Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

I checked out his top 10.

As long as he doesn't do that shit like last year's podcast it should be fine by me (and given what happened in the day one i think he realizes that shit wont fly for this game...hopefully).

I think Brad did a solid job of defending ME3 as his number 1 choice. He played it in a fashion that was very different than release date ME3. And he admits that taking 3 pieces of DLC to make the story more coherent isn't acceptable.

At least he's being consistent since he acknowledges it on the podcast that his experience is way different and the method to get that way was fucking lame.

As pointed out already, you've completely missed the point of the personal top 10 lists if you think that's my intent.

No, I get what the personal top 10 lists are. I was just saying that you going "Hey people who are yelling at me picking ME3, wait for the video!" was weird to me, because that implies that the video is gonna change anything.

It may sound stupid but for me it's a special series and if there really is some way to salvage the finally to some degree, I want to give it a shot. EA doesn't deserve the purchase, I know, It was unforgivably rushed and buying these crucial story DLC packs after the fact makes me a poor consumer.

Brad played a very different Mass Effect 3 than the rest of us played. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself not to play ME3 until after the ending fix + Leviathan DLC.

Watched Brad's Top 10 video.

The Return of the King argument would make waaaay more sense if Mass Effect 2 hadn't been their game of the year already.

Aww, dang it.

I was playing Frog Fractions while listening to the podcast, and I literally quit seconds before they started talking about it.
WHAT IS THIS UNDERWATER BUSINESS. AWOAHGAJAOD DANG IT. HAODAODMAWDA
I don't want to play that again to see... Well, maybe.

I haven't played any Mass Effects so I don't really have a valid opinion on this whole fiasco one way or the other, but giving it top slot on your game of the year seems pretty damn accepting.

You didn't really play Frog Fractions then

Nice Dust and Mark of the Ninja picks Brad. They're honorable mentions for me but damn if they weren't some impressive DL games.

Watching that ME 3 DLC was baffling to me. WHY isn't in the game? There are so many answers about the whole franchise story in a single cutscene. I can't really fault Brad for having the complete experience but it sucks for the rest of us who played the game at release.

Of course there will always be flaws when trying to sum up an entire person's opinion in 1 or 2 words.

There's plenty of talk in game design about categorizing types of players. Open any design book and theres going to be a chapter about 5-10 different reasons people play games. But so far, none have really stuck as a standardized thing. There's graphing systems like this one, but I think gamers are more flexable in their needs than a 2D graph would be able to indicate. I think it's common for people to be a part of multiple categories, while still having one category they hold dear above all others.

Podcasts like these are great for studying up on that subject in particular. Its certainly not an exact science though.

I agree a hundred percent with brad's 2-10. Still need to play Dust though. Holding out for a steam port still.

What is the right order (Is there a right order?) to consume the Giantbomb GOTY stuff? Is it each day I should:

Watch the individual top 10 stuff and then listen to the podcast?

Spoiler for one of the categories:
Fucking Double Dragon under Best Retro Revival as a runner-up instead of Kid Icarus is beyond shameful.

Giant Bomb can make weird picks.

Love that Frog Fractions is getting its propers. Great dark horse runner-up for that category given the criteria, and fun to listen to them go off on it in the podcast.

Watching The Workplace segments really makes me see, for the first time, how dangerously close Jeff is to having George Costanza's hair. Never noticed how thin his hair is on top, and it seems strategically styled so as to hide that.

Not talking shit, not making fun, just saying.

Oh, man, I can't believe Vinny is arguing against the Prologue reveal in Assassin's Creed 3!

They totally lead into that twist. I don't think it's "unfair" at all. Like, on Haytham's hidden blade is a broken Assassin's insignia on it. Plus, he never wore a hood, and constantly referred to his group as an "order." I think the twist is earned, and the whole point was to show how Assassins and Templars aren't that different.

I think the better browser game this year was the Old Spice one, but Frog Fractions is pretty darn interesting for the sake of
getting pretty batshit and teaching you about boxing.

Frog factions is a pretty funny gag/twist but that's it. Definately not top 10 games of the year material. Makes more sense to make up some goofy special category for it.

The way that ME3's ending clouds the rest of the game is sad. 3 is MILES better than 2 in pretty much every way, ending aside.

Valid choice for Brad's GOTY.

Glad to see SM3DL winning 2011's award. The right choice.

Also this should be a spoiler tag free zone, for the podcasts, lists and every game discussed.

I think not giving the best moment to either The Walking Dead or to Ausura's Wrath was a cop out. I dont understand the logic that they both had to many great moments therefore they were disqualified

From the comments it seems the podcast is spoiler city for Spec Ops, Binary Domain etc. Not that it's surprising, but just saying for people that still haven't played... everything. :P
Damnit, was just about to get tucked into the podcast, but Binary Domain is my next game after I finish Far Cry 3.

I really wish they'd simply list the games spoilt in the description of each GOTY podcast.

The reason the DLC is not in the game is why it's not a great game.

If Leviathan was created during ME3 development, then excised due to EA DLC demands, I would feel bad for Bioware but overall my opinion of the game would rise. However, that's not the case. Bioware obviously didn't feel the game needed the extra exposition during their creative process and were only able to see this mistake with hindsight.

We're not gonna start this argument again, but for the record: many people would strongly disagree with that second sentence.

Anyway, even with Brad's reasoning (which is more or less the same as what he's said all along) it still feels weird. He's giving an award to "Mass Effect 3" for things that Mass Effect 3 itself doesn't do.

edit: Honestly the funnier thing was the juxtaposition of Journey at the closest thing to perfect all year, an amazing transcendent experience... #5. Yes, he obviously enjoyed other games more for different reasons, it's just funny on a superficial level.
