Well, the more grounded art (though still somewhat de-saturated) doesn't bother me. It's true, it's not as vibrant as Xenoblade, but maybe this shift needed to be made in order to accommodate the tone of the story and setting (both of which we know nothing about). Of course, it could at the same time stem from the fact that they're attempting to reach an even greater audience than XB(and there's nothing wrong with this), so long the art style is well executed, I see nothing to complain about.
X is not Xenoblade. It doesn't sport the premise where the locales are set upon the body parts of a dead titan Gods. As such, when you isolate Gaur Plains from that premise, I don't see what's inferior about the way the area we saw in X is designed compared to it. There were multiple times in the trailer where there was scenery in the distance that called to you.
The arching formation of land with the juxtaposed floating islands;
the natural bridge created between the two plateaus;
or the mountainous region in the far-off distance.
There's already the cliff overlooking the rest of the area where you could see the numerous waterfalls, those tower formations, river banks, rivers, beaches, and so forth- it's not even the slightest bit less picture-esque than what I've seen in Xenoblade. That's one (and there are a bunch more in the trailer) such location, and I doubt it'll be the last given how little we've seen of that particular area the game itself.
Okay. I'm sorry, but you have to divorce yourself from Xenoblade and try to appreciate X for what it is and what it will be. That whole bit reads as if X can't be as good as Xenoblade unless it becomes Xenoblade. I don't know if you've noticed it, but it's the purveying tone of your post and it's coloring your opinion in an unpleasant and irrational manner. X might very well end up being worse than Xenoblade in terms of exploration and whatnot, but from the area we've seen, it doesn't seem one bit inferior or off to a bad start.
Trust me when I say I know exactly what I sound like when I post on GAF I don't pretend to be anyone else but who I am.
I admire your passion in defending X by calling my opinion irrational. Your opinion is just as good as mines we don't have to agree as much as I love color I've also met plenty of people who prefer muted color just as passionately.
I already said X is not Xenoblade and I'll keep telling myself that until it sticks... It does not mean after playing Xenoblade I did not want to see a world as colorful and lush ever again in a video game without being cartoony. I kept waiting for what Monolith would deliver next because I felt a kinship thinking heh these guys love color. Psycho, I know right.
My desire for color has less to do with Xenoblade alone, my love for bright colors comes from my art, as a painter I focus on some extremely vivid palette for each painting.
I had to go to school for art and some assignments were in muted colors so yeah I can draw in gray tones but my heart is color, vibrant color. In school I learned how to use muted colors you learn to balance them or they won't work... That is the issue here aesthetically X's palette is not well balanced it is not pleasing. You can have a very awe inspiring muted brown and gray palette without looking so meh.
My so called unpleasant and irrational love for Xenoblade does come from the color which resonated with me. I am often depressed due life experiences. I hate the gray colors of the North East and wish I could live in the Sun of Miami. Color is something I really love.
What I don't like about X is it reminds me of the colors I see outside my window in my real life, while Xenoblade was this fantasy land of color that made me smile when I played it. Yeah I kinda like the irrational feels of getting away from the dull real life when playing games like this. Truth be told the main reason I am a Nintendo fan is the color palette.
I played Batman on my Wii U, a Dark game I'm okay with dull color matching story if need be. X is what it is but does not mean I did not expect Monolith to give me that same joy again with this game regardless of what palette they choose just balance it better so that it looks good.
It's not like I bitch about the color every time I load AC3 on my Wii U. Sorry but X is not there yet so I can't help but feel it is missing something so my first reaction is to point out from the pics you posted Xenoblade kicks its ass. You can post any other mainstream title next to those muted X pics and I may still find the other gray games having a better balance.
Still early yet... Just opinions guy.
