Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

OK, I'll fess up, that's totally just shit I'm regurgitating from reviewers. I thought I was getting it for Christmas!

i don't know either, it's installing right now for me

you just made it sound like being in "the deus ex school" doesn't instantly qualify it for every award ever

Oh, no, don't get me wrong, I eat that shit up like Christmas dinner. That type of game is basically 3D game design perfection to me.

Mark of the Ninja is a much better game than Dishonored. The stealth is a lot tighter and the game as a whole has a lot more direction, compared to Dishonored where there are some good ideas but they don't deliver on enough interesting scenarios, there is a lot of linear filler. I got quite far in it but don't feel like going back.

Having completed Dishonored a few weeks back and having just the last few days got into Mark, I have to say I agree completely with this.

The developers of each set out with different goals in mind though, Mark of Ninja is a proper stealth game, Dishonored is happy to let you melee or run and gun your way through levels. Dishonored excels in offering you multiple ways to achieve your objective, Mark of the Ninjas is a much more linear game, sure, there are different paths through levels, but it is a stealth game.

I wouldn't be so harsh on Dishonored, but I agree that Mark of the Ninja came together splendidly. Everything about that game feels right, and it's an absolute joy to play.

Honestly, though, cutting Kid Icarus immediately from the revival category though is dumb as shit, controls or no controls

you hear me gb? FEEL MY IMPOTENT RAGE

Oh yeah, they're whining about the controls, not the whole fact that it has fuck-all to do with the original game and, at the beginning, actively suffers from the connection.

Patrick's a cool guy, someone convince him to play that game. Or Brad, he uses his 3DS. I have a feeling they'll have a "3D Land" moment with that game should they "beat" it. Lol at Jeff acting like he actually has an opinion on the matter.

Just started. Their praise for the completely awful episode 2 of Walking Dead has really sold me on my decision to stop there. Thanks Giant Bomb!

Problems with DisHonored
A) The story
B) Corvo(?) doesn't seem to have a spine. Some of the spots you can 'crouch' under seem downright ridiculous.

See those are actual arguments that could legit be raised, but they're so dismissive of it for unrelated reasons. (Although actively suffers? The callbacks are amazing!)

Well to be fair, I think the stairs scene of TWD ep 2 is reaaaaaaaaaaaally something. Probably my first notion of Telltale's skill with cinematic camerawork which ramped up from 3 onwards.

In retrospect, I wouldn't change it for the world, because that Chapter 9 revelation is my favourite gaming moment of the year... but I kinda fucking hate Medusa. I like the callbacks a lot. I'm more just talking about the bigger picture of needing- or feeling the need- to reflect the original, super-generic Palutena vs Underworld plot of the original for a bit before shit goes crazy and the game gets a proper plot.

You mean Patrick?

Keep listening, you. Their unnecessarily long discussion on best surprise of the year is a must.

Of course I'll keep listening, just commenting as I go! But considering I hated Halo 4, Dishonored and the second episode of TWD (I did love the first) I know I'll just be annoyed by all end of the year discussions.

Holding out for FLT praise! Hopefully Dave played Drox Operative or Fallen Enchantress :(

Oh, just reread what I wrote. I meant "stop there" as in stop playing TWD, not stop listening to the podcast.

It's necessary for the frankly amazing reveal. And honestly... I never expected much of a plot out of Kid Icarus in the first place

I guess the super thin plot during those early hours helps you concentrate on learning how to play the game, at least. It just has an unfortunate side-effect of making me never want to touch those chapter again once I've completed the game.

And yes, plot was crazy. Character of the Year discussion felt incredibly empty without any of the cast of Uprising.

The Gods are amazing. Seriously just amazing.

Pit is Pit, but it's really the Gods that stand out in that game. Well, okay, they're pretty much the only other characters, but you know what I mean.

PRETTY PALU-TEEEEENAAAAAA~

About B)

He's goes from crouching to crawling. I'll admit it looks a bit off because they just don't have any prone animations.

Man it feels like Brad is just dominating the GOTY conversations so far (His arguments are solid though). Kinda worried we'll get a situation like last year.

Nah. They're too aware of that now, they seem to be cutting off the discussions earlier this time.

Also Brad's no 1 game, Mass Effect 3 has no chance of winning. Don't think the others even have it on their top 10 list, while most of them will have Walking Dead and XCOM on there really high.

Not happening. As said before, Brad is aware that he is alone with this, and so we will not have him rooting for ME3 as goty.

Also ME3 wasn't even on Ryan's top 10 at all, and it doesn't seem like it'll be on Jeff or Patrick's top 10's at all. I think it might make Vinny's, but probably on the lower end. And they strongly hinted in the last regular podcast (I forget how it was phrased, I'm sure someone here knows offhand) that ME3 made #8 in the site's overall top 10 for the year. So I think we're safe from a ME3 filibuster, thank God.

I still think it's going to come down to X-Com versus Walking Dead, but I was surprised to see X-Com as Ryan's #1 and Walking Dead as #2, I would have guessed the opposite on those. Jeff doesn't seem super hot on Walking Dead so I'm guessing he'll go for X-Com over it with Ryan. I think Patrick and Brad will go with Walking Dead (based on Brad's top 10 and Patrick's obvious love for WD), so Vinny will be the wild card.

So obviously Vinny is going to filibuster for Sleeping Dogs.

Yeah I think you're right, I'm mostly speaking of how he managed to convince everyone that TWD EP4 was one of the top 2 when I remember them thinking it was easily one of the weaker ones in previous podcasts. GOTY will likely be a matchup between TWD and XCOM, with XCOM possibly winning since it was pretty much unanimous praise. Jeff didn't finish TWD and it sounds like Brad is finding alot of reasons to dislike it.

It's a shame that Dishonored isn't really getting attention from anyone other than Patrick. I guess it should be expected since they were all tied up with XCOM, and Mark of the Ninja scratched that itch for them earlier in the year. Deus Ex HR didn't really get mentioned last year either.

Holy shit day 2: has someone been watching to much Brass Eye?

Solid so far but I just don't have the time to listen to all these podcasts. :(

They haven't spoiled the last episode of The Walking Dead yet right? I was thinking about playing it today but I didn't want to feel like shit on Christmas.

Yeah, but I think Patrick would insist they play 999 first and two visual novels in a row might be a little too much to stomach for a few of them

The payoff would be so fucking worth it though. I swear to god.
