Lance Armstrong plans to admit doping to Oprah (USA Today)

I only caught the second half but Oprah asked some great questions. Lance is just digging himself a deeper grave with every answer.

Anybody know if there is a replay of part 1? I missed the first half

I respect how he's handled that topic in this interview. No need to try and pounce on me.

We shouldn't hold people like Floyd Landis to a different standard though. When he got caught, he denied it, but eventually he admitted it, and then proceeded to throw Armstrong under the bus.

Armstrong hasn't taken that route. That is all.

in terms of lying and then bullying others to protect their own image, Lance is about 10,000 times worse than Landis.

Armstrong's route was to sue and harras those people who accused him of cheating, so much so that they decide to drop their cases.

Landis' route was to admit to it and then let everyone else know that not just him cheated.

Big difference I agree, but Lance acted as bad as Landis acted towards him to about 100 different people and organisations.

"Did you sue Betsy Andreu"
"To be honest, I sued so many people I cant be sure"

Well i started watching cycling because of lance, and i will continue, he wont be a hero for me anymore, but he showed me this great sport

The commercial breaks were obnoxious, especially in the final 30 minutes.

I'm definitely taping tomorrow night so I can skip through that shit.

Holy shit Betsy is furious on CNN. She confirmed he didn't admit to the hospital thing because lawyers told him not too when she asked him on the phone.

Betsy Andreu sounds very unstable, selfish and self serving on Anderson Cooper. She should let this play out instead of thinking of only herself

I wonder how you would feel after all the crap Lance and his team has put her through.

Pretty much ruined her life, while Lance lived the high life.

To be honest I would be satisfied with him admitting doping, rest is gravy. Lance still looks crazier and proven dope, which proved her point in the end didnt it, leaving the hospital stuff aside

I'd be pretty pissed too, seeing this slimeball weasel his way out of a question about whether he tried to ruin my life.

No worries, not pouncing on you. I just think that throwing Armstrong under the bus was actually the right thing to do in this case.

I missed the beginning, just seeing it now. Justifying testosterone use due to the lack of a testicle is crazy but you could see how someone like him could justify it to himself.

Armstrong was caught multiple times and he threw multiple people under the bus while denying it.

He didnt admit to the hospital incident, which still paints Betsy as a liar.

He did not say that Besty did not lie and was telling the truth.

I doubt she would be happy with what he said. I doubt you would be happy if you were in Betsy's shoes and heard the interview either. He hasn't said anything to directly restore Betsy's reputation.

well, now we know he doesn't think she is fat

Watched two minutes and turned it off in disgust. Just a charade of insincere "apologies" and avoidance of admitting real guilt.

This pathological liar will reap all kinds of benefits, book deals, etc. from his "confession". Just another publicity stunt for the fraudulent piece of shit.

And people are falling for it.

Cliff notes? I don't have cable. =(

On Monday, Lance Armstrong sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss his career, allegations of cheating, and his future now that he's been stripped of his Tour de France victories and other medals. Here, Yahoo! Sports will discuss in detail the interview as it happens.

• "Yes or no: did you ever take banned substances?" "Yes." Armstrong also admits to blood doping, human growth hormones, and other substances, and says he did so during all seven of his Tour de France victories. Clever use of yes-or-no questions to lay the groundwork.

• "I viewed it as very simple." Lance Armstrong speaks truth. He did anything necessary to win. Anything.

• Armstrong pinpoints his 2009 comeback as the reason why everything broke wide open. "We wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't come back." He evades Winfrey's question about whether he would have "gotten away with it" by saying we can't know what would have happened.

• In sum, the interview has been a mix of hard facts (admitting to drug use) and dodging of opportunities for empathy (as with those Armstrong hurt). This likely will do little to move the needle in Armstrong's favor.

• Armstrong disputes Tyler Hamilton's contention that he failed a test during the Tour de Suisse in 2001. "I'm gonna tell you what's true and not true," he said. "That story is not true. No positive test, no paying off the lab, no secret meeting with the lab director." He further added that not only did he not pay UCI to make the issue go away, UCI approached him for a donation.

• Armstrong has sued so many people he CANNOT REMEMBER EVERYONE HE SUED. Think about that for a second.

• Winfrey zeroes in on this element, the idea that Armstrong owes apologies to specific people whom he sued, even though they were telling the truth. "It's a major flaw and it's a guy who expected to get whatever he wanted and to control every outcome. It's inexcusable," Armstrong says. He almost sounds as if he's talking of someone else, not himself. And he says he understands that some people will never forgive him.

• This is Armstrong's justification for his behavior: "I was just on the attack, Oprah. Territory being threatened, team being threatened, reputation being threatened, I'm going to attack." Even if the "threat" was actually the truth.

• Another damning quote: "I didn't invent the [drug-taking] culture [in cycling], but I didn't try to stop the culture."

• And another: "Did you feel in any way that you were cheating?" "No."

• Winfrey pins him down on being a bully, and Armstrong agrees: "I was a bully. I tried to control the narrative."

• Winfrey shows tape of Armstrong lying during depositions. This is the kind of thing could end up screwing Armstrong to the wall, lying under oath. He says now that he was an "arrogant prick" during testimony in 2005. During that case, Armstrong sued SCA Promotions for unpaid prize money and bonuses. He said during that deposition that he did not use drugs. (SCA had insured the bonuses but refused to pay.)

• "And Lance, if you'll look under your seat ... it's a fistful of subpoenas!" (Note: this is satire and was not actually said.)

• Armstrong claims that the final time that he doped was in 2005, and that his Tour competitions in 2009 and 2010 were drug-free. In 2009, he placed third; in 2010, he placed 23rd.

• First instance of differing takes on an incident: Armstrong says it is "not true" that Christian Vande Velde alleged Armstrong expected his team to dope up.

• Armstrong acknowledges that he is too late in apologizing, and admits that he does not have a good answer as to why he was defiant and impugned the truthfulness of others.

• When Oprah leaves the realm of lying and delves into the world of perception and the burdens of fame, the interview slows to a crawl. This is not where the focus should be.

• Armstrong deems his drug conspiracy "conservative" and "risk-averse," not as bad as the East German programs of the '70s and '80s. That's not exactly the comparison you want to make if you're trying to lower expectations.

• Former teammate Hamilton may have something to say about Armstrong's assertion that nobody was "forced or pressured or encouraged" to participate in the program.

• Armstrong has pledged to answer questions "directly, honestly and candidly." We shall see.

• The broadcast begins with numerous on-camera denials of drug use by Armstrong. Setting the stage.

• Yahoo! Sports' Dan Wetzel has a list of questions Winfrey should have asked Armstrong. Chief among them: Is he willing to take responsibility for those whose lives and financial situations he ruined by challenging them for speaking what turned out to be the truth? Will he take others down with him as he falls? And most importantly, why now and why with Winfrey herself?

• Winfrey and her producers have to be rethinking their decision to hold the tape for more than 72 hours. Obviously, in that time Armstrong has been pushed aside by the Manti Te'o revelations, and this interview doesn't carry the weight it would have earlier. Also, the decision to air the second half on a Friday night is a curious one.

The interview continues on Friday night.

I think the people falling for it were never going to judge him harshly anyway. The reaction online has been pretty negative (towards him) from what I've seen. Interview has probably had the opposite effect of what he was intending.

No, she doesn't. I'm surprised he went to her. Like she was going to have sympathy? Bitch, she's rich she has her own fucking channel on the television. She didn't get there by being weak.
Arrogance, delusion and just plain ol' crazy. He thought he could 'handle' Oprah (probably still thinks he did) and doesn't realise just how insincere he came across during the interview.

I mean, there were even a couple times when his smirks almost turned into laughter. Not even nervous laughter either. He was impressed with himself.

It was broadcast here on the Discovery Channel. Few ad breaks. The last thing Oprah said in this part?

"Was it just you being your cocky, arrogant, jerk self? [she is referring to the following tweet]"

lance_main_1618744a.jpg

"Your son is 13. You've been fighting this thing his entire life. You heard he was defending you, what did you say to him?"

Dayum.

This is the image and tweet that I picture now when I hear "Lance Armstrong". I wish he would just go to another country and disappear now.

For some strange reason I think things will change for him; the anti doping organization will come and ask for help to find drug users; he will become their consultant and he will become well respected.

I love how Oprah came in guns blazing with the question that everyone wanted an answer to!

I don't see that happening at all. He has NO friends in the anti-doping community and he lost his chance at credibility when he didn't come forward before the judgement was released.

I still think this guy is so far up his own ass he still can't even admit he was in the wrong. He has no credibility.

he went to her because she's paying him a shitload of money for the exclusive, probably

Again, she's paid zero money for this interview.
Yes, they paid Lance $0, but he's still getting paid.

This happens all the time time in the entertainment business when the exchange of money would be seen as untoward.

His payment will probably come in the form of a second 'sweetheart' deal somewhere down the line which could involve another interview, a TV show, documentary, some sort of book advance. Endless possibilities.

Never believe the 'not getting paid of the interview' line in high-profile cases. Nothing happens for free.

Still, his 'payment' could be how he was given an international platform to 'apologise' so he can continue his career, and Oprah's is huge exposure for OWN.

He's going to need all the money that he can get to pay out to the lawsuits that about to hit him from every direction.

I'll hold off on creating a narrative for the interview until it's officially over.

Some things that pissed me off in this thread are the lazy logic and over sensationalizing of how bad Lance was in comparison. Look, it's not just a 'Fuck this one guy.' It's 'Fuck everyone from Postal.'

All of the riders are douches in their own respective ways. Lance definitely stands on top as the king of assholes. He is without a doubt a shitty human being. However, Landis also had his lawyer call up Greg LeMond and make fun of him for being sexually abused. I'm not buying this Lance as a scapegoat for all of them. That's bullshit.

The UCI shares a bunch of blame as well. Postal should have never been able to get away with it. Landis definitely made some really bad decisions as well. I really think the time has come for the UCI to come clean.

Im on the west coast and am just now watching it. He lied outright about the donation to UCI. He said he was already retired when he did it but the personal check from Armstrong for $25000 was in 2002. His company gave another $100,000 in 2005, when he retired.

All these journalists that started coming out of the wooodwork with this self-pitying bullshit should go fucking retire because they are clearly unfit. "He told me so and I trusted him?" Fuck you! You're supposed to be journalists. Being skeptical is your fucking job. "Ooooh, he was such a liar! Poor little old me!" Fuck you! You were either in on it, acting as his fucking PR team and lapping up the crumbs falling from his table or you were complete idiots. In either case you should be hiding under a table somewhere and shutting your fucking mouths until this is over.

Spare us your bullshit. None of you deserve any leeway or consideration.
