This has happened in previous inaugurations as well.
Before the 20th Amendment, the Oath of Office was on March 4. It fell on Sunday for the swearing in of Presidents Monroe, Taylor, Hayes and Wilson.
Since the 20th Amendment was moved the Oath of Office to January 20th, this is the third time it has fallen on Sunday. Presidents Eisenhower and Reagan had to have private ceremonies before their Inaugural Address the next day.

Doesn´t state of the union also always happens on the 20th of January? Isn´t that the tradition? I just looked up and it´s happening on the 12th of February.
Might be the tradition in non-election years.
Also apparently Obama will be the first two term president to take the oath of office 4 separate times. He took it twice in 2009 also when Roberts messed up and he had to do it over privately it the next day.

If he doesn't take the oath today he stops being President at noon. Presumably John Boehner would be acting President until the oath was administered, following the line of succession. They didn't want to have the big public ceremony on a Sunday due to the cost of pulling in massive security details on a weekend.

Maybe it's just me but that ceremony we had today should (and could) have been it, especially for all 2nd term Presidents.

I get the tradition and law aspect. However, having a parade and semi celebration for a remarkably bad administration is pretty unfortunate.
