Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Syndicate's so high, damn the power of that crazy gypsy magic.

And Patrick's crazy, "PS3 has no performance issues." Made me gasp, gasp I tell you. Maybe it was different when you downloaded the episodes but on a disc the performance was often terrible. The story outweighed the bad but still.
I saw it running on a PS3 (downloaded version) and it ran like ass. A good almost second of loading before every camera perspective change.

Yes I understand that, but when you are assembling a list with a group of people, you usually bring your opinion to the table and argue on the basis of such. In one particular case, we know that Jeff has played ZombiU, thought is was a good game, but didn't think enough of it to include it in his top 10 list. We also know that Jeff thought that Forza was his fifth and FTL his sixth game of the year, yet during the podcast he was easy to dismiss FTL and Forza while agreeing (solely with Patrick) that ZombiU needs to make the site's top 10 list. What the hell kind of sense does that make? Jeff was basically arguing against his own stated opinion of his top ten list!

If they all did that for each of their games in their lists then the podcast would be 10 hours long. They have to accept some of their favorite games will be on the list, and some won't. Jeff pushed Syndicate and Far Cry 3, Patrick pushed ZombiU, Brad pushed ME3, Vinny pushed Sleepy Dogs.

TWD PC has performance issues, too, which is crazy considering what it's doing and how it looks. The beginning of the first episode stuttered insanely to the point that I almost gave up on the game. It smoothed out after that but still it had major framerate drops in random places and my machine is no slouch. Now that Telltale has this big hit, they desperately need to invest on the technical side of things.

Disabling shadows solved all hitching issues for me on the PC.

I don't know if I disabled them completely. I know I at least turned them down and that did make a big difference. I was through the worst section before I stopped playing and looked at possible performance tweaks.

Not it would't, it would be longer, but only because we would end-up with much more passionate discussion than we got during this GOTY. It would also force those on the sidelines during these individual discussions to have to pick a side, which also causes dramatic discussion. Isn't this what we want? This was basically, "everyone pick an individual game and tack it onto the end of the list"

Ya and many of the game's most emotional moments are ruined because of bugs. The scene with duck in act 3 is a lot less impact-full when his character model isn't there.

I thought it was kinda funny how at the start of the GOTY discussion Brad seemed very concerned about the possibility of someone unilaterally removing a game from the list.

You're talking about every single one of them pushing every non-mutual game that's on their lists.

Hell, why don't we start with some of these guys pushing mutual games on their lists. Like I said before Forza and FTL were on several of their lists and were not pushed at all.

All I can say that this is the first GOTY coverage where I do not agree with them on many aspects, and some games were cut too fast from their lists during the podcasts. But it was fun as always, see you next year guys.

Gosh next year will be weird, last games of this gen, and some of those look like real stinkers.

Here's hoping Bioshock Infinite lives up to the hype.

Don't you get that they release these podcasts to explain why the list is the way it is? Their process of assembling it isn't to add up the rankings of their individual top 10 lists. To say that the list they came up with differs from a mathematically defined list is a pointless statement to make even though it is true. You're trying to impose your idea of what their list should be even though they went to great lengths explaining that it isn't that, just as it isn't a collection of the highest scoring games (Fez 4 stars hi) or whatever formula you want to use to assemble a list.

So much begging the question it just wants to go home.

Because some of their higher non-mutual games had to get included. IIRC, Forza and FTL weren't very high on anyone's lists.

Syndicate is shit. A seriously bad, generic game. GB's dismissal of most FPS games and love for Syndicate casts serious doubt on their tastes.

The premium that they put on even a small unique feature in a game over the pillars of mechanics and presentation is just something that I can't agree with.

Yeah I really don't understand how Syndicate got scored so highly against everything else when it was only Jeff that played it; annoying when you see games like Dust, FTL and Hotline Miami got knocked off for it.

If anyone else had played Syndicate I don't think they'd let Jeff get away with it, Syndicate is not a good game and Jeff is very much in the minority on it.

Already said this though but that was really my only gripe with the GOTY list.

Asura's Wrath only $18...but Yakuza Dead Souls only $15.... Patrick played that didn't he?

The truth is it was always a "joke" that they discuss these games without all of them having played all of them. Last year's tie breaker being Ryan..who hadn't even played the damn game lol. This year Patrick being like "oh, that game that you just described to me, I know I would like that, that is the number 7 game of the year". As others have said, in the end, no one really cares. Not even the crew.

Yeah, but it's cyberpunk, so it makes Jeff cream his pants.

Why? Out of the six guys on the final GOTY panel, Forza was fifth on two of their lists and 6th on another. ZombiU for example was only on Patrick's list and was 3rd. Which game looks like it is a better representation of what the Giant Bomb guys thought was a top ten game of the year?

Story/fun-nonsense aside, NO ONE has good things to say about Dead Soul's gameplay.

Asura... eliminates.... that potential for problem.

I'd say go with Asura, or a mainline Yakuza game.

Edit: Patrick's summary for Y:DS.

I'm just randomly browsing Amazon's list and there are so many recently released games at $15ish it's crazy. I have 13-2 on the way any day now so I don't even know why I want to add another game to the backlog.. (common problem, I know) but yeah I'd most likely grab Yak4 if anything. I played 1-2 and Kenzan YEARS ago so I kind of had the itch. Thanks for finding his thoughts though haha.

But what about the games that some of them didn't play? Jeff made a strong argument with Syndicate, since the others probably played it for just a few hours, and they think it deserved to be on the list. The list shouldn't be there for exclusively mutual games, or else that would be boring. Seeing ZombiU, Sleeping Dogs and Syndicate, even if they didn't like those games, is exciting.

Patrick saying something blatantly wrong as fact without bothering to fact check, no way.

Chivalry is going to be 2013's 2012 game of the year.

yeah i was listening to him fight for it and was shaking my head constantly, had a totally different experience with it. was not a great game

It was okay, but terrible for Starbreeze standards. These are the devs of Riddick and Darkness. It just shows what EA can do to a team.

I'll echo some other comments here by saying that Giant Bomb did a terrific job with Game of the Year stuff this year. I enjoyed every podcast, the parody videos were a lot of fun (my favorite is still Roomies, buttface), and I have to say that I was pushed to try several games after taking all of it in (Frog Fractions: pretty funny. X-COM: phenomenal). There were a lot of shitty things that happened in the industry this year, and a lot of high profile releases fell flat, but content like this helps keep my passion for it all going.

Shouldn't thread title to be changed to teambuttface?

Also all that genuine love for frog fractions and spaceteam makes giantbomb fucking awesome compare to the rest.

I liked it. But it's clear that no one except him did on the crew. Every member was allowed one game to champion, I suppose.

Except Alex. Poor Hotline Miami.

Spelunky came out several years ago.
Also this year. It got robbed.

Well, there are picking THEIR games of the year, not anyone else's.

of course, but it seemed like it was only just jeff trying to get on there. surprised to see everyone back off and drop some of those other games and go off what jeff had to say about it

yeah lol, he was pretty clear on how much he digged hotline but got nowhere

It's hard to make a strong case against a game that you haven't played, and I don't think that almost anybody but Jeff actually had played Syndicate at the time of the podcast's recording. He made a strong case for it, and then most of them said "yeah, I probably would enjoy something like that."

"You know Forza Horizon is pretty amazing, the atmosphere and open world is really nice, the cars handle great and the leaderboard stuff is clever."
"Yeah I had a lot of fun with it too, made me play and enjoy a car game"
"It is a great game, it's their first game and no one expected it to be good considering what Forza usually does"
"3 of us have it on their personal list"

...

"So let's cut it!"

Paraphrasing of course, but that's my biggest gripe...
