All I know is that his username was Gumby here, and he later caused a ruckus on a forum called Opa Ages, which is from my very short experience, a cesspool of bitter, mean-spirited nerds.

It's a little unsettling watching older seasons compared to new ones with how little Probst commentary there seems to be during challenges and at tribal council.
There's so little of Jeff in Season 1 you'd almost think Richard Hatch was hosting the show.

I want to say this changed sometime around Season 5 or 6. And he's only gotten more entrenched in the gameplay ever since.
Interesting. I have noticied how much more active Jeff is in the game, will be very intersting to see Season 1. I did watch the last few episodes with my family. I remember my whole family was rooting for Kelly. We all went to Pizza Hut that night and was talking about the finale with our server. Survivor was a lot more popular back then. according to Wkipedia, the final episode for season 1 got 51 million viewers. These days the finale gets 1/5 of that. Philippines got 11 million (according to wiki again). Thank god for that loyal fanbase. Survivor seems like it's going to be like SNL. One of those shows that will never go off the air. Although it will suck when/if Jeff is replaced.

For some reason this lineup of "favourites" isn't really making me want to watch.
I will, of course, but it seems like (half of) the cast is horrible, and not in an entertaining way. Religious nuts and "moms" aren't my thing, I guess. Cochran and Erik? No, thank you...

Edit:

At least Brenda will be pretty to look at and Phillip might bring some entertaining lunacy.

The only returning cast member I'm happy to see is Phillip, the federal agent. Everyone else, meh.

I can never not watch Survivor, even during the crappy seasons, like the Rob domination season.

I liked Survivor better when they were faced with nature and the elements more. Now they feed the contestants all the time. There's no survival to it. Sure, the players have more energy but it's not keeping with the original spirit of the show.

The show has definitely changed. The Survival aspect of the show used to be pushed a lot, but now CBS pushes the game/social aspects more. Survival is still a big aspect of the show though. It's partially why I love survivor to death, but can't bother watching Big Brother.

Malcolm is coming straight back like Russell, from Samoa to HvV (filming immediately afterward), and also like like Amanda and James came back a few months after China to their role in the original FvF.

My point is, based on the range of options, the contestants are pretty good. And I'm sure they're saving a few winners etc for Season 30.

There's a difference, though, in the fact that in previous seasons, they would film the spring season in November-ish, so by the time Fans vs. Favorites rolled around the first time, they already had an idea that James and Amanda were liked by the fans, and the hardcore fans would recognize them.

This time around, though, they literally filmed both these seasons back to back over the summer, so the fans have NO idea who Malcolm is. He can't be a favorite in this scenario because all the players will have 0 idea who he is because they've never seen him before.

I'm not against Malcolm being an All-Star, he's definitely worthy. But in terms of a Fans vs. Favorites? Him and Francesca can hardly be considered Favorites in that aspect.

Wait, COCHRAN is a Gaffer?

Yes. Gumby.. or was lol.

I am rooting for Brenda! Very interesting returning cast, and I'm really glad these are all players that have only played once before. I was tired of the same people that returned a million times before. I am lukewarm on Malcolm since the last few episodes of the previous season, but maybe I'll like him again now. Otherwise none of the returning players aside Brendan/Phillip annoy me so that's great.

Ugh Phillip & Brandon. I hope one is voted off first and the other quits after that TC. The other tribe worries me too. They look too young, they better not be a bunch of easy marks just waiting to be voted off. There better be some strategic ability on that side or this season could be terrible.

They were spoilers for 2 people that are in the Jury. That could happen to anyone really. I'll just have to watch and see.

tread carefully when reading survivor sucks.

Any season that has returning players is often spoiled heavily. The former Survivor crew is very cliquey and so word spreads quickly as to how people did. That's why Nicaragua and One World have been the least spoiled seasons in recent memory: all new players.

yessssss brendaGAF assemble!

Brenda!! She was the most beautiful person from her season. They've also got twice the crazy with both Brandon and Phil there.

Survivor you've gotten me hooked once again.

Well as I said, Russell Hantz was in that same situation between Samoa and HvV which were the first to be filmed back to back, and from what I understand, the other players were given a debriefing of his performance, so I'm sure all players this time around get a debriefing of Malcolm's.

I think what you're mainly saying, though, is that none of the fans will consider Matt their own "favorite", which is not necessarily the definition.

I think the debriefing was just a "this person got cast for a reason, take that however you want." Which is useless, because on the villains tribe you had joke villains like Coach who Russell could've easily been (and considering he was some really short bald guy running around in the woods being antisocial right away, thinking he was cast as a joke was completely forgivable), and now on the favorites tribe you've got people like Francesca. For all they know Malcolm got voted out fifth and just got put on again because he's funny and the tribe needed someone else strong in challenges.

Hmm, understandable. You'd think CBS/SEG would be on their ass about not leaking stuff though.

gonna be pulling for phillip or malcolm here. hoping brandon gets the boot early, or corrine. why is francesca back again? couldn't recall her until i saw the "francesqua" label lol, love phillip.

but seriously hope phillip gets a fair shake this season, he was unfairly railroaded in his season, the non rob tribe were just plain dicks, and rob played it perfectly making phil the target of everyone's ire.

Man, Corinne looks so old now...

Don't know if it's been posted here yet, but the premiere will be 2 hours. First time since.... HvV maybe? I forget. Hopefully they put the extra time to good use and it isn't just The Brandon Show feat. Phillip.

But you already know it will be. The real question is which woman on the cast will Brandon leer at and target for elimination first.

No Elisabeth Filarski? I pretend she died just before she got married, because since then she's entered Cloud Cuckooland. Not sure what happened, but the GOP sure did a number on her. In remembrance:

Y'know, I've actually never watched Season 1 of survivor. I was about 8 years old at the time and I didn't know about Survivor. My mom and brother got really into it so me and my dad joined in on season 2 and I've been hooked ever since.

I think I'll have to pick up the DVD soon. It's going to be interesting watching it, the players had never seen a season before to know how to play the game.

It's a little unsettling watching older seasons compared to new ones with how little Probst commentary there seems to be during challenges and at tribal council.

So I just started watching Season 1 and you're exactly right. I'm on episode 5 right now. Some things I've observed:

- A lot more focus on survival aspects compared to newer seasons
- Tribal has no roof. 3rd episode it rained really hard. I'm sure they smacked themselves on the had after that happened.
- No probst commentary during challenges. There's also very few microphones during the challenge, so you can't hear what the survivors are saying. It's a lot more boring actually.
- Challenges now usually have a puzzle section at the end which allows a tribe who's behind to catch up at the end. Most challenges so far are just 1 physical challenge, that's it.
- The conch shell they tried for 1 episode at tribal was silly, glad they decided to scrap it right away.
- The gong they also have to hit while entering tribal is weird.
- There is a big focus on the hike to tribal council, at least in the first few episodes. Now it's never shown.
- These people had never played the game, or watched it, so alliances started forming very late. Today we see people make alliances the first hour they hit camp. In season 1 it took Richard over a week to start forming alliances. Some players had no interest in doing so.
- Jeff is new to this as well, and seems less confident.
- It's interesting that they have a treasure chest at tribal with $1 million in it to remind them what they're playing for.
- I saw tribes sometimes saying "good game, no hard feels" while hugging after challenges. You would never see that today.
- Jeff doesn't say "3rd person voted out of Survivor Gabon, "x"". Instead he reads the last vote needed and says "That's enough, we don't need to read the resto of the votes".
- There's a lot less hostility between players. At least so far. I'm still pretty early into the season

The biggest difference is the lack of commentary and player audio during challenges. Similar to watching a sports game without commentary, it's a lot less exciting.

The hike for some seasons was actually a factor in the gameplay, most notably in Season 2, Survivor: The Australian Outback. The hike was so long, grueling, and complicated that alliances and voting plans were made on the way to tribal council.

Interesting. I have seen that season, but I would have been 9 when it aired so I've forgotten some of the details.

Sadly I won't have time to watch the premiere tonight cause I have a midterm to study for, but the sooner Brandon is eliminated, the better

LET'S GO CORINNE!

Hmm, Andrea is back on the show. She was in my graduating class, but I've never seen an episode of Survivor. I hear it's all the rage in our hometown, though. She lives in NYC now, I hear.

Allie's going to run this season. She's like the female Malcolm, a bartender and everything.

Glad to see Brenda and Corinne back.
