Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

To be fair prepare to die edition is pretty much the poster child of bad PC ports until the durante fix.

I wouldn't say that. Sure it sucks when the game doesn't have graphics options, but the category of truly awful ports is reserved for games that crash, don't work, erase your save files and other similar stuff. Dark Souls looked like a console game, but it worked.

I wonder how they pick which order to reveal the personal top 10 lists. I would think the only thing that makes sense would be trying to maximize activity/hits...

Problem with then roll for me is that it comes out so inconsistently, usually with a fair amount delay. It just sucks.

Just finished it, and I do have some complaints, such as the huge amount of fucking driving shooting sequences, the qtes which I don't think are implemented well, the movement which feels a little off to me, just in how sticking to cover and rolling works, and holy crap, it just turns into a boss rush at a point, which is fine but the huge amount of bullet sponge bosses gets exhausting after awhile. Overall still enjoyed it, seeing that I just finished the whole thing in one go. Highest point of the game is definitely the characters, and I enjoyed the story even considering that it is kinda dumb.

Also did I miss something or did they never explain how he got the name The Survivor?

These were pretty much my thoughts. The biggest sin that a cover shooter can commit is making cover feel too sticky. The cover movement in Gears 1 is still the high water mark in these type of games for me. Reading some peoples reactions, you'd think it was the second coming of Vanquish.

The guys who haven't been in the room in the past have had zero pull. If they have some sort of Flight Sim Of the Year they might just let him make a list like the did with Dave for "Eastern European Game of the Year" or whatever they did a couple years ago.
Halo game of the year category? My vote goes to Halo 2.

The list we've all really been waiting for...

Rich "ThugNinja" Gallup's Top 10 Games of the Year
5. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Yeah I went there. Initially, I didn’t know where to put Reckoning to properly reflect the love and effort put into it by my friends and colleagues at Big Huge Games. Solidly in the midst of the year’s best feels like the perfect spot. I played Reckoning for over 100 hours, and some day I’ll be ready to play it all again. An open-world fantasy RPG with slick, fluid combat is truly special, and to pull it all off with so few bugs is a rare thing to be appreciated. Apologies if you feel this is a bit of a homer pick, I promise to never do it again for a 38 Studios title...

lol

What a swish picture.

Only list I've read so far. <3 Rich.

Yeah TWD seems to bore Jeff, but I'm not sure how far in he is - either way I doubt it'll be a front runner for GOTY. Far Cry 3 seems to be out too so that'll leave XCOM and maybe Dishonored?

Jeff appreciates good gameplay mechanics, so I'd be surprised if he does like TWD.

Well, fuck it. Listening to the podcasts today even though I haven't played some of the games. By the time I play them I might have forgotten it all.

They sold me on XCOM yesterday. Just waiting for the best deal to roll in this week.

That was probably the best XCOM demo you could ever get. My enjoyment of playing the game hasn't come close to watching them play that round!

I might play more tonight as I listen to the podcast. I really need to get back to it...

As long as it's not walking dead, I think you'll be fine. Most of the stuff I heard for the games I haven't played didn't dissuade me from the idea of playing them in the future.

Vinny, Ryan, Jeff and Patrick will all go for it. The Shoemaker's filibuster will fall on deaf ears this year.

:)

x-com was number 3 on Brad's list. his comments - aside from the technical issues- have been very positive. the only other games he placed higher than it were TWD and ME3.

Aside from that, Brad's "filibuster" history is really just Minerva's Den (if that). Last year's skyrim/ SR3 lengthy debate was just that - a debate - with even matched sides. I have a hunch the consensus will be reached quicker this year.

  • The day two video is just... I LOVE GIANT BOMB
  • After today's podcast, i can't see anything but XCOM winning at the end. They seem to have a strong consensus on it, unlike any of the other contenders.
  • Dyad hasn't gotten a single mention yet. It would suck if they forgot about that incredible game.
  • I agree that TWD episode 2 is the best! I am not horror afficionado Patrick Klepek, so i was still figuring out the twist when it was time to eat dinner. IT WAS FUCKED UP

Well, it's one of the games I haven't played but I'll probably do so when it's $5 or so. I'll just check that thread that has the spoiler times.

We are forgetting that Brad might filibuster other categories that are not GOTY, like best DLC :P (don't know if it has been discussed yet).

In all honesty, I just hope the discussion doesn't feel like last time. The mood was a bit heavy and it didn't feel right with Ryan's betrayal and all. Skyrim of course was a worthy contender (unlike Mass Effect this year for any big category), but I thought the other guys went so nuts over SR3 that conceding to Brad just by means of exhaustion was hard to listen through.

what is their deal with loving the "pot fields" mission in far cry 3 so much? do they just unabashedly love that skrillex track that much? i thought it was neat sure, but the pot burning in GTA: San Andreas is miles more interesting and fun to play. it's just not as remarkable as they seem to think it is.

two cents: i thought the syndicate track was better anyway.

Day 03 Video

Oh, Drew... We knew ye well.
Oh my gosh, officer Davisovsky reporting for duty.
BRAD LOOKS FREAKING SICK! Oh man.
"In english..." "MURDER."

Vinny's appearance and Drew's printed off review image... You guys are killing me.
Dave as a suspect too! This is my favorite one yet.
Jeff's pushing the chair as he walked out was the perfect touch.
That ending still!

Easily my favorite of the week, so far.

edit: A little surprised at Jeff's #1, but I'm glad things continue to be different. It will make that final podcast all the more interesting.
