Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Yeah they're fantastic

I have to say Workplace was a little better in terms of cutting than Brad's investigation thingy, whatever they called it. It fits them better too I think

I agree, but that intro to today's really got me. The first time Brad started throwing those terms out had me rocking in my chair. I think the effect wore off as the video went on and I got accustomed to it, but man that first time.

I must have missed that. At which point do they discuss Double Dragon?

Edit: Or is that the day1 part with Revival? I only remember apathy in that discussion from anyone except Brad.

It's in day 1, but Jeff trashed it when it first came out. I remember him giving it bad to that game.

Darkness II was decent, but that's it. Considering they're burying Binary Domain, I'm not surprised it never got a mention.

Suprised (no pun intended) by the pure amount of debate over Best Surprise. Any 4 of those could win it, with just reasoning.

I'd still say ZombiU was a bigger shock than Far Cry 3 though.

Yeah, Far Cry is already established for better or worse while Zombi U had to fight against new IP, launch title and the infamous legacy of Red Steel (which is dumb because Zombi U is made by a better team).

You underestimated the power of the Brad filibusterer.

I think they should have just let the four stand.

Ryan's top ten reminded me best use of licensed song by far was Club Foot in American Nightmare. It kicks off the first really crazy sequence in that game and it's amazing.

Edit: And it's mentioned in the podcast, but none of these other knuckleheads played it.

Having finally decided on my top 10 of the year, I realised how different my overall impression of the year has been compared to the GB guys after I hit submit, ha.

I really want to play some Far Cry 3 but I've exhausted the GOTY podcasts so far and it's my podcast game :'(

Anyone know just how major the Sleeping Dogs and Assassins Creed spoilers are?

I'm playing through both right now.

They mention both early major AC3 spoilers and late Sleepy Dogs spoilers.

EDIT: YES IT IS. I don't think they touch any later stuff. But I ain't a doctor so don't take only my word for it.

Also, y'know, I didn't really see FC3 as most surprising. I didn't give a shit about the game prerelease, and after playing about it, it surely doesn't make me give a shit about it now. Game looked as if it tried to improve the things people hated about FC2 but without keeping the things people liked. The consistency in tone/narration/mechanics, the always in first person perspective, the stuff that made people love that game. But even without the FC2 comparisons, I just felt the game was uninteresting. Didn't give a shit about its player, its world or its narrative.

Then again, I ain't deciding these things.

... episode 2 was the best walking dead episode.

Is Wol(f)paw making a top 10? I think his was the most interesting from last year (it helps he is a good writer). Sessler's this year (the only one I read, out of curiosity) was pretty much a joke. A lazy GAFer puts more effort in his GAF GotY vote list.

Because it has ME3 in it, right?

Playing through binary domain now.

You people calling it for goty must have not fought the gorilla boss. Holy shit if it isn't one of the most obnoxious boss fights I've played. Doesn't help that the dodging is finicky as fuck.

Cain is a bro though, I'll give you guys that.

Um, yeah we did.

Um, yeah we did.

No Brad, you didn't.

The thing about dodge is understanding its limits and never putting yourself in a situation where it is useless. Can be very tricky. I'm not exactly sure what pumping it with upgrades does, but seems to mostly help with getting shot at.

I didn't have too much of a problem with the first part of the fight. As it goes on... and on, I grew annoyed with its health total.

The Walking Dead talk was some really great stuff. Everyone brought up a lot of good points about the pros and cons of each episode. Wish Jeff could have been in the discussion but I understand time was an issue for him to complete the series.

I don't think so. Borderlands, Trine, Limbo, [Hotline Miami?] live and die based on their chosen art style. I think Dust is ugly as fuck regardless of the furry stigma. Greasy pastels don't appeal to me and it's why I skipped the game. Shit, I have to look at it the whole time!

Brad acts like not liking the art makes you some kind of bigot. It's bizarre.

Most of the people naysaying the game were accusing it of being furry, he had a problem with that. Not because of people like you who just didn't like the art.

Um, yeah we did.
Then I'm surprised douchebag dance hour was picked over it. That's at the beginning of the game before you've done a thing, while in American Nightmare it comes only after
you've assembled this oil derrick with no idea what's going to happen when you turn it on, except it's bound to be bad. Then that quiet moment explodes with noise and fire, belting out what might as well be the other Alan's theme song as a goddamn satellite comes crashing out of the sky.

Only choice I haven't nodded along with so far.

I'm surprised the ending theme to The Walking Dead (Alela Diane's "Take Us Back") wasn't mentioned for best use of a licensed song. It wasn't ironic (which seems to be the #1 qualification for that category), but it was powerful at that point in time.

(

That is the way it should be it is all down to personal choice. It would be boring if we all liked the same stuff and agreed. I've already disagreed with several of their choices, but who cares it is their list not mine:)

That and it's inclusion in Ryan's top ten made me realise that I need to play it! Bought it on xbla ages ago and never got round to it.

Might just pick up the pc version it's only £5.

I agree with Paper Planes winning the Best Use of a Licensed Song award, but I'm a little sad that Ryan forgot Max Payne 3's use of the song Tears by Health, in the last mission. It simply was fantastic.

It was. I suggested 9 Circulos from Emicida earlier in the thread but both those tracks were composed specifically for Max Payne 3 if I'm correct, so not really licensed tracks I suppose.

Best licensed mix in Max Payne 3 was probably the nightclub mix by Trouble and Bass - "Trouble in Brazil". So awesome to hear when you blasted your way through the club.

btw the track I suggested from The Darkness II was "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos

Problem with then roll for me is that it comes out so inconsistently, usually with a fair amount delay. It just sucks.

Just finished it, and I do have some complaints, such as the huge amount of fucking driving shooting sequences, the qtes which I don't think are implemented well, the movement which feels a little off to me, just in how sticking to cover and rolling works, and holy crap, it just turns into a boss rush at a point, which is fine but the huge amount of bullet sponge bosses gets exhausting after awhile. Overall still enjoyed it, seeing that I just finished the whole thing in one go. Highest point of the game is definitely the characters, and I enjoyed the story even considering that it is kinda dumb.

Also did I miss something or did they never explain how he got the name The Survivor?

i think there's a line or two about his past military experience, but i think it's just supposed to be a short-hand way of saying that Dan has "seen some shit".

also i cannot believe dark souls: prepare to die edition wasn't even mentioned for 2012's 2011 GOTY, but i guess none of them (read: Vinny) actually played it.

To be fair prepare to die edition is pretty much the poster child of bad PC ports until the durante fix.

That's a tricky one. Number 1 or 2 on my list but without the DSFix, I wouldn't have touched it. I guess if Brad judged ME3 on his experience so, anyone who played Dark Souls PC should include DSFix if that's how they played it. It's a little different because it's a fan made patch but it's impossible to separate it from the game if you've only played the PC version that way.

I agree in a way but I feel there probably should be a distinction between fan- or developer-made.

Drew picked Halo 4, but he's not in on the podcast so I dunno if he has any pull.

The guys who haven't been in the room in the past have had zero pull. If they have some sort of Flight Sim Of the Year they might just let him make a list like the did with Dave for "Eastern European Game of the Year" or whatever they did a couple years ago.
