They have a minimum charge for credit/debit purchases. Minimum purchase limits exist everywhere, not just Sony. My favorite Chinese take-out used to do this, because they were getting eaten alive by credit/debit fees. I didn't blame them for making a rational business decision...

Do you mean I could load the account with some credit first? I could indeed, but quite why I can't just add to cart (like I can on every other platform that accesses the store) is beyond me.
It's annoying, but unless you don't intend to buy anything ever again on PSN you'll probably use it up eventually, so it's more like putting 1.25 in a jar for future use.
I wonder if those companies do it just because they can eat the costs better, or that it's rarely an issue? At any rate I got $10 for the 30 cent games just in case. Guess I didn't need to, but stuff will probably crop up to use excess anyway (... like upgrading VC games.)
Not sure how the others do it, but I know Apple tries to minimize it by delaying billing so they can pool up multiple microtransactions into a single transaction.
Sony need to save money wherever they can. Amazon, Google and Apple are doing OK for themselves right now.
