Just finished Haibane Renmei. Impressions to come later.
Watching that show managed to make me miss Geneon. Had a lot of the usual suspects in terms of dubbing for Geneon shows. Also, (even though I have the Funi release) there was a few odds and ends Geneon did. Like an interview from 2003 at Anime-Expo. R.I.P

Yes, as it stands the forward cost of doing BD releases is too risky for them to take. I do hope this changes with Utena though and they see it as a good investment.

Meanwhile, Usagi is sulking alone over Mamoru, wondering if she should change her hair too. Minako shows up and offers to change her hair, letting it down to brush it. This improves Usagi a hundredfold almost instantly.

This leads me to something I was wondering about. Do the senshi transform in some kind of alternate dimension? There isnt always that much room to transform all the time. Its probably just hammerspace physics, but it always bothered me.
Anyway, Sailor Moon is like, haha you dumbass, Im over here! After a brief battle, Sailor Moon has the youma in a vulnerable state for Moon Healing Escalation.
The youma regains her composure and begins to attack.
Minako takes this opportunity to transform into Venus. Sailor Moon is in a heated battle with the youma on the mean streets. She is backed into a corner as usual when the other senshi show up. They unleash attacks, destroying the Youmas razor arm. Sailor moon uses Moon Healing Escalation
The music is different in this scene. Because of the upgrade?
The Senshi speak to Tuxedo Kamen.
Also, do the Senshi fix all the broken shit in town and wipe out everyones memories after a battle? You would think this stuff would cause hardcore trauma in the people involved.

I think that part of the problem is that not only does it cost more to produce BDs, it also often requires another complete round of license negotiation. As I understand it, rights for streaming, tv, dvd, and bd are often negotiated individually, which complicates matters.

The margins from selling other people's stuff aren't really that big for them I'd wager especially with them selling stuff bellow RRP very often. Then their own actual stuff isn't as many as other companies have and they also don't have as many resources at their disposal as other companies that have been doing BDs for a while.

One Piece Film - Strong World
Yeah okay, that was pretty good. It's certainly not as epic or complex as most of the manga story arcs, but as a relatively stand alone "big deal" movie project, I think it delivers pretty well. It's clear a lot of the movie was conceptualized based on what would be visually exciting, with a lot of cool stuff packed into a 2 hour movie runtime. Instead of developing a more complex multi-layered arc which works for a manga medium, here it's a very clear cut "save the world" setting with a simple objective and a rather basic but visually interesting setting.
One thing I really loved about the movie is how it totally nails the feeling that the movie is set after the Strawhat crew is really established as 300% certified badasses. There's a tone throughout the film that they're super strong, and super confident. There's no sense that they doubt each other or are relatively noob pirates like the earlier parts of the manga. That scene with them marching into the meeting room was soooo perfect. Plus, Luffy looks fucking great in a suit.
Having read about 260 chapters of One Piece in the past week though, I'll say that as a villain Shiki is really quite a let down. It's hard to imagine him being that much of a threat to the group after all the shit they survived in Skypiea, Enies Lobby, and Thriller Bark. I was sort of hoping that towards the end there would be some twists to make it more dangerous, but I guess that wasn't within the scope of the movie.
Still, it was a fun ride with good action and lots of cool "One Piece" scenes. Good comedy, solid action, great posing, and the predictable but awesome transition from silly Luffy to serious badass Luffy. This might not be a particularly strong story emotionally nor is there much of the Oda magic in the narrative, but in terms of tone and execution, it definitely felt like a "movie" as opposed to a TV special or long TV episode.
P.S. Toei's CG ships are godawful. They stick out like a sore thumb and the texturing is really ugly. Ugh. Lol. Also, this movie really shafted Nico Robin. She had almost NOTHING to do aside from some background stuff. Didn't even have a solid action scene to herself. Meh!
Baron Omatsuri vs Strong World comparison
I guess now that I've seen this, I can finally compare it with the only other One Piece movie I was interested in enough to watch - Mamoru Hosoda's movie about Baron Omatsuri. In terms of "One Piece"-ness, I definitely agree that this is much closer to what One Piece represents in the manga, and there are better fights, and more cohesive flavor in terms of fitting into the world of the manga. But artistically in terms of making a beautiful and unique film, Hosoda still wins.

Yes. It sits alone at the top of a big ol' heap. It resonated with me in a particular way that no other show has. Its not the cutest, most exciting or most entertaining show Ive ever seen, but it is the most meaningful to me.

So long as we're talking about ABe works, what are peoples thoughts on NieA_7? It looks like I can get the old singles online for pretty cheap, so I'm considering it.
Spice and wolf, for me, is one of the shows I left off half way. It was kind of cute and you could feel that there was someplace the plot wanted to end up but it didn't grab me.

Under seven was good too. It had the same sense of exploration and wonder but it wasn't as atmospheric as Haibane.
Its light hearted comedy if memory serves correctly. Nothing too wacky or insane like other magical alien girl shows, but more like ABe's typical works (except Texhnolyze)

I have both of these, too, so... in terms of the physical quality of the sets themselves, the Madoka LEs are much nicer than the Bakemonogatari box.
Personally, I like Bakemonogatari as a show much more than Madoka, but I can't deny the niceness of Madoka's release.
In terms of overall package, the MAdoka LEs cost a bit more altogether but are much more worth it. I like Madoka more than Bakemonagatari as well. There is more physical swag like stickers and posters with Madoka, as well as 3 soundtracks. Bakemonagatari only really has the small artbook and some character commentaries with it. Overall I'd say go with Madoka. It is a more complete package and you will be happier with it if you are spending this kind of money.

Good taste there. It's among the very few works in fiction I can really emotionally connect with as a whole, too; I don't know what it is, but it has that something that just does it for me.
Also a big part of my enjoyment was listening to Blue Flow after each episode ended. Masumi Itou is great.
