[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

Almost all of Xbox 360 specs were leaked in early 2004. RAM was rumoured at 256 but even then it was expected to be increased to 512 by the time it got announced.

what about PS3? all i remember from back then is everyone being confused about cores and CPU's because of the CELL being so weird for it's time. then when it was announced/detailed it made more sense.

i DO remember after the specs were detailed that people complained about video cards of that time having 512mb on board, and that PS3 was doomed for only having 256mb for video.

It will still be Playstation 4. If they actually learn how to market there tech, it would be a good selling point sine almost all of there stuff is in the "4th" iteration

Uncharted 4
Killzone 4
4K Resolution

And then sell it for $399/400

Bam.

Is this the shortest amount of hype lead up time for new consoles? We usually get 18 months, and now we're looking at 10, or even 9. That's if they reveal now!

Both companies want to pretend nothing is up so they can sell current hardware. Most of my 360 friends still think we won't get a new console till the end of 2014.

Everything seems to suggest that Kinect is an integral part of the user interface in the new XBox. We're not talking just games here - we're talking about the primary way to interact with the OS. Add to that rumors of AR goggles somewhere down the line and one speculate where they plan to go with that eventually.

No matter how important they think Kinect is, the vast majority of users are still going to navigate the OS with a controller in their hand. Steam didn't just introduce big picture mode because people are tired of controllers.

Everyone seems to forget that the Xbox 360 was not publicly unveiled until 6 months prior to it's launch.

Cell was pretty well known from what I remember. The biggest problem was I think Sony concentrated so much on Cell and Blu-ray, they forgot about the game machine. Then they woke up.

It's a minor miracle the turn around they managed when you think about it.

there has been allegedly leaks about the new generation for more then a few months now. so if you're following that topic closely, you have more then your 18 months, when the console actually releases.

Can we expect separate audio processing chip (or are they going to use the special compute unit for that)?

Also, will all the Jag in drag cores be available to developer or would Sony lock a few up for security and OS related tasks?

They had a lot of ground they could give up from the PS1 and PS2 days. Still lots of brand loyalty in the Playstation brand even today but its dying a little which is why the vita isn't doing as well as the psp.

.

Yeah but, you could argue the Wii sold so much because it appealed to people for whom a controller was intimidating/confusing.

If MS are positioning as the living room box, an effective (i.e. much better than current Kinect) way to control the OS would be a smart thing for them.

Uncertain - 4 is not a particularly popular number across Asia. Numerology is big in out East.
It's a global product. And shi didn't stop Yakuza 4 or Gran Turismo 4 or Dynasty Warriors 4 or Metal Gear Solid 4.

Not naming it PlayStation 4/PS4 and capitalizing on the still very strong brand or befuddling that brand with something incomprehensible (Vita, "U") would be an incredibly stupid decision.

Utter nonsense. Vita's issues have nothing to do with the PlayStation brand and everything to do with the fact that it's a product with no sizable market to begin with.

Yeah. I've been hearing quite a bit ever since late 2011.

I might not like the long gens (definitely start getting bored after 5 years), but I do like them waiting to announce.

I wonder if the hard-drives would use a small SSD, to speed up the loading times. Akin to Apple's fusion drive. With each increase in graphical quality, it will take even more time to load content into RAM from storage assuming normal disk-drives. And loading times as they are right now are quite slow.

I almost expect the PS4 to have something like a fusion drive. That would jive pretty good with the faster RAM speed, since content can be streamed more efficiently with less RAM.

Actually its in the same shoes the PSP was in I would say. The Vita is a great improvement on the PSP but it is not selling. What sizable market was the PSP for that disappeared with the Vita?

Do you honestly believe they will do that to one of their biggest product?

Your avatar and name makes me sad. Imagine Radec 2.0 or someone else with similar armour and presence were to be featured in KZ4...

Imagine KZ4 to look as good as BF3 on high preset. Amazing stuff!

This doesn't account for why the 3DS is doing about 10x better salewise than the vita. When the PSP launched the DS was barely outselling it.
It's Nintendo -- it has an appeal that the Sony handheld doesn't. I have a few younger cousins with 3DSes -- I'd bet they don't even know what a Vita is. And, you're right, until you look at final global sales for the DS vs the PSP. I'm not familiar with the exact numbers but I don't think the 3DS is outselling the DS, right?

I'd guess a part of the reason is 3DS appeals more to young kids/the parents of young kids. Vita appeals more to the teen/adult core gamer.

In Asia, doesn't 4 represent death or some stupid shit?

Having said that, hopefully its still called PS4.

Then again, why didn't they call it the PSP2?

It's about as bad as 13 is in the west. Some people really believe that shit, but most are grown up enough to overlook it.

Re the PSP2 thing, it's cause every western media outlet and many people thought the PSP was a huge an utter failure, so Vita was named to disassociate itself with the PSP.

Even if it is conflated with "death" I'm sure the Japanese understand that it's a Japanese product from a Japanese company. I'm sure it'll be okay. Plus, you could always just call it something else in Japan.

You have absolutely zero faith in Next-gen lol.

Edit: I see, my bad. Honestly, I completely forgot about that silly thread.

1+3 = 4. I guess the reason people fear 4 and 8 is because a lot of bad events tend to happen on dates totaling that.

It's fine if they want to avoid the number, but if they don't go with "PlayStation 4", that'll really hurt the brand.

Ok, so if its as bad as the number 13 is in NA, hopefully they just stick with 4 because then its not a big deal.

And I thought as much about the PSP.

But then PS3 was kinda of a disaster for much of its early life, especially when it was compared to the PS2.

So do you think Sony will have the same mindset? I mean, PS3 is a great system and has made up a lot of lost ground, but compared to the PS2, its wasnt that great.

I Japan?, 4 makes a shi sound. Shi also sounds like death.

So to the Japanese, its sounds like Playstation Death.

Which is pretty awesome.

Well, it's supposedly 7.5 times faster than PS3's RAM (from 25.6 gb/s to 192gb/s)

my only fear is, what if MS updates nextbox a few years down the road (or sooner) and instead of 3GB for OS, it will take only 1GB. In that case nextbox has much more ram even if slower.

EDIT: guys drop the "shi" part.

Whatever MS end up reserving is almost certainly not going to change.

They've already done the rebranding from PlayStation 3 to simply PS3 and since then PS3 has been nothing but success for them, so I think they'll stick with PS4 for next gen.

Dude that has nothing to do with brand royalty. The Vita has a massive up hill climb against the super smartphones and Ipads and Android tablets of today. Nintendo even had to do a complete shuffle of price to move their handheld.

Woah woah, Badgerfield 3?

3-Badgers.jpg

If they don't name it 4 because of numerology, I will boycott their superstitious asses until they learn the hidden meaning of 0$.

When you are doing a tech demo, you make it run and thats all. If you have some constraints you can work around it. The i7 is worthless and they could have ran the same thing on a celeron. CPUs aren't useful in rendering in detail, they are used to keep the gpu fed and for AI and some physics, since its a pre constructed scene, the AI and objects are predetermined thus CPU ussage is going to be low. ( they quoted as thus in the Agni's philosophy)

Maybe you should realize optimizations will come. When EPIC release the good samaritan tech demo, it ran on 3x GTX 580s. After 1 year of optimization, they ran it on 1 GTX 680. Thats about a 150% reduction in performance needed to run the same thing.

Have a good day.
Talking about optimisation in a closed-boxed systems gets a lot of people butthurt these days.

Yeah I found that article pretty lulz as well.

"Badgerfield 3 should run on MOSTLY high sets with nex gen cronsoles"

What is so funny about that? You are talking about a 300 watt AMD processor based console. it isn't going to be performing better than a 400-500 watt PC with an intel processor and a big power sucking graphics card. The current intel processors run circles around AMD's.

These consoles will be able to do what a mid tier PC can do today. That is nothing to sneeze at.

I doubt they won't call it PS4. Europea and U.S are the biggest markets, and I don't know if a name change will hurt them more in these locations than in Asia by keeping the 4.

Obviously, I think with good marketing all you need is for Playstation to be in the name. Orbis actually sounds pretty cool.
