Put "Star" in the title, JJ Abrams will Direct it: Episode VII gets a Director

He's a good director. Is that not enough anymore? No one was a good sci-fi (or any genre really) director before handed a sci-fi project. I'm sick of only "genre" writers/directors getting work within that genre. It's bullshit, and they usually produce shit anyways (I'm looking at you Joss Whedon.)
You know who else is a good director and even better than Affleck? Steve McQueen. But his storytelling sensibilities and experience with his past films don't exactly make him a great choice to direct a Star Wars movie.

I think they've made a great choice, but what will happen to the Star Trek franchise now? Didnt Abrams / BobOrci lay it out as a trilogy?

But Affleck has made nothing but thrillers.
(As opposed to Abrams, who has made nothing but shit!)
You're saying the storytelling sensibility that went into making high tension action scenes in the Town or the climax of Argo don't have a huge amount of overlap with anything that'll be in Ep 7?

Also, [insert token Kershner reference here.]

Good director make a good movie. When did that get lost?

Now we have to have certain types of directors only directing certain genres?

If Affleck was interested I'd be 100% behind it because I think he is talented enough to tackle a Star Wars film.

You just want James Cameron to direct it, you masochist.

The best Star Wars movie wasn't made by a sci-fi director.

Good point.

I would be curious though how Affleck would handle a big ass movie like this and his usage of cgi since I don't recall he's done anything with it before directing wise.

So toy story 3 guy penning the script and JJ Abrams directing?

I think its better than any of us could have reasonably expected to be honest.

Those lens flare jokes are so bad. I don't think anyone even noticed the lens flare while watching the movie and it just became some thing nerds on the Internet clings Onto and repeat over and over again. It's not funny it's just dumb.

I remember really enjoying Star Trek and then going online and seeing "yea but da lens flare!"

That's what makes zero sense about this director choice.

Actually it makes all the sense in the world, why would Disney care about Trek? The fact that we're concered about the Trek franchise now, only confirms that they've made the right choice, it's a dick move by Abrams, though. ;)

Not this crap again. Take it somewhere else.

I was not aware I was restarting an old argument on here.

Sorry for involving myself in the Neogaf conversation process.

All I meant is that based on Star Trek and Mission: Impossible 3, Abrams has a very energetic way of moving through his films. It's not bad, I'm just a fan of the more grounded, smooth, casual camera angles and movements. Abrams methods typically involve CGI.

I wasn't trying to start a prequel bashing thread.

if you didnt notice the lens flares in his movies then you must not have eyes

This is fucking nutzo
I can't believe it to be true??
How long will it take for the inevitable update where they reach out to JJ who says its all BS???

Wow if true! I hope he makes it very distinct from his Star Trek pictures.

Never thought I'd be saying a sentence like that : /

You guys are missing the point. I'm not saying that directors ought to be locked into the genres they've made good on, I'm saying that I'm confused why Affleck - out off all the good and much better directors than him out there, is the one I keep seeing championed. Even before this announcement. It's not about him not having a sci-if background. It's a lot to do with him lacking any sort of hard visual effects experience and people all of a sudden acting like he would be a great fit for a franchise heavily steeped in visual effects.

Abrams is a much, much better choice than Affleck.

I think both were pursued because both have a pretty solid handle on populist filmmaking. They know how to make "Pop" films. Star Wars needs to be that more than anything.

Having visual effects experience is sorta like having cinematography experience - so long as you have great experts on hand willing to help you, it's not necessary to be TOO well versed. It's necessary that you have people working with you who know what it is you're trying to get, and know how to give it to you.

He is probably the smartest decision from a box office standpoint.
- Good reputation with Disney
- Several hits under the belt
- Well established name
- Critically well-received, as well.

Artistically though, I fear he's falling into the fanboy void. He loves Star Wars to the point where he can't make it his own.

Because Argo!

Obviously the Star Trek reboot and Star Wars Episode VII are two very different things, but I could see JJ recasting Han, Leia and Luke.

And you know, I'd be totally okay with it.
