An Exclusive Look At Need for Speed Carbon on the Wii

Yay for EA. Doing a better job with Wii than Ubisoft so far, I'd play this new Need for Speed over that warmed over Gamecube racer any day of the week.

Not simpler .. More immersive .. More intuitive .. Somthing besides sitting there pressing X constantly .

I wonder if NFS Carbon is compatible with the Ubisoft wheel attachment. That would be perfect. :)

It's just a plastic shell. It can't not be compatible.

Cmon now, Ubi has two major exclusives for Wii. Madden looks good, but EA said themselves it's based on the Cube version. And we've seen next to nothing about this game..

I'm glad they've put in multiple controls though, already thought they where going to force one of the lousy ones on us.. In this perspective EA is doing better than Ubisoft, which is pretty much forcing the controls they think are best..

Focus groups ftw. How does one become part of a focus group anyway?
You just gotta get on a marketing company's list. I get calls all the time about random focus group shit. Sometimes the requirements are really random. I got on the list by doing a survey about flashlights at a mall. Then I also got called about other ones like for Ebay and stuff. That one I got paid like $100 bucks!

Just because the Wii remote *can* make things simpler, doesn't mean it has to. In fact, I'm most looking forward to games which serve those of us who clearly aren't turned off by complex control schemes.

All the current Wii FPS controls look like shit, but one day someone is going to make the goldeneye controls gone mental - nunchuck analogue for look, wiimote dpad for lateral motion, pointer for targeting on screen, nunchuck tilt for leaning. And it's going to be tricky at first, but then amazing amazing. I've got the Club Nintendo TV-Wiimote right here as I write this and it just makes me grin with how great it could, and hopefully will, get.

If every developer out there decides that they are going to dumb down, simplify, and effectively hobble established games, it'll fail. But they won't after a while. New, accessible games should strive to be easy and unthreatening, but genres and series that were born over the last twenty years of evermore complex control schemes shouldn't shy away from being more complex again.

One of which (Red Steel) looks average at best, Rayman minigames and then a whole lot of shovelware? No thanks. At least EA are putting some effort into their ports.

Holy shit, did you just badmouth Rayman? A game being made by one of the greatest geniuses of the industry? I will not stand for your Michael Ancel bashing, sir. I will not stand for your lack of faith and lack of good taste.

LaPierre's team worked closely with Nintendo of America on additional the controller configurations. "People like options, and we felt motivated to provide them," he says. "We found three that worked and 20 that didn't." He also added that EA's most recent focus group on this title preferred the Wii version to those on PS3 and 360 because "when they were in control, they felt like they were in control, and when they were out of control, they felt like they were out of control."

Sorry fanboys . Wii wins this one .

Of the alternatives, we liked the first approach the best, because during our brief test, it felt just as comfortable as using a more typical gamepad, while adding just the right amount of gesture to the experience. In fact, we preferred it vastly to the default controls, which use the Wii remote alone as a steering bar. Even though all of the Wii racing titles use this approach, and it certainly works, we've never found it to be particularly comfortable.

So one of those alternate controls might be a winner

WTF is with people? Those controls make me want to play the game. I'm talking about the 'complex' ones. Sounds cool, and I rarely ever have interest in EA games. The ExciteTruck type controls don't sit with me too well (maybe I'm too used to steering in games with the left hand), but I want to try them all out.

multiple control schemes = good
especially for the Wii, where different people will most likely have a different take on what better Wii controls is.

If this were nintendo putting those controls options it'd be all "ooh innovative" "ooh fun" "ooooh versatility" "ooooh jizz on my face".

<---goes back to the ot.

:lol :lol :lol

This is my favorite racing franchise. Please allow me to map buttons and actions how I see fit. My personal choice would be the excitetruck setup.

The graphics are decent, although nothing the Xbox couldn't do just as well.

The controls...I dunno. I'm glad that their focus group liked it, but I'm wondering how well it'll hold up after, say, a month. I wonder if you'll honestly look back and be happy that they changed the controls to accomodate the Wii controller. I hope so.

I REALLY like the sound of some of those control schemes.... In the latest gran turismo, i play with both analog sticks most of the time. this sounds even more intuitive while offering just as much control. I was a bit worried that all driving games on Wii would end up playing like excite truck and i only like that kind of gameplay in futuristic racers... I want analog control over everything in my normal racing games.

Thumbs up.... I haven't bought a need for speed game in years, but i might buy this one if the reviews are good.

edit// and i have to echo the shock that others have shown in this thread over EA's stellar looking wii support. It's seems like there were really creative people hiding at EA and the wii has awakened them or given them a forum to experiment.

Let me correct you then, besides the obvious "feel" difference, it is supposed to provide BOTH a more simple pick-up-and-play gameplay AND open up even more complex gameplay scenarios than before. I'm sure Mario Galaxy will be one of the first games to introduce creative interactivity with the surroundings - puzzles and action sequences that require moving objects with the wiimote, a little bit of multitasking, etc.

Where's early? How did I jump over the gun to get there?
Well, you looked at a few images and started complaining about the lack of a 16:9 mode. It's not like the control option screens said something like "Tilt the remote forward to accelerate, in this 4:3-only game."

Whats bothering me, is the lack of using twoor more wiimotes.

Why not utilize two of them during single, or two player? One stick could be the steering, and other the gas and brake.
There's an image of one that uses nunchuk tilt for steering, and remote tilt for gas/brake, which is mostly different from using two remotes in that you don't need two sets of batteries... though two speakers/rumbles is missed.

Sort of. The NFS control image said to have the controller flat, parallel to the ground. I believe the wheel shell we've previously seen has the remote face pointed out from the center of the wheel. So if it was in there and you were playing Carbon as the screens indicate, you'd be holding the wheel parallel to the ground, and tilting the sides up and down... which wouldn't quite be how most of us use a steering wheel.

Yes, especially while the players and developers are new to this and not sure what will be accepted at large.
