Fighting Games Weekly | January 14-20 | Debate over peaches or ponies for EVO edition

I hope Chris G dominates Marvel again. Was the last tourney NCR when he went out and broke down? He better redeem himself on the West Coast.

Chris G beat the west coast's best player twice. Who else stands a chance?

NCR was such a long time ago. Chris doesn't need redemption, just rent money.

Yeah that was mindfuck Chris G. He composed himself soon after and outside of maybe once recently, he never got mindfucked or was a bad sport ever again.

As much as I love Chris G, the only thing I want more is someone finally developing a counter to his lockdown and kicking Chris G to the curb.

Also thanks offcast, ill update OP with the streams later tonight.

Me too. Chris's team currently beats almost the entire cast's team. Modok isn't the answer and Ironman's smart bomb might not be enough. Unless more people adopt the keep away offense and learn to beat it, Souls fists are going to be the future for this game.

Big discussion about Marvel on PS3 going on in twitter featuring Fubarduck, Spooky, James Chen, Alioune and Nerdjosh

Alioune using vanilla analysis footage. WHAT AN ANSWER. UMVC3 =/= vanilla in terms of technical issues.

James Chen using the "the human eye can't even perceive 60 fps anyway so whats the point". ughhhh.

I'm done reading because no one knows what they are talking about.

This doesn't mean anything. Two or three people could donate that amount while fifty people could have made up GG or Melee's donations thus far. Actual numbers tell us more than dollar totals. Just look at DOA. It got a thousand dollar donation from a single source. What are the chances that this source will provide a $1000 dollars worth of people(200 if you go by the $5 minimum)?

Do your homework man. It got $600 from a single source, which was actually put in before the numbers went live. It just wasn't updated in time (takes a couple hours).

The DOA community is certainly not my favorite, but there's no need to make accusations like this when you don't have a clue about it.

Didn't folks used to get banned for saying Smash is a FG in FG threads?
If Teknopathetic is around you can get into trouble. ;)
Apex GF was one of the stupidest Marvel GFs I've ever seen.

I still haven't decided which game I want to put my money in for, I'm thinking 3S or Marvel 2. It would be cool to see CvS2 but that would be a bitch with it not being available on modern consoles, but that may change by the time EVO happens.

Do we have the full details on the update yet? All I've seen are a few vids.

It's coming soon, but they're adding in video uploads to youtube and facebook, more guaranteed shit, new moves, netcode improvements, etc. . . it's going to be a huge update.

Champ said it on his stream 2 weeks prior to Apex. Just like Yipes he said he was going to go PHX for learning purpose. I don't think Chris looked that interested either...

Edit: He also said it on Bum's stream....

I think lost fragment hit the nail on the head as to why the set was actually stupid.

You're missing the point. The reason it played out the way it did was because neither guy wanted to show their cards. It was pretty much a "casual"...

Champ been talking about all his new counter shit and he didn't pull one out, and Chris being the smart guy that he is he probably has a counter to Champ's counter which we didn't get to see either.

They could have given us a better set if Champ played his Ghost Rider team and Chris played his PHX Wright team.

Instead it was exactly what Fragment said it was basically Champ's defense training room session into coin flip. Remember that we already saw this at Seasons Beating? This is not the first time Champ been hit with Chris G soul drain combos.... He went home and bitch about how impossible it was for PHX to beat Morrigan and that he wasn't going to do it again. What happened at Apex? He did it again.

Well, what he said could be the reason why it went down the way it did too.

ok i see what you mean. my bad

I never get this "not showing your cards" shit. It's a major, and if you're saving it for EVO, odds are in six months someone else uses it before you get to do it. In the old smoke-filled days of arcades, that would make sense- but it doesn't make sense in the current age of fighters.

Has anyone actually won a tourney with hidden tech in the past year or two? The only case I know of where it worked was 15 years ago with the Valle CC, and one month later we had a dude in our arcades using it and we figured out counters a week later.

I agree it never works but to play devil advocate on this one, they are not saving it for EVO, but rather SCR which is only 1 week after.

Champ got locked down and soul fisted to death until Phoenix came in, then he flipped a coin. And that was pretty much it. I'm not denying anybody's skill or anything, but it was a pretty fucking dumb set.

Pretty much, its not fun to watch lockdown and the meter waiting game for Phoenix. Its not like the opponent can dodge around morridoom and have a metagame of killing morrigan's assists. Downbacking and dying/gaining meter is anti-hype.

One week makes sense, especially if it's some sort of pattern/response you're saving.

That said, it would be hard to not throw it on reaction, then throw it on reaction a week later. If you were saving something, you should probably use the GF as a lab and throw out something you're not sure about , or try something new (like the Ghost Rider team)

but with yipes and champ case they are seeing if those characters they stuck with can stand a chance in the current meta game so its not about hiding tech.

Not showing your cards for a tournament 1 week after makes no sense when there's money, pot bonus, and a free trip to the Caribbean to be had at Apex.

I think they already earned that trip via sponsers (from what I've heard). It's the EVO points they are saving their cards for.

Pretty much this. And they're both gonna be at SCR where there's another trip on the line. Saving your cards for EVO? A bit too early for that, you need that actual practice against Chris G.

Though I accept Lost Fragment's reasoning for why someone may find it stupid, given the facts Parallax Scroll posted earlier.

Do you seriously believe that the two best players in the world for Marvel are saving their hands for EVO points?

Do you seriously believe that Filipino Champ would fly all the way out to the east coast just to come in 2nd place? Do you seriously believe that he would deliberately try not to win Apex and lose out on all that money just so he could get some points which don't even matter because of how small the pools are at EVO and because of how many people will enter? Nah.

Did you not watch Bum's stream?

http://www.twitch.tv/bum1six3/b/355864622 *Around 3:48:19 he gets on the mic*

Either coL or Apex gave Champ a free trip to APEX. He didn't pay for it, so that's why he went to Bum's house to practice. Then he went to APEX to return the favor of the free trip. He even said it so himself on Bum's stream that he came to get match up experience versus the east coast. And all he cared about was SCR.

As for Chris is concern, no one on the east beside Yipes even gives Chris a threat. Chris can half ass his way and still be 1st. Chris played a lot more unusual than he normally did. Go back and watch the commentary every time David thought he was going to snap or TAC he didn't. Chris is a smart guy he was probably trying some new strategies himself. I highly doubt that was Chris G's best.

BT Clockwork vs Drew Grimey – 7PM PST
LxG Infrit vs GDLK Bee – 8PM PST
Combofiend vs BT MarlinPie – 9PM PST
These are all going to be great, but I could care less for Infrit right now.

FChamp
Clockw0rk
Bee
Combo

The Clock/Drew ANC Combo/Kyohei are going to be insane. I believe in Clock again after those sets on FGTV.

I want to see Drew vs. Kyohei
vs. Forward
for the best Viper.

EDIT: KBeast too, I guess.

Apex is an example of how loose "Major" has become. It's a Smash major with FG side events.
