Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Is my first impression of Binary Domain as "Shitty Vanquish" misguided?

I'm not even sure I want to continue playing this game, what's there to like about it? This Dan guy is making even Sam Gideon look like a well-fleshed out, interesting character.

My first impression of Vanquish was "boring Binary Domain". Odd how that works. Neither Sam or the story went anywhere of note.

binary domain and spec ops on vinny's list? how is there ever ANY argument that vinny is the best?

How far in are you? There's an hour or two in the beginning where the game is in boring tutorial mode.

Vanquish has one of the worst, most non-existent storylines ever, so that's no surprise. Sam Gideon is a terrible character, which only goes to speak volumes about how I feel about Dan and Bo in BD, so far. If they're not as good as Sam Gideon, then what the hell are they. I just want Bo to shut the fuck up, he's driving me crazy.

The story in BD so far does seem interesting, and I'm not even skipping the cutscenes, which I always do in action games. More than I can say about Vanquish. Vanquish is still one of the best third person shooters I've ever played, though. Gameplay > Story in Vanquish's case, it really doesn't need one. I'm about 2 hours into BD now and the story is definitely starting to get interesting, I kind of dig it. Gameplay totally sucks in Domain, though. It's just no fun to play for me.

Can't really compare them. Different devs after all. The story in BD is amazing cuz Nagoshi and the Yakuza team worked on it. They always do story well. BD plays more like a looser faster version of Gears of War, imo

I only just finished Sequence 2, but it's kind of boring me so far too. :\

If the entire game is just climbing viewpoints, burning down Borgia towers, and other repetitive tasks I won't be too eager to move on to Rev and 3 after this. Maybe once the stuff with building up the assassins' guild kicks in it'll be more interesting.
Wait until you start gathering and building up your assassin posse. The story missions also get more interesting around there.

There are just too, too many direct correlations between BD and Vanquish that I'm seeing not to be able to compare them. My brain won't let me do anything else. Dan and Sam might as well be the same person, with the same kind of super suit (Although Sam's is obviously better) shooting nondescript robots.

I will keep plowing through Binary Domain, because I'm finding the story interesting.

Yeah, FTL was a game that was cut to make room for personal favorites, I think. It didn't have a single backer with enough passion to protect it. It's a shame.

I need to know about Walking Dead spoilers in the final GOTY discussion, but the "Here's where the spoilers are" thread on GB hasn't been updated yet.

Fucking called it. :)

Also, has anyone noticed the cut when Patrick was talking about Mass Effect 3 ? It was in the first quarter, I'd say. I wonder what they said that warranted being cut.

And lastly, it was far from being a bloodbath. In fact, it was the most civil end-of-the-year deliberations Giant Bomb has had so far. He's hoping next year will be more intense.

Yeah, I haven't listened yet but I assume they come to the decision quicker than last years. This podcast is close to 2 1/2hrs while last year's was almost 4.
The fuck is important about Fez?
It has a bad memory leak.

Funny to hear Brad railing against TWD for its technical issues on one platform after completely glossing over even more severe issues with Skyrim on one platform last year.

Amazing what happens when you play on the affected platform.

Lately I can't watch anything on giant bomb. The videos don't load at all and I've tried every browser you can name. I click the video and nothing. Anyone with a solution out there?
I just use an extension to download .mp4 files from youtube and then watch those. Embedded video on desktops continues to be crap.

Entertaining stuff overall, even if I have no affinity for genres they seem to adore.

Need to disagree with Patrick. TWD had some bugs and performance issues on PS3 as well. Not as bad as 360 from what I read but I encountered a few on PS3.

I'm ok with X:COM being #1, but I have no desire to ever play it.

We (or someone) should perhaps come up with a top 5 or 10 Giant Bomb moments of the year. My picks would be something like:

#1 Flight Club P-51D "Flight Club runs into a Cloudy Situation"
#2 Learning how to Fly from a Pro
#3 Big Jeffrey (Special emphasis on the "And Remember Kids..." parts
#4 E3: Justin McElroy and the Time Belt (starts sometime after an hour and a half)
#5 Sleeping Dogs Halloween Special: Eternal Repair (plus, having the game crash and the time killers was great)

Oh, I just thought, his goatee thing is pretty repulsive now that I think about it.

:P

Oh, sorry to hear that. The goatee is prominently represented throughout the podcast. It's going to be a rough listen for you.

I only asked because a lot of people seem to dislike his general snarkiness and there isn't much of that except during the category begging for it.

From my experience PS3 version of Walking Dead has just as many performance issues on my 2 year old console. It was actually worse for me on that version compared to the 360.

I think you misread me, I was kidding around. I don't have a problem with you disliking the guy, I was trying to figure out what about him you don't like because he was more laid back during this podcast and I was hoping to ease your mind.

Ahhh, gotcha!

Well it sounds like he's toned it down a bit for this which is good news. I guess it was like finding out Adam Sandler was going to be in the final season of Breaking Bad at first.

I find it really annoying when people start seeing sexism or racism everywhere (see FC3 discussion in today's podcast for example). Who cares if the main character is white and he's the one who helps the locals saving their island. The characters in the game never says anything about that. The whole story of the game is that a dude (who happens to be white...so obviously he's automatically a racist...) who goes on vacation on a tropical island and get stuck in the middle of a civil war.

Out of the games that keep showing up this year, I've played almost all of them and mostly agree with exception to XCOM. I played it for a few hours and was bored to tears with it. I need to go back and try it again, I have to be missing something.

I'm incredibly disappointed by the lack of nominations for Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

I feel it deserved some recognition amongst this prestigious list of fine games.

I only played XCom Ironman (Normal) and I was glad I did. I was lucky though, I only hit one major bug during the last mission, which I was able to replay. If it was bug free I would suggest that every single person play it that way.

"Let's cut FTL"

Vinny is dead to me
Vinny was the FTL heel :(

Still going through today's podcast but another amazing GOTY week from GB, as usual. Love how it's a showcase of how ambitious, funny and duumb (not dumb) they are as much as it is a really nice and varied retrospective on the year in gaming. Major props to Drew and Vinny, thanks for all the hard work duders.
