Dredd has the most memorable villain death scene in forever.

Judge Dredd: Was wondering when you realized you'd forgot your helmet...
Cassandra Anderson: It interferes with my psychic abilities...
Judge Dredd: [grunts] figured a bullet would do that.

As someone who never saw Dredd but wanted to, I'm glad it's releasing next week so I can finally getting around to seeing if the hype is worth it. It sounds fucking rad.

Hard to say what your experience will be like - most of us saw it in theatres before there even was any hype, so it caught most of us off-guard. Now it seems to have attained some cult status and has hype surrounding it.

Hope you don't feel let down.

I hope you have a good sound system though, because Dredd himself sounded so deliciously HEAVY in theatres.

Also its kind of interesting how too many cooks sunk GL. I don't think it's just the number of cooks, but moreso the diametrically opposed views that each cook has on the meal. I mean, Campbell has directed two great James Bond films, and those movies are also classic examples of having a large number of cooks involved on the creative level, but I think the difference between Bond and GL is that the Bond cooks all come to an agreement on the recipe.

Okay, enough food analogies :P

The problem was Campbell really had no clue or investment in the character. So he was just doing as he was told. Make it like this, make it like that. The problem was that there was no one helming it who truly loved and got the character, be that Hal or GL as a larger concept.

The film was totally off tonally, and you can tell that was from too many cooks. Make it like Iron Man! Make it for kids so we can sell toys! Make it dark like Batman!

We ended up with a film that took itself waaay too seriously, and also not seriously enough.

My kids were sooooo pumped to see it, and it was too scary for them. And it was too over the top and cheesy in other areas, so my wife didn't like it.

I honestly would've preferred the Jack Black film, because then I could tell people, "Well they didn't put Oa, or the Corps, or the Guardians in it..." But as is, they included just enough to screw any chances of us getting a decent GL film any time soon.

On an unrelated note, the Green Lantern animated series is really good.

Relating back to Man of Steel, I at least get the impression that David Goyer, and Zack Snyder are both fans of Superman, and they get the appeal. So already they are a step above the entire Green Lantern production in my eyes.

Go in with low expectations, but if you can't help but be hyped a bit I'd recommend watching with some like-minded friends. Go in expecting Die Hard levels of action and grit.

the last quarter of Raid was terrible. Too much of a good thing can get boring.

that last 3some fight was the worst of the movie, very flat.

That scene was literally the first time I ever felt exhausted after watching a fight scene. I mean...it just kept fucking going, I kept thinking "okay, one of these guys would have just dropped dead by now" about half way through. Definitely a case of over-indulgence.

Dredd is action for the sake of action as well. The fighting choreography in The Raid shits all over Dredd's. I enjoyed both movies, but c'mon.

oh wow. dredd was one of the worst movies I saw in the cinema this year. It doesn't even have a plot. and the violence, wasn't even THAT gratuitous.

I felt bad for karl urban but its good he still has star trek. The roles' almost a career killer. wanted my money back.

I'm wondering why we haven't gotten a Superman version of this image.

The variation in symbols over the years is pretty interesting. Including the S that Snyder chose for this movie, which is like a combination of an old '40s Superman, and the logo on the posters for Superman: The movie.

The closest it comes is this page, an annotated history of how the shield has shifted over the years.

I'm really digging the Man of Steel shield. It's got that alient influence and 40s/50s feel, but it doesn't feel dated or anything. There's a hint of medieval regality to it, too. It looks proud 'n tough.

I was pulling my hair the day WB announced Snyder. Since then, there's been pretty much nothing but good news from the movie. The entire cast and crew, the trailers, the look of the movie, etc. Snyder is still worrisome, but both trailers make the film look exceptionally different and superior to his other works.

I'm cautiously optimistic. It's looking good.

Didn't people think this of Watchmen? Which I loved.

"there was too much kung fu in this kung fu movie! i think i will stick with steven segal movies"

It looks too dark and I don't think it works with Superman. The character is meant to be a contrast from the darkness of Batman and Gotham City. They still could of told a good story with bright colours. Not sure I am feeling it but then again I find Superman the most boring superhero so I may not be the target audience. Looking forward to Wolverine though, need to wash my eyes after that god awful origin film.

As far as i'm aware the shooting was done and the film was originally for release summer 2012. Then they delayed it a year and shot new stuff, presumably in response to Avengers mega success

What? The film was never going to be released last summer, it was originally slated for December. The delay to June had nothing to do with The Avengers, and I don't think they even did any additional shooting, it was just about 3D conversion and playing around with the release of date of The Hobbit.

I'm not totally convinced that last December was their ideal release date for Man of Steel anyway, they may have simply been rushing it to that date to get out before 2013 in case anything with the Superman rights went south. Since WB ended up keeping everything in that case, they weren't pressured to have the movie done for a certain time.

Just watched Watchmen : directors cut last night and people may dislike the movie but it was shot beautifully .
Also one thing that i like about snyder movie is that even tough they are CG heavy they never look out of place. The whole world is built that way that cg thimgs fit right in unlike many other movies

While promoting his new series ‘Da Vinci’s Demons,’ screenwriter/director David S. Goyer spoke to Access Hollywood about bringing Superman to the big screen with this summers ‘Man of Steel.’ As Goyer also had a helping hand in the Blade trilogy and Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, he talked about the challenge of adapting what he refers to as “the Granddaddy of all the Superheroes” for ‘Man of Steel,’ “I’m really proud of it. I never thought I would be doing a Superman film, but I think the only way to top myself, or ourselves on Batman is to tackle Superman – who’s kind of the Granddaddy of all the Superheroes. He’s trickier, you know? It’s kind of easier doing a dark character who doesn’t have any superpowers, but I’m really proud of what we’ve done and I can’t wait for people to see it.” Goyer added,“I think the movie [Man of Steel] is going to be the right movie for the times. I mean, I’m happy that that movie is coming out this summer, because I think it’s the kind of movie that the world needs right now. He’s an unabashed hero.”

I still can't get hyped for this movie. No matter how they dress it up or make it grimdark its still the same fucking story we've had over and over again. Maybe if there is a sequel I'll see that at the theater, this will just be a netflix rental if that.

Kind of reminds me of the Smallville writers/creators talking about how, pre-9/11 a lot of the press for the Smallville was focused on "Who gives a shit about Superman these days?". Then post-9/11 their tune completely changed to "We need heroes", and when Smallville premiered in October of 2001 it broke all viewership records that the WB had at that point.

Am I the only one who doesn't see any "dark" in the movie (except for the color palette, maybe)? It's very serious and all, but it doesn't come across as dark to me.

People just like to make a big stink about the film taking itself seriously. If it's not wise-cracking and fun like Marvel's films, it's automatically trying to be "dark" and "edgy". It's a miss-use of a word that some people on GAF like to throw around, like "hipster" and "bomba".

Not dark, maybe a bit cynical, but I'm sure the movie just wears that as a mask. It's probably nice and "aw shucks" Kent optimism and goodness at its core. A brooding Superman is not a very fun one. At that point he's just a stubborn, incorrigible old man. It's like a grumpy Captain America, without all the patriotism.

Having read the script I can say its no more the same origin story as Batman Begins was the same Origin story we have had over and over again for Batman.

You read the script? Without giving too much away, what did you think of it?

Loved it. I thought it did a great job of making superman "real" It was a pretty tight script too with not much downtime. Its clearly influenced by more recent superman books like Birthright.

Only have one real problem with the script
Pa Kent still dies. Its one of the things I like about newer origin stories for Superman. I think Pa Kent is a great character to explore and I don't feel you need him to die to have Clark make the decision to become Superman.

I see it as a serious Superman film. The same as the Batman trilogy.

Glad to hear you liked it.
Saw Pa Kent's death coming so I don't even feel bad about reading the spoiler. I agree I wish they would let him live, but hopefully this means Ma Kent will have a larger role. She gets shifted to the background often, I feel.

I think his death should be done in a way to show that he can't save everyone.
