Deadspin: (Notre Dame football player) Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend is a hoax

His explanation for his use of the word "met" doesn't make any sense. If it was an online only relationship, they met thousands of times, so in context that doesn't make sense.

WTF?

The gay thing is the only thing that makes sense to me, but thats a hell of a cover story. Couldnt he just say that they broke up instead of having her get into a car accident and then die of leukemia?

But then he'd be expected to see other girls eventually. Edit: ^^^ that too

Why you guys focusing on the statements by Teo about meeting in person, people lie about online only relationships all the time - its embarrassing

I'm a BC alum so I hate ND but I'll wait till we hear from Teo

Good question

"Practicing Homosexual" is a term often used by Christians when talking about homosexuality and its status as a sin. Many modern Christians accept that homosexuality is an urge or feeling that is natural to a lot of people. However, only acting on those urges is a 'sin.' So, a 'practicing homosexual' is someone who is currently, by their judgment, acting on those urges. Google "Practicing Homosexual," and you'll soon understand what I'm talking about.
I grew up in the most conservative of conservative protestant denominations - Church of Christ (not be confused with United Church of Christ, which is the most liberal of protestant denominations), and even I didn't hear this nonsense. We didn't let women lead prayers!

Eh if they really have chatter between the alleged perps it lends credibility to the Manti victim angle....still a hard sell though

Of course Manri would lie about meeting in person - who admits to an online only relationship?
Why would Manti's brother claim that they had met in person in Hawaii, though?

Gash, are you a ND fan?

LOL Why is there a press conference for this? He is clearly improvising for half of these questions. What the fuck does he know? They must seriously be hiding something for whatever reason. Yes, the situiation is odd, but honestly, making it this big of a fuss is even stranger. There has to be something behind this all.

I grew up in a Southern Baptist church, and I've never heard that term either. Just "homosexuality".

Talon jumps pews!

This is like the episode of the office with the watermark on the paper and Michael puts on a press conference for it.

Because they're trying to make him sound like the victim, but he's probably involved in it.

If these details from the Deadspin story are accurate, the "online" alibi has absolutely no credibility:

"Nov. 28, 2009: Te'o and Kekua meet after Stanford's 45-38 victory over Notre Dame in Palo Alto, according to the South Bend Tribune: "Their stares got pleasantly tangled, then Manti Te'o extended his hand to the stranger with a warm smile and soulful eyes." Kekua, a Stanford student, swaps phone numbers with Te'o.

2010-2011: Te'o and Kekua are friends. "She was gifted in music, multi-lingual, had dreams grounded in reality and the talent to catch up to them" (South Bend Tribune). "They started out as just friends," Te'o's father, Brian, told the Tribune in October 2012. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there."

I can't tell from the Deadspin story - when was the first time Kekua was mentioned in a newspaper story? And - even if the 2009 story is inaccurate, the quote from his own father makes it impossible to believe that it was an online-only relationship.

Like pretty much everyone else in the thread, I just can't fathom why Manti Te'o decided to make this up.

LOL!

But, even if the secretly gay story is true, this still doesn't explain the lengths to which he went to make up details about the girlfriend. If he was trying to hide the truth about being gay, why wouldn't he just make up a story about a "girlfriend from home" and just leave it at that?

Think about it - if he really wanted to hide his sexuality, he could have asked a female friend to pose as his girlfriend on Twitter/Facebook. Who would ever question that?

Instead - he invents this story about the girlfriend dying of leukemia on the day that his grandmother died?

I can't wait to hear more about this story.....
