I have to say I always look at the thread in bemusement. As a classical guitarist I've had my guitar for nearly 20 years. I do have a backup but there's just not the same focus on gear in the classical realm as there is in the non-classical ones.

When people find I majored in guitar they're like "How many guitars do you have? You must have a ton." When really all I need is one.

The internet has really fuelled the myth that spending money on gear is going to produce instant benefits to how good you sound "tone".

If I got rid of all the overlap I could get down to 5 or 6 instruments (have 11 guitars and a banjo). I really do want seperate acoustic and electric guitars for bottleneck and fretted-only playing, it is just easier (aside from storage), and then I frankly like having electric guitars with different scale lengths and pickups. I couldn't even pick a favourite.

I have been totally happy with my guitars for the past several years, though, and immune from the internet's tempting ways. I did make the mistake of building a guitar though, a few years ago. I think that rabbit hole is like tattoos: hard to do the first, harder to stop at one.
