Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Dang it, I really wish Jeff and Alex had made a legitimate push for WWE '13. I've never touched a wrestling game, but it would have been so awesome for them to team up against Brad and Vinny on ME3, since you know Patrick would have joined them just to mess with ME3.

I hope you're proud of yourselves. I bought FTL and I have no idea why.
Thanks for the great week of entertainment, GB staff.

Chem Trails - GOTY 2012

Was Diablo 3 even mentioned during GOTY? It was like it didn't exist. I don't think it would have won or even made top 10, but Brad gave it 5 stars. I'm pretty sure 10,000,000 and Space Team got more airtime this week than D3.

If it was mentioned it got too much attention.

only thing I'd add would be: It would have been nice to have Planetside 2 make any appearance in the Best Multiplayer category.

Jeff sliding Syndicate through so it didn't have to contend in the "1 person likes this game" list of cuts was perplexing.
He's been playing this game for a while, boss man or not dude knows how to get his horse in the race. Kind of made me want to check it out too with that pitch, it goes on sale regularly so I'm sure I'll have the chance. Just hope co-op isn't completely dead by now.

The podcast is kind of annoying...

3 guys really like a game, the other 3 haven't play it and it gets cut no questions. One person likes a game and it makes the top 10. Wat.

They would probably be better off just combining their individual top 10s to make an overall list.

Hotline Miami is waaaaay better than Jeff gives it credit for (and than the crew had been giving before Alex arrived) and they've overrated the shit out of Fez through this whole process.

Really enjoying listening to this, though, I'm also really glad Alex is in on the process this year.

I feel bad for Hotline Miami because I feel like the GB crew completely missed the point of the game.

Edit: Hahaha wow. Beaten to the same thought within the same minute.

When all was said and done, I remembered back and couldn't for the life of me figure out how the hell Jeff managed to essentially sneak a game into the site's top ten list that he was the only champion for. Like, I blinked and all of a sudden Syndicate was locked into the top ten. I was really surprised that the group cut FTL but managed to keep Syndicate.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed me some Syndicate, but Jeff's silver tongue definitely worked its magic this year.

It was Ryan. The same reason that Skyrim won GOTY last year.

Convincing Ryan lets you convince the rest of the group by proxy. lol

For comparison's sake, using the five main guys top ten lists, I created a weighted list off of those to see what the results were:

1) XCOM- 46 points
2) The Walking Dead- 37 points
3) Mark of the Ninja- 21 points
Tied for 4th) Mass Effect 3 and Fez- 17 points
Tied for 6th) Journey and Far Cry 3- 14 points
Tied for 8th) FTL and Forza Horizon- 11 points
10) Asura's Wrath- 9 points

Tied for 11th with 8 points: Syndicate, Hotline Miami, ZombiU, and Sleeping Dogs

If you add Alex because he was in the final panel this year, you get this:

1) XCOM- 53 points
2) The Walking Dead- 47 points
3) Journey- 23 points
4) Mark of the Ninja- 21 points
Tied for 5th) Mass Effect 3, Fez, and Forza Horizon- 17 points
8) Hotline Miami-16 points
Tied for 9th) FTL and Far Cry 3- 14 points
11)Sleeping Dogs- 10 points
12) Asura's Wrath- 9 points

Pretty crazy how far Jeff was able to elevate Far Cry 3. It was basically, "Far Cry 3 was my #1 game, so it's one of the three in contention for GOTY", when it only managed to crack one other person's top 10. Also, it appears Forza and FTL were robbed no matter how you look at it

Thanks I was hoping somebody would do this. Really shows how silly the final podcast ends up being.

He was better than anyone at explaining why he liked the game. That's why Jeff got his in there but Alex failed with both Hotline Miami and FTL. If he had an argument like that for FC3 in him that probably would have gone to the top of the list.

Far Cry 3 also came out pretty late. I wonder if it missed some people's lists due to them not having finished it in time.

Nobody even made a hint of objection at putting it in the top 3, so I imagine this may have been a contributing factor.

It's impressive the way Jeff kept Syndicate at #7 when Vinny was trying to get Sleeping Dogs higher, Jeff instead threatened a better game and completely changed the conversation.

I think Jeff knew 3rd place was as far as he could push FC3 with TWD and XCOM having such widespread support. So with basically no argument, he placed it at 3rd, when only one other person had it in their top ten (Brad had it 7th)

Jeff carries the most weight when it comes to GOTY.

I was pretty annoyed when Brad said, pretty blatantly, that Forza shouldn't be in the top ten because it's a driving game. No matter how good it is.

I haven't even played Forza Horizon and I think that's a load of bullshit.

So what's with giantbomb's 50's mindset towards sex and nudity? Or is it just Patrick?

It just annoyed me that they said it might be the best forza game.

Also, more on Hotline Miami: I feel like they just missed the point of the game's story. They seemed to think the only good part was the soundtrack. And talked about how much fun they had killing shit.

And I'm like, did you miss the commentary on the very violence that you enjoyed so much?

Hotline Miami had a story?

(I didn't go back and get all that secret password stuff)

I thought any commentary it had would have been apparent just through the vibe of the thing.

Well I'm all finished with the GOTY content :( Hours of content and I'm left wanting more

Fantastic job all around. Giantbomb put every other site to shame this week. Looking back I think The Workplace was my favorite of the parodies, but Vinny in Roomies was sooo good. It was sad how tired the guys were by the time top 10 rolled around, there was no fight left in them by that point.

The only thing that really annoyed me was how often they trotted out "I hate this genre but love this game!" Hopefully in 2013 they make more of an effort to approach games with an open mind and try stuff out of their comfort zone.

Anyway, on to 2013! But easy on the sugar giantbomb... you guys are sweet enough :P

Saying that about any type of game is dumb.

Did you guys make your own Top 10 GOTY Lists on Giant Bomb back when they were pushing that feature? I did for 2009 and 2010, and apparently I only played six games in 2010.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed me some Syndicate, but Jeff's silver tongue definitely worked its magic this year.

Suddenly another voice spoke, low and melodious, its very sound an enchantment. Those who listened unwarily to that voice could seldom report the words that they heard; and if they did, they wondered, for little power remained in them. Mostly they remembered only that it was a delight to hear the voice speaking, all that it said seemed wise and reasonable, and desire awoke in them by swift agreement to seem wise themselves. When others spoke they seemed harsh and uncouth by contrast; and if they gainsaid the voice, anger was kindled in the hearts of those under the spell. For some the spell lasted only while the voice spoke to them, and when it spoke to another they smiled, as men do who see through a juggler’s trick while others gape at it. For many the sound of the voice alone was enough to hold them enthralled; but for those whom it conquered the spell endured when they were far away, and ever they heard that soft voice whispering and urging them. But none were unmoved; none rejected its pleas and its commands without an effort of mind and will, so long as its master had control of it.

"Well?" it said now with gentle question. "Why not put Syndicate on the list? Will you give me nothing in this debate?" Its tone was that of a kindly heart aggrieved by injuries undeserved.

I must not have been paying attention at that point. What did he say?

When their talking about Far Cry 3 they all seem to be off put by the fact that their is a topless scene, and especially Patrick seems utterly disgusted when one of them mentions a sex scene and without him even seeing it or knowing anything about it he completely sighs and writes it off. Theirs also nothing sexual or erotic about it. In fact it's actually quite morbid and is there for good reason.

I noticed that, too, and didn't really understand it either.

Jeff makes me wish I jumped on Syndicate when it was $5 on Amazon. The man has a way with words

He's the reason I did jump on the deal and oddly enough, my taste in games doesn't align very well with Jeff's and I will be surprised if I enjoy it. I let him get into my head.

Ah, I'll have to listen to it again sometime. I was doing a lot of other things and I wasn't really paying attention to big chunks.

That sex scene in Far Cry 3 is terrrrrrrrrrrriiiible. And Patrick is right to sigh about it.

Sex scenes in videogames are completely dumb and pandering.

Thanks I was hoping somebody would do this. Really shows how silly the final podcast ends up being.

I won't listen to the goty podcasts after last year.

It's like they're too tired after too many hours of talking to put together convincing arguments and just toss games for nitpicky shit. Dismissing genres just cause or how negatives that get one game cut can easily be applied to the one that wins. I'll watch the videos and read their personal lists, but I find the podcasts a waste.

Sex scenes in videogames are completely dumb and pandering.

I agree both that it has a point it's trying incredibly clumsily to make and also that it's terrible, both at making that point and at being, well, a sex scene

here's the other thing: nobody ever mentions it again. It might as well have never actually happened.

So what's with giantbomb's 50's mindset towards sex and nudity? Or is it just Patrick?

This is part of a massive conversation about women in games, the medium as a boys/immature club etc. A topic that has extremely strong opinions on both sides. I imagine they found the sex stuff in Far Cry 3 just gratuitous etc.

I really don't see what's so terrible about it, and who's it pandering to? People who are into tribal chicks and
get off to being killed right after they finish
? I mean I know for every fucked up fetish out there theirs a dude who's into it, but I really don't think that's what they were going for.

I don't think they are inherently dumb. I just haven't seen one done well. The Witcher 2 does some playful things but the execution still ends up awkward. Someday writing and technology will come together and a videogame sex scene will be done well.

To be fair, I never played Far Cry 3.

Oh right, I thought we were talking about the other sex scene.

It's tough to put too much stock in the Giantbomb GOTY list because not everyone spent the same amount of time, if any, with all the games. It really just turns into who makes the most compelling argument for the games unique to their top 10. Which is fine by me. Jeff asserted himself with Far Cry 3 and Syndicate and the other guys just rolled over. Good on him.

It's already been done. You guys need to go back and play Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy to refresh your memory.
