Well that's...weird. At first blush he's not too impressive except in a "I want to find a way to break this" way. But I have a feeling I'm underestimating him because I don't find the idea of a giant indestructible-vanilla beater that powerful, same reason OG Ajani's ultimate never impressed me.

My first impression is that he's actively terrible and your four mana is better spent in many other places. But I'm going to sit and think about it for a while before giving a real opinion.

Also, what's with the trend of Planeswalkers that do nothing on their +1 except advance to their ultimate? First Vraska, now this?

Love the art on the new Gideon.

Don't think he's very good, but I'll probably try to run him if I pull one anyway.

[EDIT] Looks like you guys missed the arcana spoilers:

I'm with you on the "I don't think he's as good as he looks" train.

New Gideon will preorder for 50 bucks, and will be 15 dollars by the time the set actually comes out, like Vraska was.

He's unplayable garbage

I guess in the right match up he gets his counters really quickly. Come right out the gate and say your opponent has 3 creatures, you have an 8/8 creature ready for next turn. I would play him in limited. I know a lot of jideon fanboys that are going to be pissed though.

Consuming Aberration is EDH and Type 4 loveliness.

Consuming Aberration and Lazav seem like good friends.

People love milling, he's a fun beater in a mill deck.

I love milling, even though it's generally awful

Yeah, he looks good, but my friend with the mill deck probably isn't going to run him because he has more efficient ways to mill and he never ever attacks or worries about being attacked.

Another crazy Limited card though.

He seems sideboard bound.

I suppose Gideon's not terrible if you play a board wipe before activating his 0 ability.

I could also see someone trying to run him in a turbofog build, but turbofog itself is pretty silly.

Well by turn 5 or 6 when they'd be casting that thing a reasonable mill deck should have milled at least half their library so the thing is like a 20/20. I think the mill aspect is secondary to the loltastic giant smashy smashy aspect.

New Gideon is worse than a Craw Wurm. (not literally, but he's actually pretty close, which is hilariously awful. also, he's the most boring PW design in the game. He's functionally a vanilla creature who doesn't die to Wrath of God or Terror, though he still dies to Dreadbore, Selesnya Charm, Detention Sphere, or your opponent's creatures, and gets laughed at by Azorius Charm).

What's surprising is they made the flagship PW of the set so completely horrible. Him and that angel are on all the promo material, like Jace & Niv Mizzet were last time. Then again, Jace is blue and Gideon isn't, so...

In that situation, keep in mind it's an 8/8 that can't block, can be turned into a Grizzly Bear if not just killed by those 3 creatures, and can be chumped by a 1/1 token.

He's actually better in an aggro deck against creature light decks - his +1 won't give him a lot of counters, but at least he'll be a vanilla 5/5 for 4 who doesn't die to Supreme Verdict. Still mediocre and there are probably better things to be doing.

Gideon's artwork is amazingly sexy (as usual, Gideon my waifu <3) but he's kinda... un-impactful? Indestructible chumpable beater that takes turns to grow sure but with shit like Garruk Relentless you can at least get a beast or kill a weak critter before he kicks the bucket.

I like the new Gideon. I don't want tournament staples at Mythic Rare because it makes them a bitch to afford. This Gideon is a reasonable, fun aggro beater but will get shat on because he wasn't a control deck savior like his original version.

My only disappointment is that he follows the same borrowing good/better/best abilities formula that just about every other PW has followed. OG Gideon and Sarkhan the Mad were so cool, imo, because they expanded on the design space of PWs and showed some potential that we've seen little of since then (though Karn and Garruk Relentless came close).

Non-impactful is the best word to describe him. Lets say you play him onto a board against 2 2 power creatures. He comes down and activates up to 7 loyalty. Then your opponent attacks him down to 3 loyalty, and all of a sudden, your indestructible 3/3 doesn't look all that impressive.

That's why I think he plays a finisher role against control in an aggro deck. Sure, he only gets 1 counter off his +1, but he's an indestructible beater that is hard to remove... Except for selesnya charm, tragic slip, Azorius charm, any bouncer...

Not that I'd play him

I keep trying to think of how he can be awesome. If gideon's second ability also said something like "all creatures able to block gideon must do so" I could kind of see the potential there. but it doesn't...meh. Maybe if there was a way to get him to 15+ counters in one turn.

Right, I mean like...he'd be good against my Saproling deck if I had 70 tokens out...

One would assume you have blockers to keep him from taking damage.

I still feel his biggest potential comes from being able to avoid board wipes. You play and pump him straight away. Block and damage that comes his way until your next turn, then play a Supreme Verdict (or other wipe) and creaturize him. He'll likely be a 5/5 or more up against an empty board.

He's definitely not competitive, but I don't think he's quite as useless as people seem to think.

Creature - Fish Mutant
Unblockable
Evolve
0/4

The angel might see play in a Junk Tokens/Midrange deck but I doubt it. No the 0/4 Evolve and Unblockable hmmm that could find a home somewhere.

When I first read the new Gideon I figured they went for a new 2 mana planeswalker like Tibalt, imagine my surprise when I found out he cost 4.

What an awful card.

I don't think Gideon is anywhere near Tibalt in terms of awfulness. He might not be Jura but I'll at least give him some playtime to see how it does in an actual game scenario.
