I'm down with this.

That Star Trek preview I saw before The Hobbit was fucking great. I'm interested in seeing what he will do with Star Wars.

Why can't it go into production late this year into next summer and still release in 2015? Don't most blockbusters shoot only a year before release?

Star Wars has usually needed about 2 1/2 years total production time. But then again, those were productions headed up by a Lucas-run Lucasfilm. A Kennedy-run Lucasfilm might be a little more expedient, you're right.

This makes me happy, Star Trek was fantastic and better then all the prequels combined.

Star Trek 2009 was the best Star Wars movie since ESB.
That observation is somehow absurd, stupid, accurate, and poignant all at the same time.

Regardless, bring on Episode JJ. I'm so down.

It's been a long time since I've seen them, but wasn't there already a fair bit of lens flare during certain light saber fights in the prequels?

I'm not trying to be an ass here but I honestly don't see what's so special about JJ Abrams. I've seen all the movies he's directed, I don't really love any of them but I don't hate them at all and I don't think he's a bad director (they all have terrible scripts though), but what does he bring to the table? He's a working director making big studio blockbuster movies. There are a lot of those in Hollywood.

I'm confused every time somebody mentions they think Ben Affleck would be a good choice to direct a Star Wars movie.

Dude's never made anything sci-fi related... perfect choice! wat lol

I'm surprised by the negative reactions I've read in this thread. The only movie of his I know I've watched is Star Trek (2009), and from that, I think he'd do a fine job for Star Wars. I thought he was regarded as a generally good director too.

I think the biggest problem with Abrams (other than the fact he is ridiculously overrated and brings his posse of talentless hacks with him wherever he goes) is that he is way too reverent; MI 3 was just meh, but both Star Trek and especially Super 8 are just... ugh. Not a fan. He loves the Spielberg/Lucas-type movies he grew up with but he doesn't understand why they work. But I know I'm in the minority as a hater of Star Trek 09.

Plus 95% of those films were computer generated which I assume takes much longer.

I trust JJ to get this out in time if the script is already done. I predict it goes into production by early next year and makes it by summer 2015.

I'm okay with this.

Not that there won't be a bunch of other hands touching this movie, since Disney probably wants a favorable start out of the gates.

I totally agree. He is like a lesser version of Spielberg. Star Wars needs a visionary with some balls to do the franchise justice. Oh well, whatever.

Could be good, could be bad. Impossible to know at this point. But at least it won't be as painful as the prequels.

Meanwhile, a Giacchino Star Wars soundtrack has the potential to be amazing.

jj abrams should direct the new star wars movie

and george lucas should direct people to their seats in the movie theatre

He's a good director. Is that not enough anymore? No one was a good sci-fi (or any genre really) director before handed a sci-fi project. I'm sick of only "genre" writers/directors getting work within that genre. It's bullshit, and they usually produce shit anyways (I'm looking at you Joss Whedon.)

Ben Afleck? lol

JJ is up there with Bryan Singer as someone who I'd want to direct a Star Wars. I've liked Star Trek, Lost, super 8, MI3, and Cloverfield so I am sure this will be good as well.

Star Trek 09 and Super 8 are two of my favorite movies of the past decade. You're nuts.

star trek was unmemorable for me and you are spot on about his attempts to be spielberg and failing miserably in super 8
