What an incredible game! 40 hours in P4G and still far from done. I didn't know I could even get interested back into JRPGs anymore.
It DOES take a while to get started if you are not a fan of the series. It did take me a few tries before I got hooked.
I've tried and tried, but I've never been able to get into a jrpg. Never. But I got my kids a vita for xmas (heh), and I couldn't ignore the praise P4G was getting. Now I understand.
For me, it went like this:
The presentation and story hooked me right away. I got to the first real "dungeon", didn't really understand the leveling system, got my ass kicked over and over, and got frustrated. I would fumble around in battles. Powers had these obtuse names, their effectiveness seemed completely random, and I never had enough HP or SP. To be honest, I thought about just moving on to another game, but the presentation was just so damn awesome.
Then I realized....I must embrace the grind, something I usually hate. And grind I did. Quickly the arcane names and leveling system started to become familiar. I could see my skills improve. Battles became fast-paced. I was able to understand and develop strategies. I came up with a formula to defeat the boss, and when I was ready, I went in with confidence, and laughed as she fell under my sword. Now I understand.
So, even if you are not a jrpg fan, here is why you should try P4G:
- The presentation (fantastic music, menus, style, art) are all top notch, triple fucking A quality. Really charming and fun. The game doesn't take itself so seriously.
- Good story and characters. Fairly well paced introduction to the many, many characters and their roles.
- Battle system (once I finally figured it out) is fast and fun. Persona's and their powers are cool looking. Part of the fun is mixing and matching to see what creative new powers result.
- Controls seemed flakey to me at first; either moving too fast or too slow. But now I'm able to quickly maneuver with precision.
- Many save points allow for quick jump in and out sessions. It loads fast and the menus are snappy.
I've played for many hours and have not tired of it yet. It is unique, and if you give it some time, it will grow on you.
