Never been to one of those conventions...
Was tempted to go to PAX or something in the Vancouver area...

Though I don't think any of my friends would go with me to one of those...

I think literature nerds are in a separate category typically reserved for English and Poetry majors. They don't intersect as much with the escapist crowd.

True. I do hate most "gamers" and sci-fi fans in most conversational situations. I'd rather just talk literature, film, economics, science or motorsports.

I was briefly toying with the idea of going to Melbourne for PAX Australia (I live in New Zealand) but it would probably be far too expensive.. plus I don't think I'd like to go alone.

Would be nice to pop my plane cherry though.

I'm talking about fantasy/sci-fi, which quite often does. But on all these recent nerd/geek shows I see hardly a mention. No one even mentioning LOTR as a favorite. I mean, as much as I don't like that book I've always thought of that as a staple of geek culture. But no, now it seems it's all about comics or games. Or MLP.

Do I count even if most of what I read is teen?

No. Read an actual book, like Ham on Rye, or Catcher in the Rye, or The Bartimaeus Trilogy, or The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Time to grow up now.

The sorrows of young werther is a better teen self loathing, existential crisis sort of story.

For the beatnik itch, read On The Road.

For the travel kind of narrative, All the Pretty Horses or The Crossing.
