Gun enthusiasts thronged to shows around the country on Saturday to buy assault weapons they fear will soon be outlawed after a massacre of school children in Connecticut prompted calls for tighter controls on firearms.

Reuters reporters went to gun shows in Pennsylvania, Missouri and Texas, and found long lines to get in the door, crowds around the dealer booths, a rush to buy assault weapons even at higher prices and some dealers selling out.

The busiest table at the R.K. Gun & Knife show at an exposition center near the Kansas City, Missouri airport was offering assault weapons near the entrance.

West Plains, Missouri dealer Keith's Guns sold out of about 20 AR-15 style assault rifles in a little over an hour, owner Keith Gray said.

An AR-15 type assault weapon was among the guns authorities believe suspect Adam Lanza stole from his mother to use in the massacre of 20 school children and six adults at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school on December 14.

The killing of innocent children at the school shocked the nation and prompted a number of politicians including President Barack Obama to call for a ban on assault weapons and ammunition clips that allow the rapid firing of multiple bullets.

Assault weapon is a broad term commonly used to refer to semi-automatic or automatic weapons that can fire multiple bullets rapidly. From 1994 to 2004 certain assault weapons and ammunition clips of more than 10 bullets were illegal.

The ban was allowed to expire when Republican George W. Bush was in the White House.

Prices for assault weapons have surged since the Connecticut shooting. At the Kansas City show, Jerome Ratliff bought an AR-15 on Saturday for target practice, paying $925. The same model would have cost only about $400 a year ago, he said. Most models were selling for $1,500 or more.

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms, and most gun enthusiasts at the shows on Saturday said more restrictions on guns would not stop mass killings such as Connecticut.

Several dealers and buyers interviewed at the shows supported the NRA proposal to put armed guards in schools.

More than 200 people lined up at each of three entrances on Saturday morning to pay the $8 entrance fee to the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, which has an exhibit hall spanning 25 acres. They crowded the aisles of the show and stood two-deep at booths for assault weapons and ammunition clips.

At all three shows the attendees were overwhelmingly white men, with some women and very few ethnic minorities.

Thousands of guns shows are held in the United States every year. Under federal law, licensed dealers must conduct a background check before selling to a buyer at a gun show.

But in what critics call a "loophole," which some gun control advocates hope to close, unlicensed collectors and other private sales do not require a background check.

A 2009 undercover investigation at seven gun shows by the city of New York found that 63 percent of sellers failed an "integrity" test by selling a weapon to a buyer who admitted he probably could not pass a background check.

Heck I've bought 2 guns since the incident. Got to get it while you still can. I was planning on getting the new CZ-512 0.22 anyways but the other one was an impulse buy

Not surprising. I had someone spouting off nonsense on Facebook today about "liberal" media having a mad on against guns. Her husband chimed in about protecting the 2nd amendment.

So if they are actually outlawed and the federal government sets up a buyback program and these crazies don't participate... will the original purchaser be held responsible if one of the not-bought-back weapons is used in a mass murder? I hope so.

'Merica. I love how gun advocates continue to conveniently ignore facts like this one.

Merry Christmas you paranoid nuts!

Hopefully the new year will bring you a better relationship with reality.

I just googled AR-15. Wow! Who that fuck would need such a thing either for personal protection or hunting?

Looks like the stuff Arnold and his men had in the first Predator.

These paranoid, anti-government, "UN's gonna take my guns!," weirdo's are the mentally unstable type that should not be stockpiling weapons.

They don't want it for either of those reasons. They want it so they can shoot it with their autistic child for fun, until their child has a bad day and decides to murder a pile of kids. The price of freedom.

Meh, don't need a damn assault rifle, they can outlaw them if they want.

Got a shotgun for home defense and a glock for concealed carry. I'm good.

"It doesn't affect me so fuck their rights." I don't own a pistol but I believe you should have the right to own it if you're a law abiding citizen.

These paranoid, anti-government, "UN's gonna take my guns!," weirdo's are the mentally unstable type that should not be stockpiling weapons.

And you're the one to decide that for them? If they own some guns and aren't hurting anyone I don't see the problem.

More ammo for Obama to use against gun lobbyists.

Not really. Every single time a politician talks gun control guns start flying off the shelves. Happens every time and is not a new thing.

Sale will be outlawed, not possession. We have GAF posters who have promised to murder any federal agents who come to collect their weapons if there is a ban.

That position is so normalized in our society that you can express it here without being banned.

People shouldn't be banned for having an opinion you don't like. Hell, people shouldn't be banned just for an opinion at all. That's not right.

I can't really blame people for being angry that the government may violate their rights.

Promising to murder someone isn't really an opinion.

It is while it's still just a fantasy that the government may come to break into their homes and steal their property like common criminals. That isn't going to happen, so nobody is in any danger.

Cool channel. Will watch the rest of his videos.

I'm pro 2nd amendment and I think there are other issues here than just ''guns''. But I don't care for owning them myself. But I do enjoy the debate.

People do get banned for having opinions that may be considered offensive though. If someone posted something racist or homophobic, they'd be banned.
The guy admitted he'd murder anyone who tried to take his guns from him. I'm not really sure if a ban is needed, but mental help certainly is.

Well that's just great.

Happens all the time to marijuana dispensaries. Do you think it's legit to murder DEA officials?

I never said anything about legal. The government is of course going to put laws into place to protect itself while it dismantles our rights.

I've never been big on guns, and had little interest in having one in my household, but coming from the south... eh, live and let shoot. But these fanatical reactions to Obama's presidency and then a national discussion on what guns we should allow citizens to own and how we should screen that ownership is changing my opinion. These people are clearly crazy, I am supposed to trust them with guns?

I don't really understand this video, I'll put it right out there, I'm from the UK so clearly have no idea about gun culture in America, but the thing is the video seems to be saying that assault rifles or semi auto rifles are the most efficient at self defence and better than a handgun. So by that logic you could surely flip it round and say that an assault rifle or semi auto rifle is also the most efficient weapon and better than a handgun at killing a classroom full of kids etc, no? He goes on to say that if someone has an AK he doesn't want to go up against it with a handgun, but isn't that missing the point? If AKs are banned then he surely won't have to since you can't buy them anymore.

Like I said, gun culture is so unbelievably alien to me anyway, this is just the way I'm interpreting the video. It just doesn't seem like a well thought out rebuttal as to why they shouldn't be banned to me. It's like he's ignoring the reason the ban is being proposed in the first place. Am I missing something here? It is late, so I can blame that I guess.

Please clarify.

Please clarify.

We have people like Valnen right here arguing that murder is an appropriate or at least understandable response to confiscatory legislation. These people clearly have very little regard for human lives and they are in possession of weapons that are very efficient at ending them. I find that very fucking scary and I would be very pleased if the government would do something to change that situation.

People on my facebook are pretty much RonPaulitshappening.gif all over the place right now since they've been saying Obama was going to take away their guns since before he was elected. Gun culture just confuses the hell out of me to be honest.

You have little regard for anyone's rights. Scratch that, you have NO regard for anyone's rights.
