I love it.

Those lens flare jokes are so bad. I don't think anyone even noticed the lens flare while watching the movie and it just became some thing nerds on the Internet clings Onto and repeat over and over again. It's not funny it's just dumb.

I remember really enjoying Star Trek and then going online and seeing "yea but da lens flare!"

yeah exactly, and I'll always take the Abrams lens flare over the stupid Windows Movie Maker transition effects Lucas used in the prequels.

You guys are missing the point. I'm not saying that directors ought to be locked into the genres they've made good on, I'm saying that I'm confused why Affleck - out off all the good and much better directors than him out there, is the one I keep seeing championed. Even before this announcement. It's not about him not having a sci-if background. It's a lot to do with him lacking any sort of hard visual effects experience and people all of a sudden acting like he would be a great fit for a franchise heavily steeped in visual effects.

Abrams is a much, much better choice than Affleck.

I guess I'm just more concerned with the storytelling than I am about the visual effects. Thor's visual effects turned out fine; at this point, I really don't think inexperience with visual effects is an issue at all in this day and age when just about every effect will be CG anyways.

Obviously the Star Trek reboot and Star Wars Episode VII are two very different things, but I could see JJ recasting Han, Leia and Luke.

And you know, I'd be totally okay with it.

please for the love of all that is holy. If you have these characters please just move the time period forward and let them be there actual age and played by the original actors.

nobody will be able to pull off those characters, it just won't feel right.

Isn't that what a visual effects supervisor is for?

Guys, pretty sure the star wars art bible will make sure there is no lens flare. You're nuts thinking lucasfilm doesn't have this shit locked air tight.

I wonder if they will dare to put "From the director of Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness" in the Episode 7 trailer. ;)

So will Williams be returning or will we get Giacchino?

Gotta imagine it's Giacchino. Williams gave up on Harry Potter after a few movies, and probably only finished out Star Wars because..well, because Star Wars. At this point, he's only working when Spielberg specifically asks him to. I'm willing to bet he's out, and Giacchino is in.

Anyway - Lens Flare jokes are to Abrams what Slo-Mo jokes are to Snyder: Simple shorthand at best, Lame "Family-Guy" style reference comedy at worst.

If they recast the characters then the movie will be an instant joke already. It's either they bring back Fisher, Ford, Hamill, Williams or they go into a really future timeline for the series.

The same case could have been made with Trek though.

They didn't really recast anyone in Star Trek (at least, the internal logic of everything worked imo). I'd say the handling of that whole process of rebooting the franchise was handled really deftly by Abrams, even if the result was a pretty dull film.

it's a shame you still haven't come around on it :) hopefully Into Darkness will do the job.

this better be true

I know he has haters, but what he did for star trek was amazing (as someone who has never ever seen anything star trek) so i really hope he gets to direct this

Abrahams paces his movies weirdly and fast, he crams lots of stuff and everything gets to fit ''conveniently'' too well to the point of ''oh c'mon'' like in his Star Trek

Hey Kirk, walk for 5 minutes and meet Old Spoke in a Cave.. hey guys, walk 10 minutes and meet Scotty!

yehhh

But Trek is a reboot and not a straight sequel.

But JJ could easily have just made a new Star Trek film with a completely new cast of characters and introduced Nemoy and Shatner as cameos, the fact that Star Wars is going with Ep7 means pretty much nothing, as it could have almost nothing to do with the timeline that we know of.

Worked for Batman.

I think Affleck keeps getting named just because he was rumored to be in contention early and was one of the better ones on that list.

Both fine choices.

Hate on me all you want GAF. I love new Star Trek even though it differs from the originals and Affleck's proven to be a great director.

I agree man. The latest trek was up there with undiscovered country. I'm pumped about this news.

Please for the love of God keep Zachary Quinto away from this. Can't stand that shit actor in anything he appears in. The worst part of American Horror Story as well.

And his goon squad better stay away too. No Lindelof, Orci or Kurtzman involvement.

Giachinno is acceptable I guess but that's about it.

Uh...sure. I liked Star Trek; hell the only reason that shit worked with that clumsy script was the direction and the great cast. Wonder if he brings Micheal g with him for the score

Nah, it's a Skywalker saga continuation. Fisher/Hamill have pretty much confirmed they're going to be doing SOMETHING for the new movies.
