocent people. A car is not a weapon of mass destruction like these piece of shit assault weapons.

Talked my wife out of doing the same. They are safe there, and their school is most certainly on edge as it is. No need to have emotional parents coming by.

Same here. You cant get into hysteria as much as it may seem "ok". Kids sense when something is not right. They will get extra special rewards when they get home though.
