Clapping is done for the benefit of the artist or performer, whom are not present at a typical movie screening. Unless you're clapping for the projectionist, I don't understand why you would do it. It's obviously a cultural difference.
This is simply not the case. That is the primary purpose and intent of applause but not necessarily the only one.
Welp I catching up with this thread and about to post this. I have never witnessed anybody clapping at the movies. Do you guys clap at home after watching a tv movie? After the 8 o'clock news perhaps?
As Karkador pointed out: ever cheered while watching a sporting event on TV with friends?

Not where I live.

We clap at stage plays but never, ever at a cinema. We also don't cheer or boo before, during or after the event. And if a baby cries, there are trained staff on point ready to shake it to death.

Do you live in No Fun Town in the state of Get Off My Lawn?

Just as Japanese people must wonder how people could possibly enjoy a noodle dish unless they were loudly slurping, so you wonder how we can enjoy a movie without applauding, cheering etc.

Not while watching fictional sports, no.

Yeah, but I can do that without pretending that there is no reason for why one may act differently than I.

I'd rather ask.

I'm not wondering why you can, just wondering why it's seen as something so horrific.

That, in my humble opinion, is a completely different scenario. I'll cheer and cuss at the tv because the outcome is important to me. The joy after scoring a last minute equaliser in a football match or watching the opposition miss a spot kick will never come close to watching a movie. I'm not too involved with the movie or the outcome. I'm just sitting here, waiting to be entertained.

Relevant: I had fun once and it was awful.

Clapping isn't horrific. What's horrific are those people who think the whole theatre needs to hear their oh-so-witty comments.

This is the real problem.

When dudes think I paid to go see the movie to listen to their shitty jokes.

Well that's an odd response. Is it bad because the recipient of the applause isn't present or because the content being applauded isn't real? ;)

On this I hope we can all agree (unless the movie is MST3K-level bad).

Giving proof to how much credibility I have as a gamer, I did not realize my Vita was upside-down until after taking the photo. *laughs*

Man I already said it was a cultural difference in the first post. It's not my fault that yours sucks and mine is super awesome.

Getting into a sporting match such that people go "ooohhh!!!!" or something when there's a tight game in real time is not strange, but if somebody applauded while watching a cricket game on TV that would be fucken wierd bro. There are two different things going on here, the first of which is the appropriateness of clapping for nobody in particular, which is apparently normal for you guys but not for us, the latter is keeping your mouth shut during a movie and not cheering, booing etc during it. Watching a sporting match is not subject to the same norms as sitting in a cinema watching a movie is.

Gosh, is it possible that you actually think I don't realize this?

Point: the purpose of the concepts Karkador linked (applauding at the end of a movie in a theater or cheering while watching sports with friends) is the same. It's an expression of emotion made more fun by being able to do so communally.

You said if someone applauded while watching a cricket match it'd be weird. If they're alone, I agree (though during games with particularly high stakes I can't prevent myself from indulging the weirdness). If they are with friends watching together and clap after a run is scored (they are called runs, right?) is it still just as strange?

Two further things:
1) I specified that it is not appropriate for all types of films. Examples of applause I have enjoyed: The Avengers midnight showing, Inception, Les Miserables on Christmas Day. I don't think I would react quite so favorably to applause as the credits rolled after Sophie's Choice.
2) Keeping your mouth shut during a movie is important to me too, and not really relevant- I thought we were talking about applause at the end. Since you brought it up though, I guess I don't mind the audience reacting to funny or awesome moments (I cannot overstate how fun it was being in a theater of fans at the "Hulk Smash Loki" scene) with brief laughter or cheers. Does that kind of stuff bug you as well?

What is a Vita? You mean my Super PSP?

I basically use the thing for PSP games and don't regret it. Love the PSP <3
I bought one for this purpose too. Except Jeanne D'Arc isn't a downloadable title anymore and that was one of the games I was really looking forward to. :(

I always go to a film in the last week to ensure there's as few other patrons as possible. I decided to see Skyfall the week it came out, and people started laughing during the scene where Silva caresses Bond's inner thigh during the "interrogation". People making noise during films really annoys me. Except singing the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song during The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie opening. That's totally necessary.

The thing I miss most about being around my siblings all the time was watching shows/movies with them, cause god damn, my brothers are funny as shit.

This is true, all four of y'all together is non-stop laughter.

Me and my best friend go to sparsely populated showings of movies near the end of their run and sit away from everybody else so we can do live riffing on the film without bothering people. We also rent games and movies we know are bad just to make fun of them together. It's good bonding time.

If they're alone, I agree (though during games with particularly high stakes I can't prevent myself from indulging the weirdness). If they are with friends watching together and clap after a run is scored (they are called runs, right?) is it still just as strange?

Yes, that is still just as strange.

Laughter is an involuntary response and is thus normal when something particularly funny happens.

Don't come to California either, where fun is allowed ;)

Yeah, but no one has it because it costs too much.

Hey don't count us out, we're broke as hell too.

Also while maybe I'd agree with "okay to clap in a theater" here, I... wouldn't recommend it. I mean, I'd err on the side of not clapping unless you want to embarrass yourself for liking whatever romantic comedy you and the ladies happen to be watching. It's a very rare thing.
