Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I hate to pick on one thing, but HDMI on 360 was introduced only ~6 months after the PS3 released, the only other console with HDMI out. I don't know how long "too long" is, but in the scheme of things 6 months isn't much at all, and expecting them to do it when there's really no market pressure (shit, I can't remember when I started using HDMI but I'm pretty sure it wasn't at least until '08). Other than that, pretty much everything on your list (except for one or two, but this thread is all about opinions, man) is right on (and hardly controversial ;) ).

Really? It's been a while so I don't remember. I had an early 360 without and then later finally bought an Elite that had it. I guess my frustration was just multiplied because my TV had limited component inputs and I had to use that for the Wii, and meanwhile TVs were adding more and more HDMI inputs.

To add to the thread... I think the Cole McGrath with hair and a cool outfit was the best Cole and I forever spite GAF and the rest of the Internet for its bitching that helped cause Sucker Punch to redesign him into Cole McGeneric.

I really disliked The Walking Dead.

The story portions were fine and the game was at its best when you were led from one story event to the next, having only the burden of making a dialogue choice every now and then thrown upon you.

However when I had to walk around the environments doing some of the most mundane "puzzle" solving and randomly waving the cursor around the screen to see what lights up and what doesn't, is when I often hit Alt+F4 to escape from boredom.

Sure, you can say TWD told a good story, that's up to everyone's own judgement. I just thought that it was an awful game. I can see why people would go crazy about the story but it didn't do it for me though.

Also screw everyone who says The Walking Dead is some grand savior of the adventure game. I had fun playing the Monkey Island remakes - I didn't when playing TWD.

Dragon Age 1 is better then pretty much every rpg this generation, baring the witcher games.

oblivion and skyrim and complete shit, along with fall out 3.

I love wii controls I am trying but i can not go back to traditional control. wii u is a mistake.

The next Zelda is gonna be sort of a letdown because of this. The Wii remote will most likely be an option, but the game won't be designed around it, which means they probably won't be building and improving on Skyward Sword's sword mechanics.

I thought Ninja Gaiden 3 was actually fun and quite good despite it's list of flaws, but it obviously match the greatness of NG1 or NG2. Repetitive you say??? 95% of games are repetitive in general!!!!!!

Resident Evil 6 definitely has issues, but once again, its not as bad as everyone made it out to be. 3's and 4's?? That's a joke.

Most AAA, popular games mainstream are good and all, but sometimes overrated.

Most western RPG's are really good, but most of them look the same to me. Seriously, what's the obsession with the generic medieval style?

Having to have amazing storylines in videogames is overrated. I can understand having them to make things a little more interesting obviously, but too many people seem to only look for that over gameplay. If you want epic stories, maybe read a novel or watch a movie instead on relying on interactive games.

But you're deflecting here, not refusing his statement, yes? Hehehe :)

Well it's no secret that Obsidian has released some really buggy games in the past, even though in many cases it was due to publishers rushing the game or not handling QA properly which is their job, not Obsidian's. No one ever blames them though. You think Obsidian wanted to release Kotor 2 in the shape it was in? Lucasarts just HAD to have the game release before christmas for some reason, even though they had promised Obsidian they would delay it into the next year.

But that being said I've seen bioware and bethesda receive countless passes for their buggy pieces of crap and then they turn around and bash obsidian for it with lower scores. Their games being far more ambitious and complex never matters either. They just don't have the publishing muscle power like EA and Zenimax has.

Skyrim is terrible. The fantasy genre in general, in literature, movies, and games, is terrible.

I like how the Japanese handle fantasy, they mix it up a lot and tend to throw in sci-fi elements... their games actually make you feel like you're in a far-out alien world where anything can happen. Western take on fantasy though, it's either just medieval era + dragons, or outright stolen from Lord of the Rings.

You I don't know about. I would say that the world map in Wind Waker could have been a bit more condensed to facilitate after travel but...the worst? BLASPHEME!

Seriously, the overworld is boring, there's nothing to do except sail to your destination, few dungeons, the triforce fetch quest, treasure hunting... I hate that the game forces you to stay a lot of time in the boat, you can't swim, you can't fight (if you want to it's pointless since the sharks swarm you and one of them hits the boat knocking you out, the only memorable battles are against the octoroks).
And yes! Zelda is not about puzzles, it's about fighting evil, feeling powerful, explore the world and discover secrets. Dungeons should be kinda like the cave of ordeals from TP, filled with enemies, puzzles should be side-quests or minigames.

Not so much an opinion, but I really have an allergic reaction when it comes to the term "Indie". Be it in games, music or whatsoever.
Oh yes, this. I know it's not really the case, but every time I hear the word I can't help but associate it with hipsters.

Mine?...well... get ready... Probably my longest post in a while. Please don't ban me! Lol

Well,to be honest I just dislike Microsoft greatly. They will never get my sympathy. In transitive, that means I rather dislike my Xbox and Games For Windows Live. I avoid games for it if i can because I don't want
to support that company. Just my opinion!

I will never use my distaste for Microsofts gaming persona to hurt other people or champion my gaming opinions irrationally, but there are reasons why I find the company and its console to be an offense to my gaming preferences and in some regards crimes against gaming in general. All companies sin against their market, sometimes badly, in one way or another. But there's hardly a single decision Microsoft has done with Xbox or Games for Windows that i don't hate.

-I hate xbox live. It is an affront to me as a gamer. How can a paid service offer features that ought to be free, and still bombard you with ads, still be p2p based, NOT offer game discounts, etc?
-the integration between live /windows live /Hotmail is absurd and clumsy. I spent all weekend dealing with Microsoft support about a games for Windows Live problem that left my account unusable and they couldn't fix it. Long story. Hate this stupid ass system.
-being forced to pay for live for things like Netflix.
-their obsession toward your credit card is ludicrous. Also, they secretly charged a credit card of my parents for 2 years $200 after I unauthorized them to do so. They said pay up or forfeit my live account. Fuck that. That's now how you treat your customers.
-the fact that it took years to lift XBLA game limits, and there's still a patch data limit, is fucking insane.
-Microsoft points, Wtf.
- 360 should have built in wifi from the start. Not everyone camps next to their modem and they actually tried to justify selling a $100 wifi adapter my fucking goodness.
-the RROD. Seriously? At least they made the repairs free after a couple of years. Better than Sony who still charges people for YLOD
-which brings me to Microsoft specific peripherals. You have to buy a battery pack to charge your controller? And a 360 specific headset? And 360 specific wifi adapter (unless you get a bridge)? And a 360 specific hard drive? And all this shit is expensive because it's proprietary? Fuck you.
-I hate the choice they made to use dvd as the format.
-the xbox dpad is horse shit and the buttons aren't pressure sensitive.
-alienating devs like valve because you hate free DLC.
-hate that it took forever for the console to get HDMI. Crock of shit.
-hate that they make zero effort to innovate with new first party titles, they just want to crap out sequels to halo and gears and Forza every year.
-they ruined Rare.

Just some of the stuff off the top of my head. Every few days something on gaf reminds me of why I hate them.

And indirectly, this company gets way too much success for the crimes it has committed against its customers. The worst part is, people reward all this with their money. Because the majority of the public doesn't care as long as they get their call of duty. It sickens me. I wish Microsoft treated its customers maybe more like Valve.

this.

took the words out of my mouth.

I hate charge shots in most non-Metroid games. Hate 'em. Seeing them in games like Megaman and Contra kills me.

I feel it ruins the nature of those games, wailing on them with your shots and using your timing to get in enough shots fits those types of games more than charge shots which you charge up just running through the level. Then when you see an enemy you can blow him away with one shot, whereas in games without it each enemy is a fresh encounter without the player having an unreasonable advantage.

It doesn't really bother me as much in Metroid because the game is not really focused on difficulty and twitch gameplay. It's more exploration-based.

Not so much an opinion, but I really have an allergic reaction when it comes to the term "Indie". Be it in games, music or whatsoever.
Artsy, pretentious indie platformers are the worst. You can keep your oh so deep and meaningful storyline and gameplay-obscuring bad watercolor style.

I probably have said lot of these already here but whatever:

-HoN is still better than DotA 2 :). Haven't played LoL so no comment on that!

-Trophy and Achievement sets that have a good design enhance the gameplay experience.

-World of Warcraft is one of the best games of all time especially as an social gaming experience. I haven't played some of the older MMORPGs so I just throw it in there that I respect what they have done.

-Zelda games are overrated. I have played Alundra for a good while now and it absolutely destroys Ocarina of Time for example that has aged terribly. I haven't played Link to the Past but if it is anything like Alundra it would be the best game in the series by_far. Twilight Princess and Wind Waker are better games than OOT but they aren't that special either.

-God of War games are overrated. Great visuals but the gameplay just becomes boring. It pales in comparison to DMC or Bayonetta for example.

-Metroid Prime games are overrated and boo hoo hoooring.

-Xenoblade is overrated and overstays its welcome.

-Uncharted 3 is underrated. Uncharted 2 is overrated but still absolutely great game.

-Halo games as much as I'd like to deny it are not that overrated. I haven't played some of the newer games all that much but what I have played of the series and seen how it is going today it is just an excellent shooter and serious fun in co-op.

-ICO is overrated.

-Call of Duty games are excellent casual fun.

-Mario 64 has not aged well and old Crash Bandicoot games are way better played today. That said Mario Galaxy 2 is the best 3D platformer ever made because it actually focuses on platforming. People who say 64>Galaxy are crazy :).

-Wii is absolutely wretched console compared to PS3 and 360. It's not even funny. Galaxy games are pretty much the only thing that lifts it to the ''worth a buy'' category.

-Vita D-pad is ok but not nearly as good as people are making it out to be. PSP d-pad was better and Dualshock d-pad is the best of the 3.

-Rayman Origins is waaa haaa haaayyy better game than NSMB games.

-Xbox live is so bad value it's ridicilous.

-PS+ is so good value it's ridicilous. (ok I guess this isn't even controversial but for comparisons sake ;3)

-PSN is not_slow. I don't know where this idea has come from or if the servers in US are absolute shit. That said the new PS Store is terrible.

-Wii U is the most boring console ever released. Especially compared to Wii which was the most exciting console ever released.

-FF XIII Versus indeed looks pretty avarage at best but I am still excited for it :lol.

I don't like the Playstation Vita. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice piece of hardware, but that's all I get from it, it's a nice piece of hardware. I feel like Sony made the choice of which got a lot of handhelds destroyed, not understanding what a handheld is meant for. Handheld consoles are for quick play sessions on the go. Games that are made for smaller screens and dying batteries. Games that let you stop in the middle of it so that you can do something or charge it, and come back whenever and continue where you left off. It's why pokemon's save system was fucking in genius. The PSV feels like it's trying to be a portable console, which is not what I want.

I have lots of them...

-World of Warcraft is one of the worst games I've ever played. It's an enormous world without anything I can do. The only thing: complete missions. But... Hey... What a shitty missions... They're all the same: "kill 20 spiders", "find 15 stones by killing dwarfs", etc. And you have to pay month by month...

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a good game, but that's all. People that is masturbating with it ignored (and IS ignoring) its first part, Deus Ex, which is maybe the best game ever made or, at least, a masterpiece.

-Mass Effect is a really bad game. No rhythm. No narrative. No ambientation. Every single moment is amazingly slow. If I walk a little, somebody stops my gameplay and starts to talk... "Don't want to hear you, man, I'm supposed to play, not to watch". But there's more! That "selection progress" everybody is talking about is really superficial... Left = good; Right = bad. Once again, people who is masturbating with Mass Effect do that because they ignored (and IS ignoring) classic RPG masterpieces: Baldur's Gate I & II, Planescape, Ultima, Wizardry, Fallout 1 & 2, etc.

-Punch-Out!! (the Wii game) is maybe one of the best designed games I've ever played. Amazing game, amazing difficulty, amazing design... Very good piece.

-Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are mediocre games. Very well designed gameplay, but pretty bad designed levels and enemies. Sidequests are awful. Map is even worse, there's no sense of exploration.

-A Link to the Past is not that good. Level design is good, but not so good as other games in the series or the genre. Oracle series and Link's Awakening had better dungeons and sidequests.

-First Super Mario Galaxy is ridiculously easy. It cannot be considered that good. Its second part is absolutely better, and it is one of the best games ever made.

-id Soft. was legendary WITH John Alfonso Romero. Without him, it was a shit. Carmacks first decided to do Quake III without a campaign, they were afraid because Romero created PER-FECT campaigns in their previous games. And then, Doom 3 and Rage... Awful gamemplay and level design.

The original Far Cry is an excellent game, even the second half.

Is this such a radical opinion? I still believe that FC is better and offered a more rounded and complete experience than either Doom3 or Half Life 2 which was the two other games that I was looking forward to play back in -04. And speaking of HL2. It is a much inferior game to the original HL.

Here's one I know I'm alone on:

Red Faction: Armageddon is an awesome game and is the best in the series.

I just finished The Legend of Zelda (NES) for the first time, ever. In the past I had played it but never finished it on my own.

It's a great game but I don't agree that it's way better than Zelda II. Both of the games are legitimate experiences; they just happen to take different approaches.

Honestly, I've always enjoyed Zelda II. I wouldn't say it's the preferable experience but I don't think it deserves to be the black sheep of the series just because of its change in gameplay.

People need to view the original Zelda with a more critical eye; some of its cheaply-difficult parts (e.g. Level 6 and the "kill rooms" with overpowered Wizzrobes and Like Likes) weighed down the experience, not to mention the overly cryptic hints from the old men and old women scattered about the map and the senseless placement of hidden caves (both in rock walls and in bushes), and annoyances like low bomb carrying capacity.

Far Cry 3, Mirror's Edge (ok this one is kinda normal here on GAF), and Max Payne 3 are some of the best games this generation.

I liked Operation Raccoon City (to some extent) and Resident Evil 5.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter was an alright game.

I was more excited for StarCraft: Ghost than I was StarCraft II.

I used to hold my 360 controller with my index fingers on the bumpers and my middles on the triggers. (Not an opinion or controversial I suppose but still)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the best one in the series and one of the top 3 games made by Eidos.

Dissidia: 012 was fantastic, in my top 3 favorite PSP games (Crisis Core and Birth by Sleep are the other 2).

Bowser's Inside Story was the best Mario and Luigi game.

I'm not a fan of Valve.

I was never that impressed with the Half Life games, even when they released. I found them too easy, too linear, and rather dull. I can say the same for the Portal games. Especially the very unneeded second one.

I feel that they live off the past and rest on their laurels too much to be classed as good developers. People act like they can do no wrong just because they mainly cater to the PC.

*Runs off*

I can't think of the last time they did something to be nice to their customers besides RROD repair, and which is basically expected courtesy for their screw up. Nintendo has their reward club, Sony occasionally gives out free stuff like DLC (PSABR DLC comes to mind) , and I don't even need to defend Valve. But I can't think of a time Microsoft has done something like that, but that just may be my ignorance.

I hope this company gets their shit together next gen.

The 360 now is a much better product than it used to be at least.

I agree 100%

You can't actually mean this?

Co-op was fun, and the controls were pitch perfect, but it's the worst game in the series, not the best.
Oh I certainly wouldn't argue with anyone on this. I just personally love this game the best. Guerrilla was okay and I understand everyone loved the free roaming but I love games that take place inside huge cave complexes (another reason Gears 2 is my fave of the series) so it's really just a personal thing. Plus, the first Red Faction game took place entirely underground as well so I feel Armageddon kind of goes back to the roots, in a weird way. But yeah, I just love the whole huge labyrinth cave complex and aliens. But I completely understand why a lot of people might shrug it off.

Also, I know I'm gonna get looks for this but I thought the facial graphics and animation were pretty damn good in the game and better than a lot of big budget games.

What I really hate is that they tied the Red Faction series into the Saints Row series. I wish they hadn't done that.

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a good game, but that's all. People that is masturbating with it ignored (and IS ignoring) its first part, Deus Ex, which is maybe the best game ever made or, at least, a masterpiece.
Not only that, but I'll add, after playing all three back-to-back, that I think Deus Ex: Invisible War is, overall, a better game than Deus Ex: Human Revolution - maybe not from a gameplay or "customization" point of view, but certainly regarding the story and the way your actions during the game influence it.

Deus Ex is UGLY AS SIN(it was outdated back in 2000, quite frankly), has some of the worst first person shooting on the market, way-too-big hubs, and comically bad AI.

Burnout Paradise is the best game in the series, and I hope they never go back to not having an open world.

Soul Calibur was a step back both story and gameplay-wise to Soul Edge, and the series has been on the decline ever since.

Sony and Nintendo should make a console together. Nintendo comes up with the innovative input methods while Sony deals with the hardware. Call it the Playtendo or Nintendo Station some crap. I have no doubt in my mind that this would will ever happen or work.

Max Payne 3 is shit and Rockstar has lost their touch since San Andreas.

Too Human was a fun game. Not saying it was perfect, but I played the crap out of it and the fact that the trilogy won't be finished is one of my biggest disappointments this gen.

Deus Ex: HR was a bad game. It had annoying stealth sections with terrible enemy Ai that felt no different from early MGS, Splinter Cell, Thief, etc. The story was dumb and the voice acting (especially the main character) was bad. The combat sucked, and even though some of the environment design was cool it got really old running up and down the same corridors.

The Metroid Prime games are mediocre open-world shooters with some puzzles built in. They are basically Zelda games without the charm, and don't hold up that well as shooters.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is overrated. It's not a bad game, but its pretty shallow for a "hardcore" turn-based strategy game released in 2012 and was pretty buggy when it was released. It also looks like shit.

Unpopular prediction: Gearbox will go down in history as a one-hit wonder after Borderlands starts to wear its welcome (already did for me) and they fail to recreate that success (or any success) with a new IP.

The Trainer Red battle at the end of Pokémon Gold and Silver wasn't very good in retrospect. It was a cheap trick meant to artificially lengthen the game's crappy second region by forcing unnecessary grinding, masked by a manipulation of the player's nostalgia for the firt game. If t were any other trainer; people would have been rather upset with the battle.

Oh, and it's usually not as "epic" as people make it out to be, as his team is kind of just garbage Pokémon at high levels and the battle will consist of one side curbstomping the other 9/10 times due to discrepancy in level.

Top Bottom
