Eh, I don't think A Fistful of Dollars is that great. I'd say Toy Story is the only trilogy with an amazing consistency between all three.

Seriously, Godfather III was just shit. And its shittyness invalidates any considerations of Godfather being called one of the greatest trilogies. Individually Godfather I and II are superior to almost any given film in most trilogies. But as a trilogy, that third installment makes it weak.

Once a master, always a master. Not sure how anyone retires with dignity. The more art produced the more likely the public turns against you, it's just opinion anyway, and the greatest works are what get remembered. Which is what really matters for an artist's legacy.
