Damn. I always walk into this thread every year and become super jealous. This is my first year I actually have a place of my own though. It just doesn't compare to some of these set ups, but what the hell. I'll post some images anyway! Hopefully somebody will like it. Pictures are from November, hence the old calender!

I agree- I love the sleeker, modern look of people like Tabris and Buttons' apartments. Clutter sucks.
We keep all the rooms in our apartment clean and clutter-free, although I do have a small office room that I use as my "nerd room," filled with all sorts of embarrassing, perverted nerd crap. I limit myself to just that room and refuse to let anything spill out into another room.
Only thing different from 2012 is the keyboard, chair, and joystick. Cables are a little better too, but still need improvement. I really wish I had a triple monitor setup but I'm probably going to wait for the oculus rift now.
Nice setup Buttons. I love the clean look and it doesn't look sterile at all to me.

Old picture from when I was in college, but I'm still rocking the same gaming pc. Bought it in 2007, and I've played The Witcher 2, Crysis 2, and Metro 2033 at the highest graphical settings at 1440x900.

What makes my setup so lifeless? I have a cat, a bonsai tree and a bamboo tree in my picture, that's a lot of life! Well actually the last two are fake but haha, you get my point.
There's also the borderline between "homey" and "look at this fucking mess" - no offence to anybody falling under the latter. I'm referring to people who don't make the effort to organize their things. It doesn't have to look like something from an IKEA ad, but it also doesn't have to look like your typical "gamer" room. There's a balance you can get.
NHL-GAF wants to make your home into our base of operations. Prepare for a siege, Tabris.

Dell Studio XPS 13" screen (can run Minesweeper at 720p30 - seriously, it's like being there) and Dell Inspiron 9300 with a 17" screen for when I want the full Imax experience. Both have stereo sound.
My game collection (awaiting delivery of a wall-mounted rack to keep them organised)
Upstairs for racing.
(Note to self: don't rip up existing flooring if you can't be bothered replacing it over a year later, doofus)

I'm setting up a new room in a new house as well; my rig should arrive here soon and purchased a u2412m to compliment my 27" in portrait
Pretty small desk though atm so the entire width of it will be covered in pixels, going to get a L desk and a new chair whenever I can

Although I understand the style you are going for, I think it's the lack of color that is causing people to say it's lifeless and sterile. White walls with black and white furniture. Lack of wall artwork (although I love the large surrounding windows with great view). Maybe a nice rug in the living room would make the place look cozier?

I think it looks dynamic and inviting. The most lifeless rooms in these kinds of topics for me are the generic American rooms with beige carpet and beige slabs of wall with almost no decoration.
That happens anytime with modern design - simplicity, clean lines, and especially when using light colors can make your space seem really sterile.

I'm personally partial to the modern industrial look myself. Although a few pops of color here and there wouldn't hurt.
edit: Just saw the pics of Donkamio's pad and really like that one. Well done.

It doesn't make a gigantic difference. If it sounds good to them, that's all matters. Just like people getting LCD's over plasma's.
I need to clean up the coffee table a little...
Gaming PC on the left, classic console TV in the middle, and the newer stuff on the right HDTV. Coffee table is blocking out the SNES, Genesis, and N64 under the SDTV.
Not pictured: cardboard square I sometimes shove in front of the window directly behind the HDTV to block out the evil sun.

I have wall artwork on every wall where there isn't a window or tv. 2 of those pictures show wall artwork. And Vancouver is my "wall artwork"
But in terms of colour, the theme is white / black with accents of wood, green, and red.

I'm nitpicking here but the artwork next to the door is too small. =p And both artwork just adds more black and white. Even your cat is black and white LOL. The area still look too bare, especially the TV section.
I like how Donkamio's pad has a nice pop of color to breakup the monotonous of white everywhere. The oriental rugs, plus bookshelf filled with colorful books/artwork and the multiple artwork above it make the place more warm and inviting. The maroon brownish accented back wall filled with colorful artwork also adds to his place as well.
Don't get me wrong, I actually like your setup. Just trying to answer your initial question.

The dark reds and browns plus dim lighting make strikevillain's setup much more cozy and inviting, IMO. Tabris' space looks really sleak, but I would never want to live in a space like that. Same with chittagong's
