Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Animated Short

One of the bigger goals artistically was to make sure our art integrated with what Sanzaru was doing in 3D. We took a cue from their elaborate models, detailed environments, and wonderful concept art to guide our cinematic work. We wanted to bring the whole 2D experience to a higher level. It’s a rare opportunity to do 2D animation in console gaming, so we had to make sure we did a great job.

Many fans, including myself, believe that Sly Cooper and the gang would make a fantastic animated TV show or movie. With that mindset, Ghostbot presented to Sanzaru and PlayStation the idea of doing an animated short that would reintroduce Sly Cooper and the gang in a big way. The animated short we ultimately ended up creating shows a story from Sly’s past that the fans haven’t seen. It also gives first time viewers a sense of fun and adventure that awaits them in Sly’s world.

Much like Sly and his sneaky ways, you might have seen episodes from the animated short pop up across the web on some of the industry’s most popular gaming sites. Here’s the first one, and another, oh, and here too. Some of you have already been tracking down the episodes and putting the pieces of the puzzle together to uncover the whole story, but we wanted to share the whole thing on PlayStaiton.Blog in its uninterrupted entirety

Posted in the other Sly thread, but good, now it can be seen by more people. BUY THIS GAME PEOPLE!! Too much hard work and love was clearly put into this.

Wow, I actually saw like 2 parts of this yesterday and was looking for the final segment. Just in time, I guess! I really love the animation style in this, my excitement for Sly 4 went up a lot more after seeing these kinds of awesome cutscenes in the demo.

A trivial complaint. But It bugs me that the in-game Carmalita doesn't look like the cartoon one :/

I always liked Sly.
I wasn't really excited for this one.
This short increased my interest tenfold.

Absolutely delightful. It's not even the best animation, but it works. There's just so much heart. Evokes a bit of Archer.

Really hope it doesn't bomb, but Sony won't likely market it at all :(

The $40 price point should help it somewhat, at least...

I probably won't be picking this up day 1 (still have the original trilogy to finish) but I'll definitely pick it up eventually. Everything about it looks great, and I had a fun time with the demo that came with the Ratchet collection. Here's hoping it doesn't bomb, no matter how likely that may be :/

Just finished watching the short, that was excellent. :D

Nice. I loved the cinematics in the demo.

That's where I come in I guess with my friends, haha.

I'm posting the shit out of this game on my facebook feed. People gotta know a new Sly Cooper game's about to be on the loose!!

Hang on, the new Sly Cooper is $40 in the US but £40 in the UK? I thought Sony was keeping on top of having prices appropriately converted worldwide. I want to buy it the week of release and I'm sure it's worth the full cost but I don't think I'll ever make use of the Vita download code and I'm juggling money like a professional circus clown at the moment.

Anyone else not like the more realistic graphics? I've been running through Sly 1-3 and I absolutely love the cell-shaded graphics of those ones. They really peaked at Sly 3, it's absolutely stunning on the PS3. But Sly 4....the artstyle is slightly bothersome for me.

PS3 version is £31 on Amazon UK. Regardless, I know of a site where I can get the U.S. version slightly cheaper than that sum, and that includes postage and packaging. Not worth waiting nearly two months for it to come out here where it's slightly pricier at all.

It's on Play.com, Game.co.uk and Zavvi.com for £40, maybe I should order it on Amazon UK before it potentially goes up in price. If you could tell us where it's available abroad for cheaper, it would be much appreciated.

Wow, that was pretty good.

Ugh, cartoon one looks much better, has much more style in it. Even the clothes, not only talking about the model, but the art of the character looks pretty bad.

Seriously man, Sony has some ip's that can be translated so good in tv Animation/cartoon series especially Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper.

Sony gutted their internal TV animation crew after Spectacular Spiderman got axed. A shame too since Sony made some cool shows. I've heard a lot of people got work at Hasbro Studios.

That was the best animated Spiderman show too. And they were obviously building up hype for shit to go down. ;_;

It's mostly the eyes. I mean shit, in the screenshot you posted she's totally crosseyed. Making the pupils smaller, giving them a tiny shine and making sure they're focused on something like a regular person would probably do heaps in making that model look better.

Find it weird Sony owns an animation studio but has never bothered adapting any of their original animated game IP's.

Wild ARMs, Parappa, Toro, PoPoLoCrois, Ape Escape, and Invizimals have received animated series. Most of those are Japanese, though Ape Escape had both a Japanese anime, and a US cartoon. Some of the anime were done by Sony, but Ape Escape US, and Invizimals were done by outside companies. Weird.

It's sad, but Sony probably doesn't want to deal with the inevitable, "It's a show about thieves!!" bullshit. I don't blame them either.

R&C is similar. It needs to be able to be risqué. It's not fit for most kids networks, but it's not quite Adult Swim, either.

Just watched it. I was going to buy this anyway but I wasn't really that excited until I watched that. Really looking forward to it.

Played the demo for 4 and i really dug the story bits plus i also like sly's voice actor since he gives off the cocky asshole vibe for the character

might have to get the hd collection.

That was really well done. I wasn't really hyped for the game before, but damn I'm really looking forward to it now!

Carmalitia has never looked good in a Sly game. There's something about her character design that looks fine in 2D, but never comes off well as a 3D model.

I can't remember her old look well enough to comment on that but I think the problem with this new model is that the pupils are too large (as someone stated before) and she has a weird chin where the 2D design has a neat point. Her mouth also seems a little small compared to the other characters as well.
