Rumors that Netflix was offering ISPs access to higher quality streams in return for partnering on distribution surfaced early last year, and were followed by the announcement of its Open Connect CDN network in June. Now the full picture has been revealed with the company's announcement of "Super HD" 1080p and (in the US only, for now) 3D streaming, which comes to its customers at no extra cost, but only on certain devices plugged in to to Open Connect partner ISPs. The hardware list includes PS3, WiiU, Windows 8, Roku, Apple TVs as well as Blu-ray players and smart TVs with 1080p support.

According to Netflix, most of its international streams are already going through compatible ISPs, however the only major participants announced in the US currently are Cablevision and Google Fiber. Watch Instantly customers can see if their ISP on the list by visiting the Super HD page and, if it isn't, they're encouraged to call and ask for it. Netflix's ability to manage bandwidth will be increasingly important and the ISPs customers access its with and along with those rankings, "Super HD" is an important lure to get them to play ball.

We've been seeing some 3D ready titles pop up on the service in the last few weeks and now viewers can access titles like Art of Flight, Immortals and several titles from 3net. According to Dan Rayburn of Streaming Media Blog, the higher-quality encodes are targeted for 7 Mbps, while 3D streams top out at 12 Mbps. One question that lingers is how this quality bump aligns with recent changes some customers have noticed (if X-High suddenly reappears...), but until we get our eyes on the higher quality streams it's hard to tell. Reed Hastings says he wants all Netflix customers served by Open Connect (whether via colocated appliances or peered at common internet exchanges) as soon as possible -- we'll see if Comcast, Time Warner, Verizon, AT&T and the rest have a similar dream.

I thought it was odd when I turned on my PS3's Netflix app and saw a 3D category and a "Super HD" option, but it worked and looked great. They were mostly 3D documentaries but a couple of 3D movies were there, too.

Go here to see if your ISP is on board.

Cablevision and Google Fiber?! NOooooooooooooooooooo!

I guess Comcast is probably down far on the list :(

Edit: If my connection can handle the highest tier Vudu stream, I'm sure it could this Netflix one too.

Ahahahaha, yeah bitches. It has fucking begun. Hurry up the rollout here in KC Google, goddamn. I'm feeling all 1% up in this bitch lately.

Edit: Oh, and screw Verizon.

Surprised regional ISP Knology seems to be on there. Sounds great.

I don't have any caps, but if some of the 3d films top out at 12mbps, then those with caps might have some trouble.

Elisa & Saunalahti from Finland seem to be supported as well ( there's a superHD site in Finnish.) Need a faster internet tho :(.

How about they let us choose a better bitrate instead of the shitty progressive streaming they have now? I have a good connection and want good quality video from the beginning, instead of having to wait for it to switch over on the stream.

Why not use ctrl+alt+shift+s to open the streaming option and forcing the bitrate from there?

hmmm this is available to me, but I canceled my netflix long ago. won't even consider signing up again until they put more 1080p with 5.1 track and subtitles on most of their content. it's been a couple of years since i had a subscription, so they may have done this already. but i remember when they would have newer recently released movies they would more often then not be SD versions with 2.0 audio and no subs

http://gigaom.com/2013/01/08/netflix-3d-superhd-open-connect/ Seems to explain it better...

The catch: Both 3-D and Super HD are only available to customers whose ISPs are using Netflix’s own Open Connect CDN.

The company has even built a page that allows you to check whether your ISP is already using Open Connect, and suggests that you should give the ISP a ring if they don’t. In other words: It’s enlisting its customers in its push to replace third-party CDNs with its own delivery network, effectively turning a complex peering war that has been largely happening behind the curtains into a catchy consumer issue.

Wonder how this will effect it if I use a VPN or Unblock-us

"Your internet provider is ready for Super HD!"

Well done Sky! Now to see if the so-called "20 mb/s" broadband that you provide me with can actually run the damn thing. Somehow I doubt it, as I get nowhere near 20 mb/s.

I have cablevision! fuck yeah 1080p netflix! can't wait to check this out when i get home

edit: I just saw the 5mb/s download requirement. I don't think my optimum cable has ever gone higher than 2mb/s. Butts.

I have Cablevision... and I have a 3D monitor (picked up that Sony for 100 bucks on black friday)

I guess I should resub to Netflix

Quite a bit of the selection is HD. Not sure abuot 5.1/subtitles. I think the movies you were referring to were the extinct Starz line, which had awful picture/sound quality.

Is there any way to check quickly which content is available in "Super HD"? Just tried a random programme and the highest selectable rate when using Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S was 3000 - I'm sure I've seen up to 3600 on some shows even before this Super HD announcement.

TekSavvy in Canada checks out for this Super HD business.

Your Internet Provider is part of the Open Connect network, a free partnership with Netflix. Netflix will automatically play movies and TV shows in Super HD on a supported device if your connection is fast enough.

Apparently both Apple TV (1080p version) and PS3 support this. Will see how it looks this eve.

Nope. Not that I really expected it considering the tiny amount of stuff we got on Netflix here in Denmark, it's kind of a shit service.

Yea for Knology. It hurt when my 2 year discount ran out but this eases the pain a little.
